The Grand Hotel where this Vter stayed was only one of a very few the embassy would even let me stay in at the time. It was nice enough and was very expensive with good service and friendly staff. Keep in mind this is 5 stars by West African standards and they are trying.
My friends tell me that the Belgium owned and run Hotel Memling which is the other hotel might be nicer now but any way not to much of a selection for sure. The owners are a Indian family present in Congo for years.
I stayed there two or three times for a couple of days, and i was always satisfied
I ll say its a 2 stars (european new norms) hotel
A breakfast with bread eggs and tea for less than 5 USD ; i ll already booked rooms for belgian friends whose were satisfied too

so go to Memling or Intercontinental

this is an oasis in the crazy prices of hotels in Kinshasa
If you come to Kinshasa as a backpacker and you dont want to pay silly prices for the hotels in centre ville, jumb into a taxi (2000fr) to round point Victoire and go to hotel La Creche. Rooms with bathroom cost 7500fr. It is of high standard but it is a heven in the inferno of expencive accommodation that defines Kinshasa. When you feel more comfortable with the city you can take the taxi simle (500fr)or the micro bus (250fr) to go downtown to the embassies and the rest. The full address is A3, av. You are not exactly spoilt for choice when it comes to staying in Kinshasa. Grand Hotel being one of 2 hotels where you can stay safely. I stayed a month in the hotel and found it comfortable. The beds and pillows were excellent and as the air con was fully under your control a good nights sleep was easily had. Look for a room in the new tower as rooms in older part of the hotel are not very nice in comparison. The fridge was working but had to haggle for a key as it was bizzarely locked. Also had to demand a TV remote for which a $100 deposit was taken. Room service was prompt. Would recommend the hot canapes as it is quite plentiful for a cheap price. The beer in the room bar was also not exorbitantly priced. No tea or coffee facilities in the room. The hot water was hit and miss and not available 24 hr which was a big disappointment. Staff pleasant and cleaners not averse to asking for money or relating sob stories to extract cash. The hotel disco and lobby area was patrolled usually by a few prostitutes but the security men usually kept most of them at bay (some slip through). Other residents have had nocturnal knocks on the door from girls but it is a rare event. Having said that the clubs and bars in Kinshasa are full of prostitutes and very good looking ones too so beware. For a relaxing afternoon snack the lady who makes crepes in the atrium (Whopi Glodberg dopple ganger) is recommended. All in all a quality hotel that whilst it does not fit the 5 star rating is very close to it.
