The colonial architecture of Luxor station
I was in Luxor in October 2009 and much of area near the Luxor temple was razed. We could not find the souk. Has anyone seen the souk since Oct 2009? If so, where is it? Corinna
Yes, it is still there. But it has lost a lot of its charm since local government decided to turn it into some kind of indoor shopping centre. That goes the same for the Aswan souk.
The tourist souq is still there, but the place to go to is the local souq - follow the tourist souq until you reach a steel barrier at a large street and cross over - this is where the local souq begins - much more fun, the locals shop here - you know where it is when you are on dirt, so watch where you walk very carefully!
We have stayed in Luxor (west bank) several times and found that ALI, who runs the Africa Restaurant close to the ferry, is always knowledgable and helpful. He also has a taxi and is an authorised guide. His international telephone number is 0020123658722.

When I arrived in Luxor I had a chance to watch an Egyptian wedding reception outside my window. It was interesting to watch how the whole street paid their respects and were getting involved in the festivities. It was very loud but the party ended around midnight so that everybody on the street could get a good rest for the night.
When you’re in Luxor or planning a trip to Luxor, you should really take your time as Luxor offers a lot to see. Luxor is as I said before a museum itself. You step in a town, with antiques and modern things all mixed in one.
Making a boattrip is relaxing and to see the skyline of Luxor from the water is fantastic, but I like also to see the daily life at the riverside. You see playing and waving kids, fishermen, all kinds of transports by boat.
And if you're not on the boat to see the life near the villages, it's nice to sit on a bench at the Corniche and look at the life in the city.
I always seem to find myself is out of the way places on Christmas day. This year is was aboard a "Love Boat" type cruise ship docked in Luxor ready to set sail for Aswan.
Last year was aboard the Welllington-Picton Ferry in New Zealand, and the year before was up in the heart of the Golden Triangle in Northern Burma drinking moonshine with some hill tribers...
Suppose one day I'll settle down for the a more traditional Christmas ...
