CHEZ CLARISSE (COTONOU): THE QUIETEST AND MOST SECURE IN AFRICA

by DAO

This is actually a well know restaurant with a swimming pool and 6 nice rooms behind it. It has no website and I had the wrong email address. I was lucky to get in, but am glad I did! This place is literally surrounded by the American Embassy and its guards. You have to pass through them to get to either side of this small lane. That means no loud music, traffic or trouble. I had the best stay here. My room was great, my air-conditioning and fan were awesome, my bathroom huge and I had the pool to myself. For the price it was paradise. I paid 27,000 CFA (41€, $54) for this oasis of serenity. I was fortunate enough to be able to check in early and go out and explore Cotonou. Using motorcycle taxis, everything is around 50 US cents away. You can walk to the port easily.

For the price, comfort, security and quiet - this is one of the best hotels in Africa.

They only have 6 rooms so I suggest you telephone and make the reservation.

They has a highly rated restaurant at the entrance to the complex. I am afraid I didn't eat here, but it looked very nice.

Hotel Baobab: Tanguieta Hotel

by bdagle

This hotel is very charming and beautiful. The staff is very friendly and helpful which is NOT true of many other locations. The food is good. Definitely recommend staying here.

The hotel is located on what I assume is the 'main' road of Tanguieta to the North. If you arrive by bus it is the same road that the AT&T bus stop is on. You can walk from the bus stop assuming you have managable luggage. From the bus stop, going north, the hotel is a short ways off the main road to the right. There is a sign.

The hotel is in the process of building a swimming pool. The inner court yard has mango trees and an amazing vine with pink flowers the petals of which carpet the ground. The open outer courtyard where the restaurant and bar is has an amazing view of the stars at night.

Novotel Orisha: Business Class 4 Star Hotel

by lalikes

Standard/upscale business hotel with pool. Rooms were nice, beds comfy, shower great with all the amenities. WiFi did work in our room late at night. I think it worked better when there weren't so many people online. Had trouble even in the lobby where it was a better signal. The lunch buffet was great, although expensive. I thought the hotel was a bit overpriced and out of the area. But my mind set is, it's West Africa so it must be less expensive and it's not. You couldn't walk anywhere. Although taxi's could be called, the price was elevated. Within a reasonable distance to Haie Vie which is a nice area with a lot of restaurants and bars.

Had a great stay there but have to say there were tiny biting ants in our room which I sprayed to death. A normal person would never have seen them but I'm *** about bugs so I scour the floor and walls for them. I never said anything to the staff as I thought... "well, I'm in Africa...whatever"... It was not a big deal. I feel like I'm throwing Orisha under the bus but for $200 U.S. a night, maybe it's a wake up call to spray some more.

By the way, we did not have food in the room.

Had champagne a couple of times (our anniversary) which the cheapest bottle was $102. Room service was on par. Hair dryer in room, A/C chilly, shampoo and did I mention a great shower. Hard to find in West Africa.

Heard that if you just go to the hotel you get a better rate.

Very Good Standard of Hotels

by janiebaxter

The standard of hotels I stayed in in Benin was very good. I stayed in the better class hotels, as this is what I prefer, and all these had good facilities and were very clean with pleasant staff. They were classed as mostly 3 star – Hotel du Lac and Hotel du Port in Cotonou, Auberge du Grand Popo in Grand Popo, with one 2 star in Abomey which was Motel Abomey.
They were all big, spacious rooms with large bathrooms and bath tubs in Hotel du Lac and Motel Abomey. Hotel du Lac, and Hotel du Port both had good sized swimming pools.
The food in all of them was very good too. My favourites were Hotel du Lac in Cotonou for it's location overlooking the Lake and the lovely terrace restaurant, and Auberge in Grand Popo for it's quiet beachside location and it's laid back charm.
See individual pages for more information on these hotels (when completed!)

Porto Novo - Hotel Beaurivage: Breakfast with the birds

by pfsmalo

Clean enough accomodation, although room was quite small for the price. Unfortunately Porto Novo is not renowned for the quality of its accomodation.

Best thing about this hotel is the breakfast on the terrace facing west. Get up early enough and you have the spectacle of the laguna with its lilies and hundreds of birds. But, get up early!! As in a few of the hotels in the region, there are also some caged crocodiles.

L'auberge de Grand Popo: Is this the paradise you're looking for?

by pfsmalo

This was one of the best experiences I had in Benin, hotel-wise, that is.

This hotel uses the old colonial "gendarmerie" with some rooms overlooking the ocean and the beach. Sitting on the terrace of the 1st. floor watching the sea and the sun going down was terrific, although the sunset was marred by low clouds to the west. Has a great restaurant too, with very good food. Cannot be classed as a "backpackers" place though. Doesn't come cheap, although what relaxation!!! Also has a small pool, as the ocean here can be very dangerous.

La Casa Del Papa, Ouidah : Relax by the Beach

by ajayzener

Casa Del Papa is a beach resort in Ouidah. The resort faces the beach and to the back of the resort is the back waters. It has independent cottages, well decorated. There is a continental restaurant by the beach...and fish is the delicacy not to be missed.

The beach although rough is very clean. There is a disco and a pub ..but this is not frequented even by the residents.

Hotel Du Port: Hotel Du Port

by ajayzener

Hotel Du Port is situated 1 KM from the city center. I stayed in this hotel for 2 weeks after I landed in the country. This hotel is near the Port of Cotonou and accessible from all parts of the city. The hotel boasts of a clean and large swimming pool. The Pizzeria in the hotel is excellent.
