RIGHT AT THE PYRAMIDS

I really recommend this hotel becasue is right at the pyramids of Gizah, check the picture. This luxury hotel has all the amenities, falilties and services.
Oberoi is an Indian chain it was built originally as a hunting lodge by the King of Egypt.

Unique Quality: The main building is an old palace with the best rooms and views. Then, there is another area crossing a garden (new area very simple) with rooms with view to the pyramids and other views.
For me the best experience is to swimm in the swimmingpool watching the pyramids.
It has different restaurants, not too expensive... a French with life music, an Indian with live Indian music and different restaurants for a quick bite.

Luxoury witha Pyramid view

We'd heard that this was a fabulous hotel and we weren't disappointed.
The location is amazing, a leisurely stroll to the Great Pyramid will take all of 5 or 6 minutes and the view from the gardens, swimming pool and restaurants is wonderful.
It is an expensive place to stay, both in terms of room cost and food/drink prices (particularly by Cairo standards) however the service and ambience makes it worth while.
The rooms in the older part of then hotel are fairly spacious and beautifully decorated in an oriental style, as are most of the public areas. The staff are very friendly and helpful and there is a 24 hour currency exchange facility.
The hotel has a number of restaurants including The Moghul Room, suberb Indian cuisine, the Khan el Khalili Restaurant (a kind of a western style brasserie) and the Oasis BBQ Grill, by the pool, which at night serves Lebanese and Egyptian starters then a mixture of freshly grilled meat and fish dishes. However, though the food was excellent the menus didn't really include a lot of Egyptian cuisine, though you could have fuul beans, falafal and tahini for breakfast
On the negative side the hotel is quite far from the centre of Cairo. Taxis are easy to come by (it cost us between 30 and 45 Egyptian Pounds, about £3.00-£4.50 to travel between the hotel and central Cairo) and the journey took between 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.
Overall though it was a great hotel, very luxourious, a relaxing atmosphere with excellent amenities. If you want to treat yourself I would definately recommend it.

Unique Quality: Lounging in the pool, drinking in the bar, sitting eating breakfast, the view of the Great Pyramid is never far away.
Every night we returned to the room to find a single rose and a quotation of poetry laying on the bed!

The Mena House Oberoi at Gize

Unique Quality: It was the old Hunting Pavillion of King Farouk. It's located exactly in front to the Pyramids plateau, and you have a view to the pyramids from your room. Impeccable service, great restaurants, and a casino (closed during Ramadan)

Mena house oberoi

by henrybassett

we are travelling to Cairo next week and have read some scary reviews about the Mena House Oberoi where we have already booked to stay.
Can anyone confirm the state of the hotel as reports seem to say it is very tatty?
Also any tips on on getting taxis ad hoc on the street, We are quite far from the centre , I think, so will need to get taxis quite a lot, any safety rules or is that not a problem there?
Finally any tips on a good river day cruise? and evening dinner cruise?
Thanks

We stayed at Mena House in 2003, so my info not up to date.

However, we really enjoyed our stay there. Room was in the more modern wing next to garden and Pyramid View from room was stunning. Furnishings and bathroom fittings not very new, but the bed was the largest we've every slept in.

Feel you have to accept with these historic hotels that there may be more emphasis on character than modern convenience, and for us that is a good trade off. The main parts of the building are really interesting and we were lucky in that on the Saturday evening there was a wedding party at the hotel.

The sight of all the guests arriving in their finery, the horsemen carrying flaming torches and general atmosphere was fascinating.

Only stayed 2 nights as then on Nile Cruise, but will be visiting Luxor and Aswan for a week in 2 weeks time and staying at Old Winter Palace in Luxor and Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan, so you will see that we have not been put off staying in heritage hotels. Just enjoy and atmosphere and don't worry too much if things are not the same as in a modern identikit hotel.
