Comfort far from the centre

I have a bit of addiction to staying at Sheratons, and I basically made my decision to stay here based on the name of the hotel. In retrospect, I should have investigated where the hotel was on a map before I started to make all of my plans. The hotel is quite some distance (over 25km) from the historic old part of the city, and you can easily rack up quite a hefty bill in taxis if you insist on going too and from the old part of the city in one day. The shops and restaurants around the hotel generally close by about nightfall, so it can be quite a challenge to find stuff nearby if you're looking for a bite to eat. That said, the hotel is a clean and modern establishment with nice views of the sea and comfortable facilities. The staff are friendly and very helpful. We were given a suite on one of the upper floors of the hotel, which included a spacious bathroom, including a beautiful shower, a large bed with a great matress, and a sitting room that had a large screen TV. Essentially, if you were looking for a place to relax on an evening, it would very easy to enjoy yourself without ever leaving the room.

Unique Quality: I didn't have a chance to see the fitness facilities or the pool at this particular hotel, as we were trying to get as much out of the short time that we had in Alexandria as possible. In truth, the most attractive part of the experience at the hotel was the room itself. Given the price of the place, I had really expected something much older and in poorer shape than what I had found.

Definitely NOT a 5 Star Hotel

While it doesn't constitute "seedy", this hotel definitely does not live up to a 5 star rating. Cleanliness is low on the list, with bathrooms having spots of goop and dirt on the floors, dirty cushions on the seats, dirty light switches. The lobby is virtually non-existent, as the only seating is for the coffee shop, and dingey. Amenities are few - if you want to have a glass of wine outside on the few outdoor tables, forget about it, you can only drink inside the non-descript hotel bar that could just as easily be in Detroit, and hotel service is pretty bad. The hotel is also very isolated, extremely far from the center of town or any of the things you'd like to see or walk to in Alexandria (it's a good 30-40 minute cab ride to the Biblioteca or the Fort of Quaitbay), and walking around the streets around the hotel is really a waste of time, unless what you'd like to see are overflowing dumpsters and abandoned buildings. The hotel has a small beach that is relatively clean, but it doesn't connect to any of the other beaches, so don't plan to go walking along the beach, unless you'd like to retrace your steps over and over again. The only saving grace for this hotel is that it is across the street to the entrance of the Montazah Palace gardens (by the way, it is NOT in the gardens, as suggested by some of the other comments posted here).

Nice hotel, nice view

Good staff willing to make the most of your stay. nicely appointed room, if not big. Nice view over the sea and the nearby gardens of King Farouk. Single room (via internet) USD 85.

Hotel car park: LE 11 (not a lot of money, but a little annoying, also because the parking attendants require you to leave with them two "IDs" as some sort of security).

Unique Quality: Just everything as you'd want it to be.

The best there is

Well we were guests for 3 weeks prior to finding permanent accom. Rooms where compact, the mini bar fridge smelt really bad like it had never been cleaned. The kettle smelled like someone had cooked in it. dont expect much if you are taking children there, the playground has one swing.
A plus is its location, if you stay ask for a room facing the sea and you wont hear the mosque in the early hours.

Near the sea and Montazah palace

I did like the hotel, good service.
The service and the food, in an italian restaurant, in the hotel was very good.

Unique Quality: The view from the balcony was beautiful. The Montazah palace area is just around the corner from the hotel.

Sheraton Hotel

One of the best hotels in Alexandria that have a private beach infront of it.It's located in a very nice area in Montaza. From it's 1th floor you can almost see all the area around it ...
Here some photos from the 15th floor of Sheraton Montaza Hotel.
By the way it's a luxury hotel 5 stars .

Perfect place with a weak service

My stay was fine in the hotel. Its location is great and you can eat in more than 1 location in the hotel. They have a swimming pool that is not very big. at night they have one of the best discotheques in Alexandria called Aquarious.
Their only problem is the service and the maintenance of the rooms.

Unique Quality: Sea view.
The opposite end from city center.

The second choice

Because my plane from Alexandria to Frankfurt could not take off as scheduled all passengers and the crew were brought at 6 in the morning from the airport to the hotel and got rooms to sleep there until 14:30 for which Lufthansa paid.

Unique Quality: This hotel ranks in the same price class as Helnan Palestine but is far less pleasant. It is just across the street outside the walls surrounding the Montaza gardens and all views are far less spectacular.

Five stars in King Faruk's garden

This seems to be the best hotel in Alexandria. I never go 5* on my own because I think a clean place with functioning shower and toilet and a good breakfast is all what I require because I do not visit places to enjoy excessively the hotel facilites but to experience all what is on outside of it. And if I am sent on a business trip to a five stars hotel I never could find the time to enjoy all the hotel's facilities as they would merit it (or what was paid for).

Unique Quality: The setting of the hotel is magnificent. It is in the spacious Montaza garden which is surrounding the Royal Summer Palace (and for non-hotel-guests only accessible for quite a high entrance fee). It is also at the beach but that does not mean more than just the scenery because the water is exactly as dirty as you can expect it among the suburbs of a 5 millions third world city.

When you are looking a bit more closely to the details for example in the rooms you can easily spot a lot of indicators of a not so perfect maintenance as you would expect for 5*.

taxi driver in Alexandria

by gatekeeperdi

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone knows of a reliable taxi driver in Alexandria that I can contact to arrange to hire for a couple of days while we`re in there in April?

I know that there are plenty of taxis and that the hotel can probably sort it out for us, but if anyone has used someone there and knows how to contact them I`d be really grateful to you if you can send me there info.

Thanks,
Di
