1 hr from Sharm-el-Sheik. Traditionally for backpackers but has started catering for more upmarket-e.g.Hilton hotel. Check out the Bedouin Moon hotel and Reef 2000 diving centre-great people there! Go to Coloured Canyon and St. Catherines. Cheap meals at Sharks-5le. Diving-Gabr-el-Bint, Ras Abu Galum, The Canyon, Bells.
Going in September. we want to snorkel, dive, relax and visit the desert. Would like a nice hotel.

I visited all of this three places - and my favourite one, to which I return as often as possibel, is Dahab-Assalah (and also Nuweiba-Mzaina + Nuweiba-Tarabin).
The "New Sphinx-Hotel" is one of the very nice hotels in Dahab-Masbat. An other nice and Bedouin-owned hotel is the "Bedouin-Moon-Hotel" in Dahab-Assalah at the Blue Hole Road.
Nice places for snorkeling and diving are "Three pools", "Eelgarden", "The Canyon", "The Blue Hole".

The mountains & desert & Sea (Gulf of Aqaba) in Sinai are really great. The Bedouin guide you through the desert - some hours or days, as you like. I prefere to go to the desert with Bedouin - not with Egyptians, who tell you nice stories about the Bedouin, but never lived in the desert by themselves.
In Dahab (and Nuweiba) you can dive, snorkel, relax, visit the desert...
Sharm and Hurghada are the two most expensive places in Egypt, they are tourist-crowded places - it's nearly nothing "original" there.
If you stay in Dahab, you can visit Sharm by public bus or by taxi. And you can visit Hurghada by speed-ferry.
A good travel-agency in Dahab Masbat is "Catherine-Safari" - Essam & his wife To-Nga offer lots of daily or longer trips and they also help you if you have special travel-wishes.
