Choice of a bivouac.: Choice of a bivouac.
On this trip, we had not to bother about the choice of a bivouac as we had Pierre, our French guide that decided where to spend the night. In other trips, when we were on our own, we had to choose the best spot. I will here, given our experiment, try to gather all the “do” and “don’t”.
Unique Quality: a- Never put your sleeping bag next to a rock, tuft, plant, bush or tree. This is where animals (insects, scorpions, snakes, mice, etc…) are the most likely to dwell.
b- Never have your bivouac in the bed of a (dry) oued. The hazard for a flash flood during the night is very low but, as moisture remains in the subsoil, this is where plants will grow and therefore animals live (see previous “don’t”). Animals can be snakes and scorpios.
c- Never look for a “shelter” in a hollow or a fold of ground. During the night, this is where the wind will blow sand.
d- Never settle on “living” (moving) sand. You will soon get sand into your sleeping bag, ears, mouth, eyes, nose and else!
e- No need to say that this is not in the middle of boulders that you should sleep!
f- Then, what is the best spot? A hard soil, almost flat, without any sand, with small or no gravel. Look at the photos of some of our various bivouacs.
