Hotel Avalarde: First Class in the 3rd world

Interesting city with some leftover influence from the Portuguese (still the main language), but in disrepair from 25 years of civil war. Relatively safe; apparently docile and pleasant locals.

First class, weatern style accomodation. Reasonably good restaurant, nice pool, sometimes lively bar scene.
