Hostellerie De La Licorne: STAY HERE!

The La Licorne is a diamond in the rough; the only place I will ever stay in Abidjan! Stay here and feel as though you have been transported back in time (1960s France) and to a different dimension.

Run by a older French couple, the La Licorne has the most personality of any hotel I have ever stayed at. Fortunately, that personality does not come at the expense of cleanliness or good service -- both of which are qualities of this fine hotel!

With less than a dozen rooms, five near the pool and six inside, the La Licorne is quaint. Breakfast is provided each morning, consisting of some french bread, fruit and coffee. Omlets can be made to order, but cost extra. As for the rooms, they are very clean, always have hot water and have free wireless internet (which works!). I found my room to be very spacious, but I do know that two of the rooms immediately next to the hotel's pool are rumoured to be quite small. Avoid these, if possible.

As for the service, I also found it to be quite good. We were always greeted with a smile, even when stumbling into the hotel at 3 AM. Staff were professional and seemed very attentive to our needs.

Lastly, the location, while good for me (very close to our office), is about a 15 minute drive from Abidjan's downtown. II Plateaux is home to many businesses and international NGOs, but this location is not convenient for everyone, especially if you are working in Plateaux (downtown). Though I would find the commute worth it, many might not. Something to keep in mind when making your decision. II Plateaux is home to many of Abidjan's best restaurants, including a number of Vietnamese and Lebanese restaurants, making it attractive to go outside for dinner, as opposed to taking advantage of the La Licorne's french (and somewhat overpriced) restaurant.

Unique Quality: Where to start? Stuffed leopards in some of the rooms. Unique 1950s French décor. A psychedelic restaurant. Need I say more?

Abidjans Finest

I stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel which boasted A Bowling alley and a ice rink and also a conference centre where i was working it also had a great Pool which streched halfway round the building

Coppa-Cabana: Coppa-Cabana, campground with a bar-restaurant

At the Coppa-Cabana camp is a nice bar-restaurant serving softdrinks, beers and meals.

We had to stay a few days in Abidjan to arrange or visa, so we enjoyed some nice lunches and dinners with the two French brothers, Jean and Jeannot.

Coppa-Cabana: Abidjan, tent with oceanview

Coppa-Cabana is a very small and cosy campground at the ocean. The campsite has a nice bar serving drinks and meals.

By steep steps you have a direct access to the beach. The beach is rather dirty, because it is used for dropping rubbish and as public toilet.

Coppa-Cabana: Abidjan, campground at the ocean

Coppa-Cabana is a small and peaceful campground at the ocean road, east of Abidjan.

It's a relaxed place run by two French brothers, Jean and Jeannot. There are showers and washing facilities. For us they were the first facilities after 7 days brousse camping.

Le Meridien Presidente: An Oasis

I spent 2 weeks at the Meridien this year and was overall quite pleased. The hotel is located waterfront within a semi-residential neighborhood, and is a gated and guarded complex.

The room was spacious and comfortable and reasonably clean. It had a large king size bed, desk for working, dresser and fairly large bathroom with a tub/shower combo.

I shared the room with a few small critters but would not consider this uncommon in humidity. The room smelled musty due to the air conditioner's attempts to keep up with the outside temps & most hotels in Africa share this. The bed and bedding were comfortable, the bathroom clean, and furnishings adequate although dated in appearance. The TV was modern with about 12 stations one of which was trusty CNN and about 6 other English channels including BBC.

The front desk staff were slow in response to many requests and somewhat indifferent to attempts to get their attention. Checking out was quite painful, and I would recommend clearing off minor charges as you go if you are there for any length of time.

The remainder of the staff, however, were very friendly and gracious in all their dealings. Take some time to chat with them as they are nice people and love to talk.

The pool area is definitely the main attraction. It features a very large pool area overlooking the ocean complete with a small water-fall in the middle. Other amenities outdoors include a restaurant and bar, tennis courts, lawn bowling and ping-pong.

As mentioned the hotel is within a gated compound and was perfect for running/walking. The grounds are large enough that you can simply run circuits within and get a good workout (run early or late as the sun is HOT).

The room service food was excellent and very inexpensive. I suffered no major intestinal ill-effects common at times in Africa and the flavour was all in all very good. The local beer, Flag, was quite good as well.

There are markets and a few restaurants in the area which are definitely worth a visit to appreciate the culture.

Sofitel: International price, sub-par standards

One of the best hotels in the city (I'm told), and certainly one of the most expensive. Good view of the lagoon. Located on a pretty quiet street. Quality of the service though is a bit unreliable, and staff are not that helpful.
