Changing money
I really don't know if this tip is a common local custom.
But there where so many men asking us to change their Euro coins into banknotes.
Give them a helping hand, because most of the banks don't change coins.

Hurghada - Walking along
Hi,
does anybody know a good hotel in Hurghada? I do not really like those all inclusive ones. Maybe there are also family-run opportunities? Also I would be happy about good tips on restaurants, or things to do.
Thanx Chris.
Hi, I have been to Hurghada twice and have stayed in 3 places. The Prima Life resort in Makadi (south of Hurghada) is 5 star but everything is included - food, drinks (even alcohol). There are pools and of course the Red Sea - great for families but not much else to do if you don't like to spend all you day on the beach - it is difficult to find things to do out side. - I know you said you don't like these - I don't either. I have also stayed at the Seagull (4*) resort in Hurghada itself - right in the centre and close to all the shops and restaurants. The Starfish is an excellent sea food restaurant. All tour information is available. In north Hurghada I stayed at Hotel Geisum - about 3* - quite comfortable but a fair way from the centre of things - not within walking distance.
Regarding things to do - if you don't like the water and sun you will have trouble. There are boat trips and snorkelling and submarines. On my last trip I did a PADI open water SCUBA course. check out my travel page for Hurghada
If you're looking for more of a taste of Hurghada than the resorts provide (as your post suggest), then get a hotel in El Dahar. I live here ;)
The Three Corners Empire Hotel provides a decent service and has a sister hotel on the beach for those days when you want to get down there.
Cheaper alternatives are El Geisum (great beach), El Arousa (uses Sand Beach beach), Cinderella (uses Geisum beach), Hotel Diana - there are loads.
Restaurants in Dahar: Kanaria's (opposite Diana hotel, local family run, cheap and great seafood and steaks), Red Sea Revue(?) down the road from the Three Corners - great seafood and parties. Mandarine (great lebanese), the Argentinian Steak House (best steaks) - lots!
A 10 LE taxi ride will get you into Sakalla where there are too many restaurants to mention (El Mina, El Joker) and all the tourist nightlife you could wish for.
Hope this helps,

In Hurghada town, there's a barber that shaves with a kind of thread that he holds bewteen his teeth. He rolls the thread over your skin and plucks your eyebrows.
He likes to give women a good body rub too!
It's in the street that leads towards Papa's Bar
Camels are great for that photo op, but to get anywhere in a hurry, 4WD's are the only way to go. (except maybe one of those ATV's that they also rent here..)
Be sure the driver brings spare tires, and a shovel to dig the thing out should it get stuck in a gully along the way. Our jeep broke down on the way back to Hurghada in pitch darkness. (Quickly found out that the air filter was completely clogged with sand....)
I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't want to get left out here all night alone...
The Red Sea is fantastic and Hurghada offers actually quite ok diving, better than the reputation! We spent a week relaxing in Hurghada and dived for 5 days with a small diving center called Prince Diving in El Dahar. We had a really great time! First day we snorkelled with 8 dolphins, the second day we saw 2 hugh sea turtles and the tird day the biggest eagle ray I ever seen. Not bad. I have heared people say that the corals are damaged, but at least the places we vistited was in good shape. My favorite place must have been Shaab El Erg, nice corals and my first time in the water with dolphins.
We went through our agents to book our excursion. Just keep one thing in mind: you might want to bring your own gear. My niece had no trouble with hers, but my mask didn't have a very good seal, so I ended up swimming instead. I still had a good time though.
