Luxor's Best

The Le Meridien Luxor is one of the newest hotels, beautifully situated along the banks of the mighty river Nile. Rooms are located around a big court yard, that offers restaurants, a cafe and shops. Rooms are spacious and service has improved in recent months.
A beautiful pool with also allows one to cool off from the Egyptian heat.

Unique Quality: The hotel offers all facilities a 5 Star Hotel would offer. Several restaurants are found in the court yard as well as in the lower floor of the hotel.
One recommendation - try one of the water pipes... my favourite is Apple Flavour, they are being served in the court yard and a great treat after a busy day of exploring antiquities.

Le Meridien - *****

One of the newest and most luxurious hotels in Luxor. Nile View rooms can be a little restricting with respect to the view of the Nile.

The location is very good being next to shops and a short walk from the Sheraton. The hotel has no courtesy bus unlike some of the other hotels, so you need will require taxis to get to and from Luxor.

The food, and packed lunches, is the best we've had in a hotel in Luxor.

Overall an excellent hotel, but not much character unlike the Sonesta St George next door.

Unique Quality: Good food, good location and newly built.

  • Opinion of Price: more expensive than average

Luxor's latest 5* hotel

Absolute luxury. I didn't have the good fortune to stay here but I couldn't resist having a good look around. This hotel is newly built, no broken air con units or bare carpets. I had a tour of standard room, Nile view and junior suites. They were all of a very high standard with lots of wardrobe and drawer space (top priority for me). The junior suite had a walk-in shower with a 1 inch step - ideal for the elderly or infirm.

Unique Quality: The hotel has an inner courtyard with water fountain and some rooms face this.

You can log on to the internet at their business centre on the first floor - be aware that you are charged for a full hour. If you are on for 1 hour 10 mins, they charge you for 2 hours and so on.

Any good pubs in luxor, and what is the nile palace like

by Blue-fox

I am going to Luxor again in a few weeks, can anyone recommend any good pubs or places to eat out @.
I went last year and did a cruise, that was great, and really fancied coming back and seeing more of Luxor. I have booked to stay in the Nile palace, is this good hotel to stay @ and is it expensive.

Thanks for any replies received.

Love laura

Hi there. If you've been to Luxor before, then you'll know that Egypt in general is not a place which has an "alcohol culture". Although there are a couple of European type pubs, I should think that the "type" part of that description would prove to be the most accurate part lol. Really though, heat and alcohol don't go well together. The bars in the nice hotels can be very pleasant, if a trifle expensive.
Eating out in Luxor can be very varied. Sites such as luxortraveltips.com and tripadvisor.com (Luxor page) have many restaurants listed, with some quality reviews. Again, the alcohol-less culture prevails and most restaurants are not licensed. My absolute favourite is the Salahadeen Restaurant and Bar at Mara House. The food is Egyptian, tastes wonderful and (in quantity) is more than any normal person could actually manage to eat. The furnishings are very traditional in style and the service excellent. A bottle of wine is slightly more expensive than in some of the less classy places, but considerably cheaper than in the hotels. Nearby the Nile Palace are a number of "English" restaurants which cater for the unadventurous tourists. The hotel also has a number of restaurants which come recommended.
Actually, the Nile Palace is a lovely hotel. Although I haven't stayed there, my wife and I are regular visitors for tea and coffee. (By the way, I judge their Irish Coffee to be the very best in Luxor!) We also enjoy the free nightly floor show, of Whirling Dervishes and a dance troop; very good. We have been shown a selsction of the rooms available, both when the hotel was first opening and again last year. On both occasions we were suitably impressed, the decor, furnishings and general condition were excellent.
Although a little removed from the town centre, the hotel's location isn't bad. The main drawback might be that because of its proximity to several other good quality hotels, there are also a good many tourist shops and insistant shopkeepers and intrusive taxi and caleshe men always hassling!
A walk into the real town centre will take about 30 minutes at a reasonably sedate pace.
I hope that you enjoy Luxor as much as we did while we were tourists.
Best wishes,
Edward.
