WWF bungalows in Camp Kombo: Bungalows

by Wafro

This bungalow you will find deep in the Southeastern corner of Cameroon in the town called Mambélé. There probably are several other places around Cameroon where you’ll find these wooden constructions. Most of the time they are very basis, with facilities for 2 persons. Toilet, beds, douche and don’t forget the balcony to enjoy the scenery or a sundown.

Campement de Flamboyant: Where everybody seems to stay in Mokolo

by Bonobo2005

Just a short moto ride from the Grand Marche, the Campement de Flamboyant is the main and probably only (once?) mid range accommodation option in Mokolo. The whole complex, with Boukarous on green and spacious grounds, look awesome from the outside, the rooms themselves however appeared to be disappointing.

Run down, as if it opened 10 years ago and nothing was ever replaced or repaired, not even the basics like the fan and the mosquito net. You wonder why they would leave the ruined and broken down elements in the room instead of just removing them.

Now, that could be acceptable considering the fact that the price has halved over the years; but the layers of dirt and dust on the floor are a paradise for various types of insects and reptiles but that’s not an environment in which African people normally receive their guests, even if they are tourists. And you might want to consider to bring your own set of sheets because the sheets provided were not free of stains and moreover too small to cover the filthy mattress. Or better pitch your own tent inside.

Maybe the problem was that - as far as I could see -, there were no women working. It was harvesting time and all the women may have been sent to the fields. And the Campement may badly suffer from the drop in (overland-) tourist arrivals for several years now due to the security problems in Nigeria and Chad.

To conclude with a few positive points: restaurant has nice terrace, food is OK, staff friendly enough and the garden is beautiful. Price CFA 12000/7000 (ca.EUR 11) with/without AC. AC not really needed.
As so often with lower midrange accommodation in Cameroon: only recommended for one night during transit.

note: In this and in all my reviews, my satisfaction rate partially depends on value for money. During my past travels in Africa, I have been using mostly budget options which often were extremely simple, but more rewarding and clean than many of the so called mid-range option, tourist class, two star whatever they advertise it like the Campement de Flamboyant

Ngaoundéré - Hotel Mentong Palace: Doable option, if you need a decent place to sleep

by Bonobo2005

After a long, tough day of travelling from Mokolo to Ngaoundéré (9 hours on the road + several hours waiting time), arriving in the dark at a bus depot out of town, I was happy that the moto taxi driver drove me to a nearby hotel he knew.

The Mentong Palace is one in a cluster of a few fairly similar 2 stars hotels along a wide dirt road that connects Garoua Road, just 500 meters north of the train station, with the Commercial Centre near the big Cathedral. It’s the typical lower mid range option, with functioning standard facilities like electricity, a small TV with some local channels, fan – AC is not really needed - , hot water in a spacious bathroom, but otherwise offering a rather depressing environment. Gloomy, poorly painted, worn out furniture, mattresses and pillows. Not much's been done to make it look nice.

Otherwise, it could be better recommendable with its pleasantly shaded outdoor seating areas at the premises. In fact, the complex is huge, and you could suspect from the outside that the owners may have had plans to build the best and largest hotel in town, but it seems to be on hold for long now, while only the small old wing is utilized. By the way, there’s a slightly cheaper and more basic annex across the street.

There’s an OK and very reasonably priced restaurant, with a choice of (the) two standard dishes: rice, spaghetti or potato chips with “Capitaine’ fish or chicken for around cfa 3500.

Reception appeared to be friendly and helpful, permitting me to check out 4 hours late for an extra cfa 2000 (EUR 3), very handy since I took the night train and could store my luggage safely and take a shower just before getting on the train, seriously needed after exploring Ngaoundéré coping with close to 40 degrees Celsius during daytime. By the way, later it appeared that I was the only fresh smelling person on the train so in hindsight I think I might have preferred to smell myself rather than everybody else!

Location wise it has pros and cons as well. Although it’s only 10 minutes to the Grand Marche or 5 minutes to the train station area (by moto taxi, 200cfa), in the evening it’s quite isolated, although there are a couple of nightclubs further along the unlit and potholed road. These look a bit sleazy though and you may need some strong motivation as a tourist to visit them.

Let’s say it’s doable and decent option if you won't stay long (2,5/5).

Price cfa 12000 (EUR 18) per night.

Capitol Residence: Good hotel in Buea (for Mt. Cameroon)

by Bonobo2005

I stayed here before and after my trek on Mount Cameroon, recommended by the Buea Ecotourism Office.

Staff of the Capitol Residence was heartwarmingly friendly and polite.
The rooms, starting at CFA 17k (EUR 26) per night, are decent value. They still look newish (rare in Cameroon!) and clean and have good working AC, satellite TV, and a balcony. Bathrooms have hot water.
Although I shouldn’t suggest this, the rooms offer excellent possibilities to wash your clothes, and quickly dry them with the AC (dry blower option) in case of humid weather outside. Very useful after trekking Mount Cameroon!! That said, surprisingly for such a wet region, running water was not always available during my 2 stays of 1 night each. They explained to have some problem with their supplier, which I guess should be temporary. By the way, I received a small discount on request.

Useful is a computer for guests with free internet near the reception.

The restaurant is in a wing behind the main bar with a noisy TV, as usual mostly entertaining the bored staff. Food is good and service excellent, as you would hope for while spending EUR 10 or so on meals that could be obtained from the stalls and bars just outside the premises for a tenth of the price. Most tourists like me come to Buea to trek to the Mountain summit, and so I was happy to pay more for (I trust) better standards of food preparation.

The location is good as well, near a (night-) market, several local drinking places and simple stores. Moreover its proximity to a main roundabout ensures good transport options.
It’s definitely not the most atmospheric place I ever stayed, but it currently has the best hotel facilities in town, and is perfect for a night or 1-2.

Camping in Cameroon

by Wafro

There are so many places to put your tent. When you camp in the wild always ask the local chief his permission and pay a 1000cfa.
There are also hotels with a backyard where you can place your tent, never pay more than 3000cfa.
