Grand Hotel Kinshasa
100 à 200$ US Hôtel à prix élevé, beaucoup de boutiques dans le hall de l'hôtel, piscine, plusieurs restaurants, chambres climatisées
Rooms and bathrooms have seen better days (1970's). There's wifi internet access!! Alas not fast. Nice view of the Congo River. It's one of the better hotels in Kinshasa, albeit overpriced. The entire complex is being renovated and modernised, so the swimming pool area was closed. Very peaceful area of Kinshasa.
Unique Quality: Its claim to fame is that this is where the protagonists of the "Rumble in the Jungle" stayed. George Foreman and Muhammed Ali once walked around the lobby of the Grand Hotel in preparation for the greatest boxing match in history.
The location of the hotel is quite pleasant. Close to the Congo River and within the leafy embassy district of Gombe, you would be able to see the mighty body of water from the higher floors of the building. Undergoing much-needed renovation, the Grand, which used to be the Intercontinental Hotel during Mobuto's era, is trying to reclaim its glory days, now that new 5-star hotels are finally being constructed around Kinshasa.

You are not exactly spoilt for choice when it comes to staying in Kinshasa. Grand Hotel being one of 2 hotels where you can stay safely. I stayed a month in the hotel and found it comfortable. The beds and pillows were excellent and as the air con was fully under your control a good nights sleep was easily had. Look for a room in the new tower as rooms in older part of the hotel are not very nice in comparison. The fridge was working but had to haggle for a key as it was bizzarely locked. Also had to demand a TV remote for which a $100 deposit was taken. Room service was prompt. Would recommend the hot canapes as it is quite plentiful for a cheap price. The beer in the room bar was also not exorbitantly priced. No tea or coffee facilities in the room. The hot water was hit and miss and not available 24 hr which was a big disappointment. Staff pleasant and cleaners not averse to asking for money or relating sob stories to extract cash. The hotel disco and lobby area was patrolled usually by a few prostitutes but the security men usually kept most of them at bay (some slip through). Other residents have had nocturnal knocks on the door from girls but it is a rare event. Having said that the clubs and bars in Kinshasa are full of prostitutes and very good looking ones too so beware. For a relaxing afternoon snack the lady who makes crepes in the atrium (Whopi Glodberg dopple ganger) is recommended. All in all a quality hotel that whilst it does not fit the 5 star rating is very close to it.
does anyone know about a safe yet affordable and centrally located hotel in Kinshasa? The hotels I find seem to start at around 200 $, or they are too far away (I knowe, the UN people are spoiling the prices). Travelling on business. so I need to know chances to find my laptop in the room when I return must be in my favor. Any advice/recommendation?
Frankly I know only of the Grand Hotel Kinshasa, which was fine, and likely the best hotel in town. The prices are now around $200.00. Cannot recommend others as I have not stayed anywhere else in the city. I would however choose to back to the best hotel in town if I was going there again.
Hope the business is an important one. Things can get hairy around there at times. Mind you, it has been a while since I was there, and it was hard to visit the gorillas and find only guirillas instead. Good luck!
