The first impression of this place is how big it is....then it's how crowded it is at all times, even though we were checked in prompty, no one was there to show us the way to our room or did the front desk clerk tell us how to get there. After looking around a pushy bell man insisted in taking our bags, and show us the way to our room. The hotel lobby is just full of people, it seemed that we were in an airport terminal, instead of a 5 star hotel. The hotel is presently being renoviated, and the difference is huge !!!!! the new rooms have just that new beds, new covers, new tv's, new bathrooms...... Everything seemed fine until we found flea's on our bed the second night, we called downstairs and we promptly moved to another room, now in the new room the A/C didn't work, so again ask to be switched, now our 3 rd room, the bathroom looked and smelled like it hadn't been cleaned in a week, finally after another room changed we got an OK room in the old tower which was not renoviated. We were practially taken from one side of the hotel to another. After 3 hours of be bounced around we decided we would leave and go to another hotel, then we realized in all the room changes we were missing 2 pieces of ladies clothing...what a mess....Is this the way a 5 star International Hotel is runned.....at $225 US dollars a night plus 25% tax....no way !!!!!! We left and checked our selves into the Four Seasons at Nile Plaza (please read my other hotel tip)
Would not recommend this place to anyone.......trying to save some $$$$ we ended up paying with our time and comfort. Every hotel has a 25% tax on the total hotel bill....LOOK out for that !!!!! | | | | Marriott Cairo Hotel And Casino: Marriott Cairo (Zamalek island) | Satisfaction: | | | | |
Fantastic 4.5* hotel !! We arrived in Cairo almost midnight and flagged a local taxi down to "Marriott Cairo". First question I got asked by the friendly taxi driver was " which Marriott ? there are 2 of them." So, first point of advice, figure out which Marriott you are staying in. The one I stayed was the Marriott Cairo on the Zamalek Island which is the little island on the River Nile, ideally located in the city center close to the nearby Egytian Museum and Ramses Station. The taxi ride took 30 mins door to door from Cairo International Airport and cost 70 Egyptian pount (LE) (i.e. about 7 sterling pounds or 14 USD), which is quite standard. On arrival, we were greeted by a grand entrance (used to be an palace converted into hotel and refurbished) and buzzling activity at the lobby. I was surprised that the security is pretty tight and every time you enter they will pass your bags under the x-ray machine like they do in the airports (this is same pretty much all across the hotels in cairo). The check in lobby was a little smokey some parts, but there are 2 foreign exchange bureaus and a string of shops on this level. It took a good 10 mins to complete the check in procedures. We had a twin room and each bed was a queen size. very clean and comfy and comes with a Kettle + coffee. The toilet is fantastic and not disappointing. In the morning, we took a morning swim in the pool which is about 20m in length - the "indoor" and the "outdoor" pool is basically connected and comes with a Jacuzzi. Breakfast is buffet style and have a made to order omlettes, pancakes and steaks etc. in addition to the usual american style breakfast. Most impressive thing is to Garden cafe and the outdoor egyptian restaurant, enclosed inside the hotel surrounded by palm trees and next to the pool. It was particularly romantic and they do delicious egyptian food at night (slightly pricier - about 70-100LE per head depending what you eat). Marriott is on the banks of the Nile, so in some of the rooms you get a lovely nile view too.
To give you some idea of distance to tourist attractions, in Cairo always take a taxi !! Its only 5mins on taxi from Marriott to Egyptian museum (just across the bridge to the east of Zamalek). 10 mins on taxi to Ramses station (east of Zamalek) and to Giza Pyramids a 20 mins taxi (southwest of Zamalek). A 5min journey should cost no more than 10-15LE, so feel free to bargain and walk away if disagree. If you choose to, the museum is walkable. Hotel itselt has local tours available for booking if wanted, otherwise just hop on a local taxi ! Will stay there again !
