» More Benin Destinations | Benin Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 21 | | In the centre of Ganvie you can find also a hotel on wooden stilts. I didn't stay in the hotel, but had a short visit to the restaurant. There is also a souvenir-shop. From this place you have nice views at the island with the church, the place where the villagers fetch their water and the rather busy traffic of pirogues on the water. The rooms have bathrooms and flushtoilets. In Lake Nokoue about 8 KM from the launching point in Abomey-Calavi you can find ''Chez Rafael". You will see the auberge, built on stilts in the lagoon, just before you reach Ganvie village. You can miss it, because of the striking red colour of the building. It looks like a peaceful place in the middle of the lagoon. I didn't visit the place myself. After 3 nights Beaulieu de Balmas we moved to another place 1KM more east, to hotel "Cauris Coquillage''. This hotel is not at the beach side of the road, but has nice bungalows with electricity and showers. And we really enjoyed the swimmingpool and the outdoor restaurant with delicious food. The bungalows for 2 persons were 12.000 CFA. It was allowed to camp in the garden for 1000 CFA.
Nice and relaxed atmosphere. The pool and the restaurant were very popular. We liked it, that there were a lot of local visitors in the weekends. At the untarred coastal road from Ouidah to Cotonou are some campements, mostly at the landside of the road. Not far from Cotonou we found ''Beaulieu de Balmas'', at the oceanside of the road. It was possible to camp here and there were also 4 cabins, nicily situated just at the beachfront. I took the only cabin, which could be locked with a key, allthough I found out later, that the beach was also guarded at night. For a cabin they asked 10.000 CFA, too much in relation to the facilities. Finally I paid 3.000 CFA (6 dollar) a night.
The location at the beach was superb. We had a nice New Years Eve Party at the beach. The facilities were poor with only one toilet for 30 persons. There was no running water and electricty. In the cabin I could ask for a bucket of water everyday. At Beaullieu de Balmas was no restaurant, but it was possible to buy softdrinks and beer, when the staff was around. I stayed in Sheraton for a week during my stay in Benin. Sheraton is close to 2 KM from the city centre and about a KM from the Airport. The rooms and the services are excellent. There are rooms which faces the beach and a walk is a very nice experience.
The hotel has the best pool in town and also one of the best pubs in town, although a bit elite. Hotel Du Port is situated 1 KM from the city center. I stayed in this hotel for 2 weeks after I landed in the country. This hotel is near the Port of Cotonou and accessible from all parts of the city. The hotel boasts of a clean and large swimming pool. The Pizzeria in the hotel is excellent. Awale Plage is located in the small town of Grand Popo not far from the Togo border. Not much to do here except lay on the beach. In town there are some falling down colonial buildings, a Finnish-African museum (?!?), and a few places to eat. The rooms at Awale Plage consist of half a bungalow, some of the two floors. I actually preferred the one floor rooms; the upper floors could be stifling hot and hard to sleep in. They are clean, the restaurant has goos foor, and of course there is the beach!
They were building a pool when we were last there, also they have a bar built on the beach. Every couple of days, the local fisherman bring in their catch. It is fascinating to watch. Casa Del Papa is a beach resort in Ouidah. The resort faces the beach and to the back of the resort is the back waters. It has independent cottages, well decorated. There is a continental restaurant by the beach...and fish is the delicacy not to be missed. The beach although rough is very clean. There is a disco and a pub ..but this is not frequented even by the residents. The standard of hotels I stayed in in Benin was very good. I stayed in the better class hotels, as this is what I prefer, and all these had good facilities and were very clean with pleasant staff. They were classed as mostly 3 star – Hotel du Lac and Hotel du Port in Cotonou, Auberge du Grand Popo in Grand Popo, with one 2 star in Abomey which was Motel Abomey. They were all big, spacious rooms with large bathrooms and bath tubs in Hotel du Lac and Motel Abomey. Hotel du Lac, and Hotel du Port both had good sized swimming pools. The food in all of them was very good too. My favourites were Hotel du Lac in Cotonou for it's location overlooking the Lake and the lovely terrace restaurant, and Auberge in Grand Popo for it's quiet beachside location and it's laid back charm. See individual pages for more information on these hotels (when completed!) Theme: HotelComparison: more expensive than average

We were able to stay AT a nice home in the village of Akiza. This was the only concrete home, compared to all of the other homes that were adobe homes. This is a photo of the front of the home along with a few of its occupants. PRICELESS
This household had very many occupants, many kids, adults and various species of insects and other living things. We made an attempt to sleep in one of the rooms, but it was preoccuppied with several different species of insects prior to our arival therefore we chose to sleep out side under the stars. Upon placing our grass mats outside to sleep, someone brought us an air matterss. No words can describe that night of sleep out under the stars in the Bush Country of Benin West Africa.
