 | | | | Marriott Cairo Hotel And Casino: Originally, built as a Palace - it truly awes! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Absolutely beautiful! Service impeccable, truly worthy of ther Marriott standards of high expectations. The palace has been a historical palatial site since the 1800's and, it sits on the edge of the Nile and amongst vast, beautiful gardens. The sheer size of this complex is enough to leave you agape with delight! This is before you've even sampled their service.
Anything you wish for, it seems, can all be found within the walls of your castle for the duratino of your stay. From absolutely gorgeous pool, which is surrounded by a multi teered seating/sunning arrangement so that all people wishing to soak up the rays have uninterrupted views of the lagoon like setting of the pool, to the fabulous array of restaurants that surround the gardens. The food is delicious and the ambiance of the restaurants ever changing! There is even a sushi bar and a french bakery which specializes in some of the best chocolate and fresh fruit tarts that we had on our entire trip to Africa! More "Americanized" bistros are situated by the pool, as well as a huge shisha bar at the far end. The rooms are scrumptuous and we were given both a standard room as well as a suite so that we could sample the difference between the two. The standard room was very large, with wonderful bathroom, plasma TV and comfortable linen sheets and fluffy pillows. Best of all was the view which overlooked the gardens and restaurants. The Suite was truly spectacular and palacial! 3 separate rooms including: Living Room/Dining room and kitchen area complete with a dumb waiter and microw wave. Separate HUGE bathroom, in it's own seaparte portion of the apartment. Double glass paned french doors which allowed you into a massive room complete with large walk in, seamless glass shower and a soaking roman tub. Huge separate master bedroom, separate from the rest of the apartment and complete with a balcony view overlooking all of the Nile and Cairo in the distance. The balcony had a 360 degree view of all of Cairo, truly magical! It was not easy to find a single room with bathroom when I arrived in Cairo in the beginning of August. After trying a few places I went to Dahab Hotel, which had singles without bath (the ones with private bath were occupied). Dahab Hotel is on the 7th floor and have rooms arranged around a courtyard area with tables and chairs. This is a good place to meet other travellers and exchange information. The room was small with a bed, a small table and a fan. The shared bathrooms consist of three small toilets, with the showers inside. The price for the room was 20 pounds. There is a kitchen, which can be used if it is open. And in the morning you can (hopefully) buy breakfast. At 7.45 I asked for breakfast and they said in the reception I should wait 15 minutes for the kitchen man. After half an hour I asked again and they said I should wait another 10 minutes. If the kitchen man had not arrived by then he would not come at all – apparently he doesn’t come every day. At 8.40 he came. Breakfast with tea is 3.00 pounds and breakfast with coffee is 3.50 pounds. I had an extra coffee and was then going to pay 6 pounds. I paid with a 10-pound note. The kitchen man went to get change and came back with 3 pounds and a 5-pound note. He wanted to give me only 3 pounds back and I said it was not okay. He muttered, went away and came back with 4 pounds. I only stayed at Dahab Hotel one night, and then I moved to Garden City House Hotel, which I liked much more. Guess Dahab had been fine if it hadn’t been my last week on my trip and that I was going to stay in Cairo for that whole week. | | | | Hotel Luna: In the midst of it all | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Stayed at the Luna for 8 days. Very good value for the price. THe breakfast of three breadloaves, 1 pat butter, 1 jam and a hard boiled egg, plus one tea or bad coffee (did not drink, just looked at) got a bit old after the second day. Room with OK AC, you aint gonna freeze, had a small room in the back, which is probably easier to cool than those that overlook the street and are noisy. Great laundry service, very cheap. Water (1.5 L for 2 P) available. Good shower and scalding hot water. Scary elevator. Great location. I give it four Pyramids.
