SHANGWE HOTEL BELAKOM: GOOD IN GOMA
This is a reasonable hotel in Goma. It is not cheap by local standards, but it does the job. Almost every room is $40. That’s per room, not per person. This being Africa, you could probably haggle the price down if you speak to them (in French). It is relatively clean, well organised, safe and I had no problems getting to sleep. It is on the outskirts of Goma, but that is one of the reasons it is safe and quiet. It is located in a nice residential neighbourhood and you have views over (very) nearby Lake Kivu from the upper floor.
The hotel is run by several polite men and they are on duty 24 hours a day. In addition the nice garden area out front has a very high fence. Inside you have a fairly open fronted dinning room and a full service bar. The menu is not vast and it’s not cheap, but your don’t have to take a platoon of Army troops with you into town at night. I enjoyed my fresh spaghetti and my cold beer. They do make it up from scratch so it does take a while. The bar is essentially open 24 hours a day. You keep buying and they keep serving. The bartender sleeps behind the bar and I accidentally woke him up once. He did ask if I wanted anything to drink.
My room was small and there wasn’t a lot of room once you accounted for the large bed. It was a reasonable mattress and I slept quietly and soundly. The room did have a closet, TV, table and mosquito net. I don’t remember the room having air-conditioning, but it did have a fan and it was cool.
The bathroom was ok. I had a big tub, shower attachment, modern flush toilet and a reasonable mirror. Worryingly I had a hair brush. I did not take advantage of its use. The water was hot although the water pressure was a little weak.
The remote control TV had some French TV channels including 24 hours news.
Breakfast (included) was a mini - feast. Toast, bread, jams, fruit and even a fried tomato with tea and coffee. They even asked if I wanted more.
If you do want to sit and sip beers on the lake – there is another hotel almost opposite. Best to ask the price of the beers there first. I didn’t and they charged me a lot.
All in all this is a very reasonable mid-price option in Goma. Budget options may involve some very real safety issues.
Welcome to Goma, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

hotel La Creche: Kinshasa cheap accommodation
this is an oasis in the crazy prices of hotels in Kinshasa
If you come to Kinshasa as a backpacker and you dont want to pay silly prices for the hotels in centre ville, jumb into a taxi (2000fr) to round point Victoire and go to hotel La Creche. Rooms with bathroom cost 7500fr. It is of high standard but it is a heven in the inferno of expencive accommodation that defines Kinshasa. When you feel more comfortable with the city you can take the taxi simle (500fr)or the micro bus (250fr) to go downtown to the embassies and the rest. The full address is A3, av. Badjoko and the managers number is 0997550605

Grand Hotel: Not so Grand Hotel -but good
The Grand Hotel where this Vter stayed was only one of a very few the embassy would even let me stay in at the time. It was nice enough and was very expensive with good service and friendly staff. Keep in mind this is 5 stars by West African standards and they are trying.
My friends tell me that the Belgium owned and run Hotel Memling which is the other hotel might be nicer now but any way not to much of a selection for sure.

GRAND HOTEL KINSHASA
You are not exactly spoilt for choice when it comes to staying in Kinshasa. Grand Hotel being one of 2 hotels where you can stay safely. I stayed a month in the hotel and found it comfortable. The beds and pillows were excellent and as the air con was fully under your control a good nights sleep was easily had. Look for a room in the new tower as rooms in older part of the hotel are not very nice in comparison. The fridge was working but had to haggle for a key as it was bizzarely locked. Also had to demand a TV remote for which a $100 deposit was taken. Room service was prompt. Would recommend the hot canapes as it is quite plentiful for a cheap price. The beer in the room bar was also not exorbitantly priced. No tea or coffee facilities in the room. The hot water was hit and miss and not available 24 hr which was a big disappointment. Staff pleasant and cleaners not averse to asking for money or relating sob stories to extract cash. The hotel disco and lobby area was patrolled usually by a few prostitutes but the security men usually kept most of them at bay (some slip through). Other residents have had nocturnal knocks on the door from girls but it is a rare event. Having said that the clubs and bars in Kinshasa are full of prostitutes and very good looking ones too so beware. For a relaxing afternoon snack the lady who makes crepes in the atrium (Whopi Glodberg dopple ganger) is recommended. All in all a quality hotel that whilst it does not fit the 5 star rating is very close to it.

when I arrive at kinshasa...
when I arrived at kinshasa airport,I talked a little with a french boy working in chicago, and who came to zaire for a campaign of vaccination;I asked him to give me some advice about a hotel.
he told me:it depends,do you want to be alive tomorrow morning?
I answered:yes,if possible.
so go to Memling or Intercontinental
150$ if you negociate a little at the reception
memling is ****; and intercontinental is not a hotel,it is a city with swimming-pool,restaurants,shops,travel agencies etc...
