The Wadi El Raha Hotel: The nearest hotel to Mt. Sinai

by stamporama

We only slept here for 4 hours as we checked in at 8 pm then we were awakened at midnight to set off for the climb. The dining hall is a 5 min. walk under the blazing sun with a short uphill climb.

This is a compound of cottages where the facilities are basic and run-down, the beds and furnishings are old and have seen better days, the bathroom floor is slippery with rust stains on the tub. The food is not so tasty but just OK for sustenance. Why were we booked here? Because it's near (2 mins. away) the entrance of the trail to the St. Catherine monastery and the trail up Mt. Sinai. Other than for this reason, don't stay here at all.

St. Catherine Village Hotel

by Diana75

The village fits perfectly in the environment.

The bungalows of two apartments are made of red stone. Sometimes is quite difficult to identify it from the mountains around.

An apartment includes living room, bedroom, and bathroom with hot water, air conditioning, TV and refrigerator.

Everything it's very clean and comfortable.

Our Egyptian tour operator took care of everything and I don't know how much it costs but I supposed the price was quite convenient.

Mohammed Ali Camp, Dahab

by MalenaN

At Mohammed Ali Camp I fond a room with bathroom that I liked. It was on the upper floor and as I opened my window I could see the sea. The room was clean and had a fan and with walls and brown wooden furniture and doors. It was a room on the corner.
Mohammed Ali has got a lot of rooms round a big courtyard, some have air-condition and some have a fan, from some you can see the sea and from others you can’t.
For my room I paid 30 LE a night.

In the courtyard of Mohammed Ali Camp there is a big “tent” with low tables and cushions where breakfast is served. I had the same breakfast every morning: toast with butter, yoghurt, fresh fruit salad (a bowl with pieces of 4 – 5 different fruits) and Nescafe.
The breakfast was not included in the price of the room but cost 13 LE. There are of course also other choices for breakfast.

Monastery Guesthouse, St Katharina

by MalenaN

I stayed two nights at the Monastery Guesthouse by St Katherine’s Monastery. It is a nice and peaceful place. During the night loads of people come to climb Mt Sinai, but after visiting the monastery in the morning they all leave and it becomes very quiet.
The first evening I ate dinner and then went to bed to sleep for a few hours before climbing Mt Sinai. Coming down in the morning it was very convenient to have the breakfast in the restaurant while waiting for the monastery to open. After visiting the monastery I was glad I didn’t have to travel by bus some hours, but could go to my room to rest.
The price for a single room (two beds) with bathroom is 32 dollars (July 2005) and that includes breakfast and dinner.

Morgen Land Village: Surprisingly Nice

by Rachelynn

My eyes almost popped out when i saw the swimming pool. It's a huge swimming pool, i must say, bigger than alot of those 5 stars hotels!!!

It has a very tranquil and sturdy ambience, Set against the mountains of south sinai , Morgen Land Village is a very pleasant hostel.

Rooms are decent but you may wish to bring along an insect repellent. There were a lot of mosquitoes in my room.

Camp at the beach of the Gulf of Aqaba

by sachara

The last night in the Sinai we had our camp at a scenic beach at the Gulf of Aqaba, south of Taba. We had the beach for ourselves.
After the totally silence of the desert, we had now the noise of rolling waves during the night. Another big difference was the climate. After the cold nights in the desert it was rather warm at the coast. At the 31th of december wearing only a T-shirt in the sleepingbag was enough.

Wadi of the Gazelles, full board

by sachara

Also in our ''thousand stars hotel'' at the Wadi of the Gazelles we had a very good dinner. This time of macaroni, kofte and salad.
The both Bedouins ate together with us. The young one was the cameldriver of Chris and the old one guided our landcruiser to this place. After dinner the old man disappeared in the moonlight.
We didn't see the camel because its same colour as the environment, but in the bright moonlight we saw that the camel was very nearby.

Wadi of the Gazelles

by sachara

The Wadi of the Gazelles is a very scenic place with a spectacular coloured narrow canyon.
It is a favourite place where the bedouins like to stay overnight during a two days camel ride. An old Bedouin man showed us how we could reach this place with our landcruiser.
While we gathered wood, the old man disappeared somewhere walking in the sand between the mountains.
After we made our campfire, Chris, the one of us who made the camelride, arrived in the dusk with her camel and two drivers.

The place is very scenic, somewhere in the middle of nowhere, sheltered by mountains and rocks. The solitude and the silence of the desert are overwhelming.

Wood of pillars, bed and breakfast

by sachara

Not only a bed in the ''thousands star hotel'' (or tent if you prefer), but also a delicious breakfast every morning. It's amazing how our two boys from Cairo managed it everyday in the middle of nowhere. Warm bread -after a few days I find out they used the flame-thrower for that- with marmelade, eggs, goat cheese, tomatoes and lots of tea.

Tip Photo
Wood of pillars, sheltered place for the night

by sachara

Near the wood of pillars was a tiny valley, that gave us enough shelter against the cold blowing wind. Outside the Bedouin tent of the night before on the plain it was freezing cold. Allthough there were tents, we prefered the ''thousands stars hotel'' . And even in december a good sleeping bag and thermic underwear will do.
