Ngaoundéré - Hotel Mentong Palace: Doable option, if you need a decent place to sleep
by Bonobo2005
After a long, tough day of travelling from Mokolo to Ngaoundéré (9 hours on the road + several hours waiting time), arriving in the dark at a bus depot out of town, I was happy that the moto taxi driver drove me to a nearby hotel he knew.
The Mentong Palace is one in a cluster of a few fairly similar 2 stars hotels along a wide dirt road that connects Garoua Road, just 500 meters north of the train station, with the Commercial Centre near the big Cathedral. It’s the typical lower mid range option, with functioning standard facilities like electricity, a small TV with some local channels, fan – AC is not really needed - , hot water in a spacious bathroom, but otherwise offering a rather depressing environment. Gloomy, poorly painted, worn out furniture, mattresses and pillows. Not much's been done to make it look nice.
Otherwise, it could be better recommendable with its pleasantly shaded outdoor seating areas at the premises. In fact, the complex is huge, and you could suspect from the outside that the owners may have had plans to build the best and largest hotel in town, but it seems to be on hold for long now, while only the small old wing is utilized. By the way, there’s a slightly cheaper and more basic annex across the street.
There’s an OK and very reasonably priced restaurant, with a choice of (the) two standard dishes: rice, spaghetti or potato chips with “Capitaine’ fish or chicken for around cfa 3500.
Reception appeared to be friendly and helpful, permitting me to check out 4 hours late for an extra cfa 2000 (EUR 3), very handy since I took the night train and could store my luggage safely and take a shower just before getting on the train, seriously needed after exploring Ngaoundéré coping with close to 40 degrees Celsius during daytime. By the way, later it appeared that I was the only fresh smelling person on the train so in hindsight I think I might have preferred to smell myself rather than everybody else!
Location wise it has pros and cons as well. Although it’s only 10 minutes to the Grand Marche or 5 minutes to the train station area (by moto taxi, 200cfa), in the evening it’s quite isolated, although there are a couple of nightclubs further along the unlit and potholed road. These look a bit sleazy though and you may need some strong motivation as a tourist to visit them.
Let’s say it’s doable and decent option if you won't stay long (2,5/5).
Price cfa 12000 (EUR 18) per night.
