The Basma Hotel is located about 10 minutes drive from the train station, on top of a hill, offering fabulous view over the city and the Nile. It is a 4 star hotel, which had all the mod cons. Our room was a little tired looking, but more than adequate. There is a large pool, restaurant and bar. It was well located to explore the town.

We stayed here for only one night, and the highlight of our stay was definitely the view from parts of the hotel (not from our room unfortunately) which looked over the Nile and the distant desert.

The Old Cataract Hotel

Unfortunately we didn't stay at the Old Cataract Hotel, but I wanted to mention it here as it is an Aswan institution. It sit on a cliff looking over the Nile, and has been in operation since 1899. Although always the toast of Aswan, it was made even more famous by its inclusion in the 1978 Agatha Christie movie "Death on the Nile".

The main draw card for me would have to be its fabulous location. Would love to have a drink in the bar and watch the sunset.

Old Cataract Hotel from the
Nile

This was a beautiful hotel in Aswan, that was made famous by the Agatha Christie book, Death on the Nile. Although we only saw this from our felluca, you could definitely tell this was one of the higher end hotels in Aswan.

Wonderful view of the Nile... great outside patio area...

View from my room

Queens Hotel is a nice hotel near the train station. I got a room on the 4th floor with a small balcony and Nile View. There was a bathroom, two beds, a fan in the roof. There was also an air-condition, but I’m not sure it worked as it looked old and I never use air-condition. And this was the only room in Egypt I stayed in with a TV. I like it as I can listen to music and watch the news (for the pictures). Breakfast is included in the price. I paid 40 pounds a night.

Old Cataract Hotel

The Old Cataract Hotel is one of Egypt’s most famous hotels. Built on the rocks of the first Nile cataract this is the place where the famous writer Agatha Christie wrote “Dead on the Nile”. She used to stay on the balcony over the entrance and drink something while admiring the sunset. On the terrace covered today, she used to write her novel. This was also the hotel where Winston Churchill stayed during his trip to Aswan for inaugurating the Old Dam built by British.

THE view from my room (Oberoi
hotel)

Forget the dingy room, the dusty carpet, the noisy air-conditioning unit, the loud belly-dancing music from the nightclub upstairs, and the scary lift. With its large rooms and clean bathroom (although the drains could use some clearing), and best of all - grand view of the Nile - all these at less than USD 10/night, the Horus Hotel is not a bad option at all. I didn't make any advance reservations as it's slack season. First was quoted EGP 50, but managed to bring it down to EGP 40. The rate includes breakfast - and you could ask them to pack one for you in case you're visiting Abu Simbel. Staff are helpful and friendly.

One of the best views of the Nile if budget constraints preclude you from staying at Oberoi or Old Cataract Hotel.

Our Room

We had a cruise boat for 3 nights of our trip, travelling from Aswan to Luxor...the MS Rosetta... It was a really nice boat (although a little old in the decor area) and it was a highlight of our trip.

The rooms were very comfortable, clean and everyone had a window. They have a pool on the top deck, a bar & restaurant etc.

Marbaba Hotel

We stayed at the Marbaba Hotel in Aswan for a night when we first arrived. It wasn't anything special but it was clean enough and comfortable. The shower was good too so we couldn't complain. ;) We also got a complimentary hibiscus tea when we arrived...

Afternoon

During any of our world travels, I don't think we have received so much for so little a price. The Ramses Hotel room we had provided an splendid view of the river, as seen in my title page for Aswan, as well as here, and had the amenities of air-con, color TV, mini-refrigerator, comfortable queen sized bed and clean private bath--all for the equivalent of $15- American dollars. The Ramses Hotel is situated in the center town, with reasonable access to the Corniche, but also to the route leading across the tracks to both the train station and shuttle van station. This high rise hotel has many rooms, but apparently tour groups book their frequently. We stayed elsewhere on the first night. But, because there are so many perfectly adequate hotels in Aswan, there really is no need to book in advance even during high season. This is after all only a two star hotel, but it's a great one if one can get a room overlooking the river.

This place is by far one of the busiest in the budget categories but for good reason. You may have to call ahead during peak season but the wonderful staff and great breakfasts make this one a gem of a place. The staff is very professional and breakfast includeds pancakes and fresh juice. All rooms are clean and have private bathrooms and the owner had some grand plans for extentions which means the owner will probably elevate the price.
