More about Sol y Mar Sea Star Taba
Peace & Quiet
All the guides class the Sea Star as 4 stars, however, most people who've been there will tell you that it's probably a good 3 star hotel.
We stayed there at the beginning of May '06 for a week's all inclusive.
The first thing we noticed was that it really is in the middle of nowhere! There's virtually nothing nearby other than a security station about 500 meters down the road.
The rooms were clean, if a little dowdy and they were certainly spacious enough. Our room led onto a balcony overlooking the pool.
Food was a tad repetetive. It was basically the same food all week, with different spices thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately, there was nowhere else within a few miles to eat, so we were stuck with having to eat some very bland and rather unappetising food. The only plus point with this was that the cooks (most notably Osama) made up for it with his witty humour.
Weather was fantastic all week. It was not busy at the hotel, so we pretty much had the pool and beach to ourselves.
Staff were really friendly and loved to have a laugh and joke with the guests. All spoke very good English and were full of helpful advice.
Israel is just down the road (only about 6 KM from the border) so we went on a trip to the Dead Sea and Mt Mossada. I would recomend this to everyone. very interesting.
There's a nice coral reef just off the beach which is absolutely full of fish for the snorkellers amongst you. The nearest Dive Centre is attached to the Taba Hilton, which is on the border with Israel. The centre runs a free bus to all those wishing to go diving. We went for a try-dive and thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff at the centre were excellent and made us feel very welcome, despite never having dived before. We're both now qualified divers, and can put this down to the staff at Aqua Sport showing us the light!
If you're looking for somewhere to get away from it all and to relax in the sun, in reasonable, if not luxurios comfort, then this is the place for you. If, on the other hand, you want to experience a bit more variety and nightlife, you should cross this place of your list. Go to Sharm.
We really enjoyed the Sea Star, although the basic food was a bit of a fly in the ointment. That said, I would definately go back (indeed we should be booking up again soon). I could put up with the bad food again, as everything else made up for it.
Everything we expected!!!!!!!!
Came here as a group of 6 20somethings looking for a place to completely relax and get away from it all. We got exactly that and actually more.
The hotel is set in a great quiet isolated place. Can't understand why people moan about the location when everything tells you this hotel is on its own. We loved it.
The beach was brilliant. Most of the time there were only about 10 people on the beach and that included the 6 of us. Not suprising really when there were only about 40 guests in the hotel. Even better for us because the service was more personal and there was no need to wait for a drink at the beach bar or the bar in the hotel.
The hotel grounds are lovely and the pools are amazing. Only one pool heated (yes heated) when we were there, fair enough really for the amount of guests.
Rooms were a great size and the beds were really comfy. Bathrooms were adequate but in need of a bit of grouting. Changing rooms not hit Egypt yet then!!!!!!
Hotel bar area etc a bit dated but reception was nice and clean.
Food was great some days and other days well just boring but hey still managed to stuff our faces. Deserts excellent!!!!!!!! Bar and Waiter staff were quite unfriendly at first, only with the guys but soon got friendly once one was tipped.... Hotel opened the disco especially for us when we requested, nice touch.
They can't stop staring at the girls though and the 3 we were with found it quite intimidating and wouldn't go anywhere on their own. As a guy found that if you stare back long enough they soon look away.
Overall we had a great week, beach was the best and the holiday was so cheap that you feel a bit cheeky complaing about the small things.
Take spare loo roll
We (3 young single 20-somethings), stayed for 2 weeks in August 2006. The weather was faultless - perfect sun for 2 weeks. Quite unbearable during the day at times, but a lovely cool breeze picks up each evening after sundown. The food was okay - very similiar everyday (note - if you have eggs for breakfast, make sure that they are cooked right through) The All Inclusive option was very tight (even in a group of 3, we could only have 2 drinks at a time, so 2 of us had to queue up for 3 drinks) Near the end of the holiday, we were watched like hawks with regards to filling up water bottles from the water machine (how can they deny people water when it is over 100 degrees?) They stopped serving "free" drinks at 11pm sharp - even though some holiday brochures stated that they were open until midnight.
Most of the staff were friendly (bit sleazy), but English was not their strong point. There was NO ENTERTAINMENT during the evenings, unless you can count the half an hour belly dancing act that was repeated twice weekly. Don't get us wrong, we were not looking for wild clubs and dancing podiums, but there was no entertainment whatsoever, and we (and the other guests) were highly disappointed in this.
Sunbeds were hard to come by around by the pool (and apparantly the hotel wasn't even half full!), so you need to get in witht the pool guy quickly so he will save you a bed in your regular spot.