Single Room with Bath and AC: $ 13.46 per night Free Airport pickup if staying more than 4 nights, but you have to pay for airport parking + of course a tip! They also have opened a hostel section as well, will report on this after my return. | | | | Meridien Pyramids: Wonderful views, convinient for pyramids | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Our initiation to Egypt was the Meridien Pyramids hotel. Having done our research, and based on past recomendations on VT and similar sights, we settled on this hotel. Our initial impression was that of hecticness and frazzled disorganization. This was mainly due to the amount of tourists that frequent this hotel. With several tour buses full of tourist arrivals, several people being checked in and the waiting area practically full, orders were being "barked" at throughout the space. Each tour operator with his/her charges being ushered this way or that, passports being shuffled back and forth, orders of "sign here, fill this, give me that..." for at least an hour of crazy crazy confusion. It would be fair to say that we had just returned from a fabulous 8 days in Kenya where life is at a much quieter pace, however, by any standards, it all seemed very hurried and shuffled - almost like cattle being processed. (In fact, one British couple we met, and belonging to another group, referred to the moment as exactly that!). We needen't have worried, in the end, they had full control of the situation and, as all others throughout the lobby, all at once it seemed, we were ushered by our own bellhop to our respective rooms.
Upon entering the spacious lobby (if you are not arriving in large groups as many seem to do), you're immediately struck by the spaciousness, the luxury and the grandeur of it all. Egypt, as a whole it seems, is into marble, gold, glitz and crystal. If you've ever been in a Las Vegas hotel, you'll have a mental picture of what I'm talking about. At the end of the lobby, there's a quiet little raised bar area where you can sit down to relax and enjoy some coffee or drinks , safely enjoying the confusion that goes on during check in. This leads down to the pool area which is stunning and offers great pyramid views to enjoy while sunbathing, smoking shisha or having a drink. Rooms are very comfortable! Large beds, wonderful bedding, beautiful roomy balconies with pyramid views (if you spring the extra couple bucks for one) and typical ammenities such as Cable TV, A/C, fridge, complementary bottled water (2 per room), etc. The bathrooms are spacious, with huge tubs/shower combinations, toilet and bidets. Towels are large, soft and highly absorbent, something that seems petty but, that I watch for when staying in a hotel. Hate them paper towel thin towels you are sometimes stuck with! If you do get a pyramid view room, try for an upper floor, otherwise, as in the case of a member traveling in our party, a palm tree is liable to obscure the view. This makes for great sunset viewing and early morning views! You can quietly sit on your balcony with a glass of wine in the evening or cup of coffee in the early dawn watching the Giza Plateau! Breakfast was wonderful and provided as part of the rental package. Egg station, cereal station, plenty of fresh fruits, juices as well as Egyptian fare. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here. We'd happily recomend this hotel to future guests/clients. | | | | Mena House Oberoi Cairo: Palatial Oasis Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
From the moment we entered the gilded lobby of the Mena House, we felt like royalty in a truly palatial environment. Unfortunately, our travel agent had booked us into the newer garden wing - if I were staying again I would reserve a room in the original Palace (I mean, why stay in a palace and bunk in the garden!). The restaurants and public areas are in the main located in the palace and are opulent and spectacular. The rooms are comfortable, clean, and welcoming. The staff are nice, if a little officious. On the first morning we were assured at reception that residents didn't need a reservation for dinner in the main restaurant (where there is a floor show each night) - but we were bitterly disappointed that evening to be told that there were no good tables left n the restaurant! I was disappointed in the pool area as all of the pool was deep, there was no shallow end, and thus noplace that you could wallow in the searing heat. Also, because it's located in a garden there are more flies than youmight tolerate.
Wherever you go in the hotel the pyramids are visible in the public areas - both from the windows on the public rooms, and also from the gardens. It was wonderful. | | | | Le Meridien Pyramids: Best Value With Pyramid View | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Great Points . Le Meridien was my choice because of the location just a short walk to the Pyramids. To my expectation is only a 4 star hotel, but has everything under one roof. If you on a low budget, this hotel recommended if you want to have room with a view of Pyramids. Great place to stay, only a short walk to felfela restaurant, VT members often recommend this restaurant. I expected to have a normal room as I didnt want to pay extra for the view of the pyramids in fact I didnt spent much time in the room but sightseeing...
Pool is fantastic, great view of pyramids in the morning. Money changer (if you running of cash), cash machine, souvenir shops (in case you dont have enough of time to buy or no dare to haggle at bazaar, bar with great singers, and great entertainment. They often have wedding reception in hotel especially week days, so if you like to see how the egyptian wedding held, do pop by. Breakfast wasnt to my expectation, however they do serve Falafel (in the morning?) lots of bakery but dont expect bacon.
