In Cairo you can find many hotels of different quality and price. I must admit that I do not prefer hotels located in the Pyramids area because they are far off the centre of Cairo. All you have there are the Pyramids, nothing else.
Starting with Five Stars Hotels:
Marriott Hotel - located in the centre of Cairo, on the island Zamalek, Sarayah al Gezira Street, close to Cairo tower. The hotel's basis was built as a royal residence for the opening of Suez Chanal in 1869. It's very much modified today with modern towers surrounding the old palace of Khedive Ismail. To me it's the best hotel in Cairo.
Le Meridien - downtown Cairo (there is another one in Heliopolis). A beautiful hotel, located at the northern point of Roda Island, right at the banks of the Nile. Great panorama view over the downtown Cairo Nile area.
Nile Hilton - located at Midan (= place) Tahrir, right of the Egyptian Museum. In the very heart of the city, but needs a renovation, very nice inside courtyard with terrasse bar (minimum charge!).
Ramses Hilton - located behind the Egyptian Museum. Everything quite proper but very much unpersonal.
Mena House - located right in front of the Pyramids. It even includes an old palace from the opening of Suez Canal, once built for the French Emperess Eugenie. Hotel is very large with a nice garden area. If you pay a lot of money and stay in the rooms of the old palace it's great. If you pay normal price and stay in long buildings around the garden - don't do it! These rooms are not worth the money, everything is focused on masses.
Moevenpick Pyramids Hotel - if you want to stay near the Pyramids take this one. It's much better than Mena House, with modern and very good Moevenpick management, not more expensive and you can see the Pyramids as well.
Salam Hotel - it's located in Heliopolis, at Gizr as Suweis Street. Heliopolis is a modern part of the city (with 2.5 million inhabitants) with very beautiful areas. The hotel has 19th century flair, it's very calm with a beautiful garden.
There are several Four Stars Hotels, many of them located at Pyramids Street in Giza. I.e. Green Pyramids, they are quite ok, but I would prefer lower or higher category.
Victoria Hotel - is located in the centre of Cairo, close to Esbekiyya place (15 min by foot from Midan Tahrir and the Egyptian Museum). It's proper and good, no luxury but everything you need. Costs about $20-30 per night and rooms (may be a bit more now?!)
Tulip Hotel - located in the very centre at Midan Tala'at Harb, just 5 min from Midan Tahrir. Small and very cheap hotel, still proper, equipment is ok, only few rooms with bathroom included, otherwise bathroom on the floor. Breakfast is poor - Egyptians don't eat a lot in the morning. Price about $10.
