The Egyptian government doesn't allow foreigners to cross the wide desert between Luxor and Hurghada without a convoy.For security reasons, and fear of terrorism, this road is highly guarded. The convoys are secured and escorted by the submachine gun toting police.
Our group had to be at a certain place by 0700, which was when the convoy left. The convoy was made up of at least 50 buses and 4WDs. Police blocked traffic intersections and crossroads the whole way to Hurghada which made the trip pretty speedy.
