from Hurghada to Petra

by tetahejta

Hello,

I'm coming to Hurghada in august this year, and Im interested to visit Petra in Jordan. So, what I wanted to know is there a ferry from Hurghada to Sharm el Sheikh, and what is the price? Then, from Sharm el sheikh i was thinking to take a bus to Aqaba or somewhere near, so if you know some web adress where i can get timetable an prices, please let me know. Then from Aqaba, i guess i could catch a taxi or also a bus to Petra. I would like to know how much money do I need for transportation? Any information about this would be appreciated a lot!!! or if you have some better idea how to get from Hurghada to Petra post it please!

Thanx a lot!!!

Bus to Sharm el Sheikh (or Nuweiba) will be cheaper, but much slower. I don´t think there is a bus Sharm el Sheikh to Aqaba, but a Ferry :

I went to Petra last week but i was in Jordan already.Return taxi from Amman to Petra was 90JD so i recon it will be cheaper from Agaba as it is closer. If you enter Jordan from Agaba site, you dont need to pay for visa (10JD) but the entrance to Petra is quiet expensive 33JD for a day. Please go to Petra as early as possible otherwise you'll be dissapointed how crowded it becomes in the afternoon. Personaly i didnt enjoy Petra that much-first because i went there for one day/afternoon and it wasnt enough time to see everything, second i was there at 11am and it was so crowded that i havent got the feeling of the mystery of the place...It up to you but i would recomend to get another holidays and go for a week to dead sea and then stay in Petra for at least 2 or 3 days.

Travel Tips for Hurghada

Enjoy Hurghada

by Beograd

What ever you do, enjoy. Carpe Diem. No matter how hot it get's, don't forget it's what comes with your visit to Egypt and Hurghada. This is a town where rain hasn't fallen since 1996.

I remember being a bit frightened the first evening there. You know all the talks how dangerous it is there, especially for women traveling alone. Well, forget all those talks. It can be dangerous, but it can be anywhere if you don't use your head. My fondest memories are of Zeinab, Ashraf and Ghaydaa, of course. I must say that I love everything about Hurghada. I met many people, and with some I am still in contact and see them in Belgrade. All of them were people who saw Egypt for the first time.

General Things You Might Want To Bring

by Kushelkitten

Backpack- many hotels dont like you bringing water and food in but you can pay less outside and its a good way to carry it around. Sturdy shoes for walking in the desert should you take a safari Sunscreen with a high SPF factor, antibiotic ointment for in case you scrape you knees on the coral (ouch!) Bring an underwater camera. The little disposible kind by Kodak work just fine. You will want to document the beautiful fish you see. You dont have to bring it but you might want to purchase your own snorkel and mask.

Impressive lighting at night

by Sambawalk about Souq

When I was there at end April 2006, the street in the souq was virutally empty. Why? I have no idea. The business may be affected by the dahab bomb blast on 25 April 2006, or may be it is low season.

I passed by some lighting shops and they are so impressive when all those lamps, lights were on. It is a good place to shop. I didnt ask for the price of any lights, so I dont know how much the lamps are.

boats

by Aurorae

There are many boats making excursions, snorkeling and scuba diving tours, almost on every corner you'll find them, and go as you please. There is a small port every couple of hundreds of meters in Hurghada. The boats are very active in the late afternoon as they come back from their trips, so watch around where you swim/dive!

Boat trip to Mahmaya Island

by ZolaBlue

We went on an organised boat trip from Hurghada to Mahmaya Island - described as Paradise Island - and indeed it was.

The boat journey takes about 50 mins to this idealic unpopulated island with beautiful sand and coral reefs just off the shore.

We were given 2 hours on the beach before jumping back on the boat to be taken further out to sea where we were given 45 mins to snorkel amongst some of the best reefs in the Red Sea. We were told by others that you quite frequently get to see wild dolphins, unfortunately they were elsewhere on our day.

We then went back to the island, had an excellent lunch (included in the price) and allowed another 1.5 hours to relax and do whatever we wanted before catching the boat back to Hurghada.

The trip cost 50 euros and included transfers to and from the hotel and lunch. Drinks were not included in the price but were cheap.

I would definitely recommend this trip to all budding snorkellers.
