 | | | | Little Garden Hotel: The Best $24 per Night You'll Ever Spend | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I can't say enough about this place! Little Garden calls itself an "oasis" on their website and they couldn't have chosen a better word to describe it. This hotel is located in the midst of garbage and run-down buildings - you're almost scared to even be in the neighborhood until you see Little Garden. This yellow building with its glass doors and botanical courtyard is the perfect place to call home during your stay in Luxor. They have a good restaurant on site, room service, televisions (request one), 24-hour internet access (dial-up), and balconies that are almost bigger than your room. Best of all, the rooms are incredibly stark clean - if you drop a gob of jelly on the floor, don't be afraid to wipe it back up with your finger and eat it. It's *that* clean. The location is fairly good - you can walk to the Nile or Luxor Temple in maybe 20 minutes or so. There are a few English-speaking restaurants in the area, one of them had pretty good pizza. But don't eat at a little place called MishMish Restaurant, it's right down the street from Little Garden and is absolutely disgusting. The manager at this hotel is wonderful - he sat with us and chatted a bit, and once we saw him at the train station and he told us, "I'm here for you if you need my assistance." I only have two complaints about this place. The first is incredibly minor: there's not a really good view from here. The surrounding buildings are too tall and block the view. But for $24, I don't even need to have windows. The second complaint - or better, word of advice: do not purchase a tour from this hotel unless you have an idea of how much to barter for. Look elsewhere or just catch taxis everywhere. We basically paid for just a driver to cart us around - we didn't get an actual guide to explain anything to us. I get the feeling we paid more than we should have for just a driver.
The hotel maids are all female, and seem to be very demure and quiet. However, we came back to the hotel one night to find that one of the maids had made a little doll for us out of towels, a scarf, my glasses and cigarettes. This gave me a new outlook on the women of Egypt - there may be a wonderfully whimsical sense of humor hiding beneath those scarves. | | | | Old Winter Palace Hotel: A hotel fit for royalty | Tip Rating: | | | | |
OK, I couldn't possibly afford to stay here, but this hotel is worth featuring for its historical signficance. Completed in 1886 on the east bank of the Nile amidst lovingly-landscaped gardens, the Winter Palace Hotel exudes a romantic Victorian aura that has captivated celebrities and royalty alike. It is told that the hotel's first new year's eve party, a masked costume ball, was attended by crown princes and princesses from Europe and Far East. The hotel's august guest list includes: ing Farouk and King Fouad of Egypt, the Agha Khan, Empress Eugenie of France, the Tsar and Tsarina of Russia, King Juan Carlos of Spain and Prince Charles. Sir Winston Churchill, Field Marshal Montgomery, President Giscard d'Estaing, President Gamal Abd el Nasser, President Anwar El Sadat and President Hosny Moubarak. President Jimmy Carter and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Margaret Tatcher and Chancellor Helmut Kohl, Agatha Christie and archeologist Howard Carter (of Tatankhamun's tomb fame), veteran Egyptian actor Omar El Sherif, etc. The hotel is now ran by the Sofitel hotel group. There is a new wing, flatly called New Winter Palace Hotel, that does not even possess an ounce of the old wing's grandeur (and history, needless to say). So if you have a fat bank account and want to be pampered like royalty, this is the hotel for you. Just be kind enough to share your experience with us.
