Miscellaneous Tips, Ilha do Sal, Cape Verde - Reviews and Hotel Information

Hotel Novorizonte is part of the Barcelo Resorts chain which houses guests in bungalow style lodgings. The rooms are o.k. with a decent shower/bath (water pressure is distressed during peak washing periods) and comfortable beds. Its just enough for two though I saw some families of 4 try to squeeze themselves into them. The closet can be converted into a bunk bed style room for two young and small children. The Hotel offers an all-inclusive meal and drink plan but is not mandatory. The meals are presented buffet style and is your typical hotel holiday grub. You can choose to pay only for breakfast and eat out the rest of the time. The all-inclusive bar serves awful drinks in plastic cups. Convenient but not recommeded. The liquor is pretty suspect. Instead try the french managed Restaurant Atlantis. The bar serves premium liquor and is nice. The food is prepared well (the tuna carpaccio is heavenly). Best of all is the wine list. From Bordeaux to Rioja. You gotta love those french. Also Americo's in town serves good sized meals. Everything can be paid for in Euros so no need to change money. In the hotel there is a nice salt water pool when you want a change from the beach and various recreational activities to occupy those nice and warm lazy days. The beach aerobics, volleyball and football start around 10:30 every morning. They are really fun and the activities staff are a nice bunch of folks. Kiki the aerobics guy had everyone laughing and in good spirits all day. There is also a dive center adjacent to the hotel that is good. The dive sites around the island are pretty. It's not the Red Sea, Malta or the Pacific but it's decent. For the adventurous and experienced the cave diving site in Buracana (north of island) is a must. If you do it you'll know why. This hotel is well situated by the beach and is within walking distance to the small town. The clean, turqoise sea is a dream.

The grounds are well kept, though there aren't many trees. There is Kite boarding, windsurfing and surfing facilities nearby. Again, the activities crew are outstanding especially Kiki, Cape Verde's version of the Energizer Bunny Rabbit. He keeps going and going and going........Two last things. Whatever you do, don't drink the water from the tap. Don't even brush your teeth with it. You'll be spending your holidays on the porcelain throne if you do. And finally have fun, expect things to be slow, no stress. Your on an sunny island in the middle of nowhere.
