Decayed Charm on the Corniche
It is a little run down, a little grubby....sort of like Alexandria, but I would never stay anywhere else. You can walk to th catacombs, the museums, and all the sites. The metro is about 2 streets away, the train station maybe 6 streets, and the Corniche is across the street. The food is good, the service excellent, and the location can not be beat. Top it off, if you are a World War II history buff, the Allied command was stationed there
Unique Quality: You are walking distance from everything in Alex. The elevator, although touchy, is a great antique

Sofitel Hotel
One of the oldest ones. It is located in the heart of Alexandria close to most commercial areas.

A heritage hotel
A step back to 1902 when the hotel was founded. This is an old fashioned building with big rooms with high ceilings. On arrival you are offered a drink of kerkadeh while you wait to be signed in.
The lift area is a museum piece, all wrought iron. and the lift itself is of wood.
Service is good. The staff are friendly, though not very informative about places to go.
The breakfast buffet has something to please everyone from cereal, yoghurt, cold meat and cheese, ful, eggs, sausages, crepes. There is a wide choice of bread - croissants and petit pain are especially are excellent; and there is even rice pudding and um ali!
I recommend it.
Unique Quality: Atmosphere.Atmosphere.
The entrance has a sitting area which overlooks a main road where you can watch the world go by- and have a coffee while doing it.
If your room faces the bay [10$ extra] , you have a wonderful view, and nice sunsets. But if there is a storm, shutters can bang and the wind may even force the windows open if you haven't latched them properly.
The evening meal , if you want to have it in the hotel, is good and the atmosphere romantic by candlelight. They advertise European artists to sing, but because we had our grand-daughter with us, ate too early for the performance.

A bit of Old England
It was shabby elegance.
The service was annoying as the staff were offering their services all the time.
Unique Quality: The food was quite good, but nothing was outstanding.
The best thing was the grilled chicken at the coffee shop.

Living in the past
This is an old fashioned building with a history. The rooms were fine. The catering good. But I was put off by the fawning obsequiousness of the staff. Every few minutes they were offering their services, and expecting remuneration. If they were paid better it would still be the same as they believe that this is what the customer wants. Well, we don't, my husband and I. A small extra charge on the bill could cover tips if that is the problem . It spoiled my appreciation of the good points, unfortunately.
Unique Quality: The sea facing windows have a great view of Alexandria Bay. The old building with high ceilings is attractive.
Their breakfasts are very good.

A Cheap Stay in Alex (Egypt)
For the budget traveller, Egypt is an obvious destination, and every city has its fair share of inexpensive hotels. Of all the places I've stayed in Alex, the Hotel Leroy stands out as a unique & bizarre experience. Nestled on the top floors of an older office building, the rickety elevator releases the guest into a world reminiscent of the Titanic. The hotel is comprised of ballrooms and grand staircases and has a dining room that overlooks the city. A tuxedoed waiter tends to your breakfast needs.
Unique Quality: Great location: across from the Passport Office. The rooms are clean & large but rather dark - but, is still worth a visit. Very friendly staff.
