 | Algeria Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 31 | | As Algeria has not chosen to develop tourism, the hotel offer is narrow. In large cities, there is one or two top class hotels (5 stars) like Hotel Seybouse in Annaba They are used by visitors that are here for their job and are expensive. Other hotels are very basic and our friends did not advise us to go there. I have no opinion on my own. In previous travels, we very seldom slept in hotels as once in the desert, sky was our roof. On the few occasions we had to sleep in hotels, some were indeed VERY basic. However, on our last visit, we have seen several that looks fine from outside. Leave a Comment

If the Hotel Oasis Rouge is still open, it is one of the most colourfull hotels in the algerian desert. The hotel is like all the buildings in Timimoun made of red mud. We stayed in a hotel nearby. We drunk a glass of tea in the bar of the Hotel Oasis Rouge to see the colourfull interior and to feel the special atmosphere. The mud walls are nicely decorated and there is a faded elegance atmosphere. According to the metal plate hanging on the door of my room, the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg did sleep there at the beginning of the 20th century. No running water in the room, though. Even if it is a bit run out, the Hotel Oasis Rouge in Timimoun has a unique atmosphere. It is an old building built of wood and mud and the walls at the interior are nicely decorated. There are no modern facilities at all, but many personalities of last century did sleep here, as you can read on the faded plates hanging on some of the hotel rooms. I hope it's still open.... On June, 7th, 1943, a conference was held at the hotel with Winston Churchill and Eisenhower. The latter had dinner with king George V, a few days after the conference. At the end of war, the hotel was damaged by German bombings. After having been repaired and refurbished, the hotel re-opened in 1948. During the route through the dessert, mine was Djanet-Tamanrasset and surroundings there we stayed in a camping in the cities, but in the dessert there aren't any (at least I didn't see anyone), but there's any better place to stay and sleep than having the sky as your roof? If the climate lets you do vivac, if not you will have to have a tent. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Just a few steps away from Father Foucauld's hermitage, there is a compound with a rather simple hostel. The accommodation is very basic mountain stuff: an uncompromising stone-walled building, with two outside lavatories (quite far outside), three dormitories and a communal meeting room, with rugs and cushions, chairs, tables and an open fire. It is possible to get your meals there - and I must say, I really enjoyed the food! It was nothing fancy, but it just felt right! Leave a Comment Theme: HostelComparison: least expensive

The Dachzeltbus (= roof tent bus) is a very unique way of accomodation: on top of the roof of the truck there are 12 tents for two persons each - 6 tents on each side. You have to climb up a rather steep ladder before you get to the tents, but the great thing is, that you are independent of any kind of underground structure.... You always have your tent with a small mattrass in it for you. During the day, the tent is put together and covered, so that it does not fly away while driving. There is a 300 l water tank, two huge gas bottles for the kitchen, tables and benches - and the whole group is responsible for preparing the meals. An additional experience...!! Leave a Comment

In the desert no accomodation at all, unless you have your own tent. Some friends slept under the sky, but it was pretty cold at night. No facilities at all, again, but it was great to have a bathroom with ceiling and walls decorated with glittering stars. Speaking of washing, our water ration per day was about 1.5 litres per person; it can be very useful to have your own small fold up basin. In Illizi and Djanet some small hotels and camping are available. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

In Algeria there should not be any problems to find hotels. In the cities there are everything from luxury hotels to small cheap places to stay. In smaller places far out in the Sahara desert there is ofcourse limited accomodation. PHOTO: At the balcony of Hotel Si Moussa in El Oued. Leave a Comment
