First time to Egypt - Staying in Sharm at Stella Di Mare Htl - PLEASE HELP

by Michelles1979

Hi All,

I am going to Egypt for the first time ever in two and a half weeks. I am staying in the 5* Stella Di Mare Hotel & Spa.

Could you please help with a few of the questions below:

1. What is our hotel like?
2. What is Naam Bay like?
3. What are the general prices for food & drink?
4. Can you give general advice for a first time traveller to Egypt?

Thanks in advance.

I haven't stayed at Stella Di Mare so my comments will be regarding general questions you aksed. Naama Bay is a small but vibrant place with a lot of shops, restaurants, night clubs, coffee and shisha places. the best time to go there is definately at night (in day time it has slightly dusty and wornout appearance).

the main thing for a first time traveller to Egypt is to have patience and sense of humor. While in Sharm you be prepared to cultural difference when it comes to interaction with locals. From one side, you will most likely have extremely polite and well-mannered staff at the hotel, who will keep its distance and give you space. But as soon as you leave the hotel, you will encounter the complete opposite:
– persistently honking taxi drivers (don't take it personally, this is the way they tell you they are available to give you a ride)
- obnoxious salesmen who will do all possible to trick you into a conversation, then into their shop. they will follow you and tire you with the same questions: ‘where you from?’ ‘what’s your name?’ ‘would you like to see my shop for just a minute?’ etc. if you are traveling alone, or with other female be prepared for this “special attention.” Be prepared for a lot of attention and questions from “are you married?” to “would you like to see my place?” though with all fairness, I have to admit that things became much civilized at the Naama Bay compared to my previous visits in 2005 and 2007 – now at least half of salespeople will leave you alone, but the interaction style at the Old Market is the same. you are welcome to look through my tips to get more into on Sharm.

Christmas and New year and the pyramids

by xxxfayexxx

Hello i went to Egypt for Christmas and the New Year. It was still very hot however cooled off fairly early for the evening, and was a bit chilly in the night. I went to the pyramids when i was there it was a great experience and im glad i have seen it, However it did get rather boring the journey dragged and once we got to the pyramids we were waiting for a while till we could get into see the pyramids, i felt there was a lot of travelling and waiting about. It was a great experience for adults i think they will appreciate it more however i think for younger children it can become boring and tiring for them.

Convenient Rest Facilities

by kenmerk

And it goes without saying that having the convenience of an accessible under water Water Closet facility is not lost on the local diving community.

As such, here you can see a happy diver, in need of relief, decides to use to the local facilities rather than observing the time honour practice of pissing in one's wet suit...

Shisha pipe or Hookah

One thing you must try is the Shisha Pipe or a Hookah as its traditionally known. Its a strange sensation because as you smoke it instead of getting a harsh taste like you would a cigarette you get ... a fruity taste!! when we were over there they had a dedicated Shisha man in our hotel happy to bring you one. they cost 12LE which works out about £1.20.

For you non smokers out there dont worry its a very smooth experience and one that made me buy one for myself & bring it home!! there was no worry with customs. these things over there are in everyshop!!

For a real traditional experience sit on the little cushions in the evening over looking the sunset

~ Summer Clothing Needed All Year Round ~

by Heavens-Mirror

A rucksack is needed for any trips or excursions to pack all your everyday needs such as water, sun tan lotions, aspirin/imodium, Towels, camera and money. Lots of Summer clothing is needed, swim suits, bikinis, shorts, t-shirts, sandals and flip flops. Long trousers and long sleeved tops are needed if you are visiting holy places such as Mosques or monastries. In the winter months i would advise to take a light jacket for the evenings as it does get a little bit chilly as you are by the sea. However during the day it is always very warm sun bathing weather. Toiletries are widely available allover Sharm and are very cheap compared to England. You can buy them from the local pharmacies or supermarkets. A good camera is needed for Sharm, there lots of beautiful photo opportunities and fabulous sunsets to get some excellent photos. Also an underwater camera is ideal for any boat trips or snorkelling/diving. A good pair of sensible shoes is needed for any excursions you do where you will be walking in the heat. Also sunhats/sun glasses are needed as the heat in Egypt can become very hot. I would advise buying some hand sanitiser spray or gel as the money in Egypt is filthy, i have heard it is the money that can cause a bad tummy and not the food or climate like most people think. Therefore i always carry a bottle for when i cannot wash my hands.
Also take packets of tissues with you as not all public places have it in the toilets.

Emperor Divers

by ratherton

Emperor Divers had been recommended to me by a diving instructor I had spoken to on a previous trip to Egypt so this time I gave them a go.

I certainly wasn't disappointed. They are a very professionally run organisation and they also expect the qualified divers they take to 'do the right things' as well. Consequently, if you are diving alone, your allocated 'buddy' will probably be reasonably good.

In addition to diving, they have also sorted out our accomodation for my upcoming trip in April Personally, I prefer my own equipment but you can hire your own from Emperors if you want.