Nearly everyone we spoke to had an upset stomach of some sort during their stay - and without going into too much graphic details, I don't mean the usual upset belly - MAJOR stomach gripes and a serious fight for the toilet. In a way, I do believe that the illnesses around the pool "bonded" the guests all together!!
Personally I wouldn't go back to this resort/hotel again - it is far too quiet with very little to do except count how many tiles are on the bathroom wall. I had a fantastic holiday because of the people I was with and the friends that we made. Isn't that what holidays are all about????
this was a fantastic hotel the staff are very freindly they coulndnt do enough for us the food was of a very good standard we never once suffered from upset stomach, i suffered a chest infection the first few days and our thomson rep was brill he went to the pharmacy and got me some medication was feeling better within a couple of days, the staff at this hotel work extremely hard and nothing is to much trouble they went out of theire way to ensure we had a brill holiday , the staff are constantly cleaning this hotel was immaculate our room was cleaned every day and our beds changed every day although this hotel is very secluded there was plenty for our 12 year old daughter to do, there is a guy on the pool area all day and he was fantastic with all the guests and the children, the resturant staff went out of there way to ensure every meal was fabulous although the only meats served were beef and chicken and fish you dont get bored of it as it was not cooked the same way the entire 14 days we were there.
My husband and i and our daughter thoroghly enjoyed this hotel and our holiday and would strongly recommend this hotel without hesitation, and will definately be going back.
Fabulous and Friendly Perfect Palace
This hotel is PERFECT TRANQUIL BLISS for a beautiful holiday and I could not recommend better. We have visited the Sea Star on two other occasions in the last 2 years and each time we cannot wait to return back. It has a beautiful setting with only a very short walk to the sea. One returns home perfectly relaxed.
The hotel management and staff coud not do enough to help for everything requested . Our dear friend Ashraf at the poolside is always happy and pleasant , no need to pack towels for this venue and the majority of the staff speak good English, always keen to chat even when they are very busy and working hard.
The food is very acceptable , the bread is remarkably soft and fresh, cooked daily on the premises, soups and salads fantastic and every day there is always a choice of fish, chicken, beef cooked in different styles or iindividually cooked pastas or diet foods. The sweets / desserts are UNBELIEVABLE! We found them irresistable and deliciious - GREAT CHEF! - if you can cope further there is also a huge variety of fruit and scrumptious cheeses to follow. Pharaoh wines, beers & softdrinks can be taken from the bar into the restaurant and repenished often.
The hotel has a pleasant layout, certainly quiet at this time of year ( one reason we came .) .The small swimming pool is heated ( the sea is warm also) and the fitness equipment free- you need this after eating and drinking so much.!
What annoyed us most was the number of English holiday -makers who arrived ' moaning' about how quiet it was and how this hotel was not up to a 4 star standard , there wasn't discos every night and how the food had given them upset tummies! What a pain some of them were! Perhaps they should travel more often or research 'trip advisor' before they book! Yes - here at local Taba chemist you can buy broad spectrum antibiotics for £1.30- it is the change of food and water and can happen anywhere from home!
Sincere thanks especially to Emaad (very efficient waiter), Gamel( wonderful cocktails , Ahmed ( Amazing Vegetable Sculptures) Amar and above all Tarek, -manager who made the holiday one of the VERY BESTwe have experienced in many years. Would RECOMMENDED the SEA STAR to any one , we will definitely return later this year!
yes, it is remote, and the security may spook you a little, but we took our 4 children there for a week and it was fantastic.
The weather helped, 30 degrees most days, so take your sunscreen and hats.
Food, excellant, loads of choice, and one of mine has a nut allergy, but the staff were brill, and checked for us constantly. I have never been anywhere and been so pampered and looked after. They are a credit to the hotel, and made our stay perfect. Imagine lying on the beach, and being asked if you would like a drink? Heaven!
Any moans? Well, there was no kids club [Too early in season according to rep], but it was so quite that all the kids there made friends straight away, and therefore we as parents did too. THe excursions seemed expensive, but won't commemt as we chose not to ypartake.
Can't wait to go back, all my stress just dissapeared.
Does exactly what it says on the tin...
I stayed at the Sol Y Mar Seastar with my girlfriend from 17th Feb to the 24th Feb and loved it.
There are plenty of trips to keep people busy but If you want a relaxing break away which consists of Breakfast-Pool-Lunch-Beach-Dinner-Bar then this is perfect.
The staff are helpful (especially the pool guy!) and the hotel is always clean and tidy with drinks on tap. The pools are very nice if a little cold and they even have a good little football pitch where we played against the workers!
