the place to be in kinshasa

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on April 9, 2010

You do not compaire hotes around the world as you cant compaire countries. for congolese, memling is a 5star hotel, in the DRC. in South Africa a 5 star hotel is not recognise as 5 star in France! before traveling out there, learn about the country, and local people. Dont expect your home dish to be cooked every were in the world. even MCDs dont get it rwight. If you are in Congo, u consume congolese, if you are in France, you consume French, if you are in South Africa, you consume South african. That why the world is interesting

Unique Quality: In average, you are doing well, keep it up.

Number one hotel in Kinshasa

Memling is one of the two international class hotels in Kinshasa. You have everything like in Europe. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to book a room as it is always full.
The best of the hotel is its central position, in the middle of Gombé and Boulevard du 30 juin, with easy access to all restaurants, bars and of course, ministries and premises of major companies.

Unique Quality: This is not a plac for entertainment or vacation. If you are in Kinshasa, you are there on business, so this place is perfect for what you have to do.
The only problem is the business center in the lobby with old machines and slow connection. Try to print a document from your laptop or USB key.
They accept credit cards.
If you make a reservation, make sure you have paid several nights in advance else they give the romm to someone who is there with the cash before you.

Directions: Gombé center. You see it from 30 juin, not far from RAWBANK and Ministry of Mines

As of july 2006 Single US$156/night Double with two sharing US$176/night this includes all taxes and tourism levies.

First off "Le Pub", the bar downstairs charges US$7 for a Tembo (big beer) which sells for less than a dollar on the street. They charge US$3 for a pack of local smokes also less than a dollar on the streets. Breakfast is US$25 for full and US$15 for continental. For US$6 you can get a cup of coffee, a croissant, a breadroll with Jam and butter.

Internet access in the business centre is US$0.25/minute and speed is acceptable, no in room internet facility. Cheapest meal I found was pasta at US$13 make sure you ask for al dente coz the stuff I had was probably al dente some weeks prior to arriving at my table.

Certain times of day no hot water.

Rooms were ok in the old wing and pretty decent in the new towers. Aircon worked but not dramatically cold, TV reception was fuzzy and had a choice of a number of Western and Arabic channels, we had CNN, not BBC news.

The pool looked great.

No kettle/tea/coffee in room facility. No minibar.

Check-out was a breeze with no incorrect charges. The hotel is away from the centre of town but not an inconvenient distance (+-5 minutes drive)

Great view of the Congo river and general views of Kinshasa.

currently most expensive

At US$207 per night this is the most expensive, the Grand was charging US$156. When you book make sure that the total price includes all taxes (30%) and tourist charges so you don't get a fright on checkout.

They have wireless internet access in the rooms, which the Grand doesn't. The food price is as extortionate as the Grand. US$25 for full breakfast.

Prostitutes are not kept out of the hotel by security so if you plan to have a quiet drink around the pool at night it will be pretty quiet but do expect the odd approach from one or two.

Staff are friendly and helpful and all the ones I spoke to could communicate in English.

The coffee in this hotel is great, strong and well filtered unlike at the Grand where it's on the weaker side. On this subject no in room kettle/tea/coffee facility - room service is US$4/cup

As with all DRC trade, expect them to reject any torn US Dollars, even a slight nick on the edge of the note will "invalidate" it no matter whether it's US$1 or US$100.

There's a great Shwarma restaurant called Sindbad directly opposite the hotel entrance and with Shwarma's at 800CF (+-US$2) you can't go wrong.

The rooms are clean and new. TV reception is clear with various Arabic and Western satellite channels.

Room service in my experience was within 5 minutes for a simple coffee order. Hotel meal service around the pool was quick (about a fifteen minute wait for two half chickens and an order of prawns)

Location wise, it's right in town and so depending on political climate maybe a little less removed (and therefore less safe) than the Grand, although the security they hire to protect their guests is more than ample.

There's a great Indian restaurant just down the road called Ashiana. Staff at reception will tell you how to get there.

Airport shuttle offered at US$50 one way
