Emerald Red Sea
by Tanechka
First time in my life i tried snorkeling. I was deeply surprised by wariety
of underwater life . Trips to the coral islands are very cheap and if you are not so much
satisfied by your hotel beach , best decision is to pay 10$ and get a
paradise trip with dinner on a ship board.
what to pack
by LexiB
Swim suit
shorts
flip flops
summer dresses
khakis
sturdy shoes (if you plan on going on any excursions to Luxor)
hat (very important)
Although, it wasn't enforced, be sensitive to the culture and the dress code. I witnessed plenty of tourists (European) traipsing around the major sites in nothing more than bikini tops, mini-mini skirts, or Daisy Dukes shorts. . .and we're called "Ugly Americans"?? sunblock (the sun can be quite brutal in the summer)
imodium-AD (because you just might get the runs if you're not careful on what you eat) a disposable underwater camera was a great addition
plenty of film
camera batteries Camelbak hydration system. I can't tell you what a lifesaver this was. It beats lugging your water around in those cumbersome bottles when you can take that same bottle to fill up your Camelbak and sling it across your back. Yes, it is quite pricey, but it's money well spent. There are different sorts of bags that are sold; you can get the basic model or you can go all out and get one that looks like a rucksack but also holds your water resorvoir. believe it or not, PENCILS, they're great to give for baksheesh rather than money. I found it was very well recieved by the locals when I took their pictures. I brought 6 packs of pencils with me and was able to give most of them away.
People seem to be very sick here
by lotharlerch about Pharmacy, Apotheke, Apteka etc.
People living in Hurghada - both locals and tourists - seem to be very sick, at least if you look at the number of Pharmacies. About every third shop is one. They are the place to buy normal hygienic articles, you get much of that what you know from your home country. And I could read from many other VTers who built pages on Hurghada that they sell here very efficient medication to treat digestion upsets which might come from the food here. We were lucky, we got good food and never had any problem so we did not need these tablets.
What all the Pharmacies advertize - even larger than their own name - is Viagra. Four years ago in Cairo it were different mysterious things to help build up the muscles but this has obviously disappeared. Maybe this is the reason why they need Viagra now. It seems that you get the mysterious blue wonder here without a doctor's prescription - which is dangerous enough even if it might be close to the real thing but imagine it is not a placebo but a third world fake like the stuff sold via the web.... But I am sure it helps to them who believe in it....
I just wonder what the Egyptians are doing with all the Viagra - it seems that there are almost no local women living in Hurghada... Viagra fakes ????????
convoy
by TomorrowsAngel
The Egyptian government doesn't allow foreigners to cross the wide desert between Luxor and Hurghada without a convoy.
For security reasons, and fear of terrorism, this road is highly guarded. The convoys are secured and escorted by the submachine gun toting police.
Our group had to be at a certain place by 0700, which was when the convoy left. The convoy was made up of at least 50 buses and 4WDs. Police blocked traffic intersections and crossroads the whole way to Hurghada which made the trip pretty speedy.
Under water life
by Saladinos
If you are in the red sea area so one of the main reasons beside looking at the sea from the beach should be trying to live and unite with the nature.
Snorkling is a perfect idea in addition to glass boats. You will get the chance to feel some of the most attractive creatures in life. The colourful fish.