The food is good, if a little bit repetitive but over the week they cover most of the areas of food you would want and try to break it up with a BBQ. The omelettes and pancakes in the morning are especially nice! We also had dinner at the Italian resturant which was nice and cost us 28p!!
We met some good people there (Hello Pip, Jill, Lyndsey, Becks, Mr Hulk and Nicky!) and would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a week away in the sun to relax.
A great holiday
The Sea Star is in an isolated and remote location between the mountains and the Red Sea. The nearest place locally to visit is Taba Hieghts which is a small centre with a few shops and restaurants where you can buy gifts and essentials. To and from Taba Heights is £15 (GB) in a Taxi.
Back to the Sea Star.
Beach, a short walk along the road, with a bar, well maintained, clean and with clear water. Be carefull the beach can "drop away" in places so small children can be out of their depth when thay are not too far from the shore.
Room, clean, bright, well serviced with seperate bathroom, mini bar (chargeable) balcony, air conditioning and so on. The rooms are cleaned and prepared to a high standard every day.
Pools, four maintained and cleaned every day, lots of towels and sun beds, and lots of sunny areas.
Food, good, buffet style, large selection and good variety.
Staff, absolutely brilliant all of them, in the restaurant, reception etc. They are genuinely helpfull and curteous.
Grounds, very nice, cleaned, watered and maintained every day.
Other, pool, table tennis and darts can be played, and in the evening they had belly dancing, a movie and bingo in the Disco. These were not well attended as we visited in March/April when the occupancy would not be as high as in the summer months.
Reps, Chantell (Libra) and Shehab (Local guide and translator) provide a service over and above that expected and/or anticipated. Both are brilliant especially Shehab, a gentlemen.
There are a couble of small shops on site which are expensive and "pushy" in my opinion.
Security, hotel security is in place, as it is at all hotels, and be prepared to show your passport if you leave the area every time at check points etc.
Summary, a great hotel for a quiet relaxing holiday, if you want an action pasked holiday in the middle of everything this is not for you I feel. Children may not really like the location due to th fact that it is isolated with little for them to do if they do not like chilling out, and taking it easy.
Transfer time from the airport is 30 minutes.
Currency 10 Egyptian Pounds to 1 GB Pound.
A variety if trips are available bit all involve extended travel and in my opinion are over priced but not to be missed, for example Jordan, Cairo and so on.
Two weeks at this location as a resort holiday with no trips or visits to Taba Heights may result in "Cabin Fever" for some.
We all have different expectations and standards, the above is mine and I enjoyed the holiday overall and have no real complaints.
Relaxing and quiet
This hotel is great if you are looking for a break away from it all.
It is isolated, the other hotels at Taba border and Taba Heights are a 10 min taxi ride away, so definately worth taking the all-inclusive
option! The Sea Star has all you need with friendly staff, buffet meals, 2 lovely pools -one with a swim-up bar, an indoor bar and a private beach with bar. The beach is a 5 minute walk from the hotel and there is a shuttle bus for those who don't feel like walking! There are also a couple of shops, that sell goods for reasonable prices and a travel agent for booking any day trips.
The location of the hotel is good for rest & relaxation and also for exploring nearby Eilat or Jordan. There is a free shuttle bus that runs from the hotel to Taba at the Egypt/Israel border in the morning
and returns in the afternoon. There is a foreign exchange in the Taba
Hilton (at the border) where you can change money into Shekels for Israel. We walked across the border (obvioulsy, take your passport) and then caught a taxi into Eilat shopping centre, which cost the equivalent of £5. Taxis to Dolphin Reef cost about £3 where you can snorkel or scuba-dive with dolphins - fantastic! You should pre-book your dolphin swim as it very popular; you can do this with the hotel travel agent. Taxis are metered in Eilat and very readily available -a cheaper option than going on a bus trip from the hotel.
There are not many organised activities at the hotel so it is suitable for those who want a quiet holiday. I'd rate the Sea Star hotel and it's facilities as a good 3*. If you want more activities (but still fairly quiet) then choose one of the hotels in nearby Taba Heights.
Absolutely Fantastic - The Ultimate in Relaxation
We've just returned from a week in Taba and it was fantastic. We were looking for a very quiet, relaxing break and this was exactly what we found. The hotel was immaculate, the food fantastic, the staff were unbelievable. Nothing was too much trouble. Kids disco every night which the kids loved. Waleed and Mohammed (entertainment) were first class. Everybody was there for the same type of holiday and from day 1 everybody started to get to know one another which made the holiday even more friendly. Lot;s of team games which encouraged everyone to mingle. It really was superb. Very safe and secure and the children could wander round perfectly safely. Can't wait to go again!!!
