Solo American Woman Traveling

by quinntripper

Hi! I'm traveling to Egypt for vacation and will be in Cairo the first week of January. Can anybody recommend a place to hang out where I can meet other people--fellow travelers or locals that won't get the "wrong idea?" Thank you for your help!

Thanks for your reply. I'm not looking for a tour as I have all of those covered. I'm looking for more of a local restaurant/lounge type of place tht's conducive to meeting other people, is "Western" freindly and respectful of solo women, or a place where vacationers/ex pats hang out. Appreciate your suggestion though!

Many Westerners live in the Zamalek & Maadi , particularly Degla parts of Cairo so if you try to be close to these arears you are likely to meet many .. You will also meet many expats and fellow travellers in coffee shops & restaurants of the five star hotels around the nile & the city centre so if you target these arears hopefully you will never feel alone and will also get some good advice etc.. all the best

Many coffee shops and such in the area of Garden City behind the American Embassy and the American University on Tahrir Square. For sure you will find people there to come in touch with and who can take you around.

Good luck, Dora.

Travel Tips for Cairo

Disappearing Main Tourist Office

by ZannaClair

As of the 1st of April 2007 we have discovered that there is no longer an open and running main tourist information office in Cairo. If you need any advice, ideally you would ask the tourist information place at the Airport. The tourist info at Ramses Train Station is not overly useful, limited english skills and doesn't even understand the word "goddess".

Walk Around!

by aeroarce

This is the Capital of Africa and Middle east, here you can find the only airport that has a Vip private parking area for the best jets you can imagine and donkeys in the streets taking all kind of supplies. The ancient egypt is kept in its musseums and in the Pyramids and also you have the best Metro System of all Africa. The most impressive is that a part of the city chaos it is possible to relax and enjoy silence besides all the crowd at some of the most impressive mosques of Muslim World: Ibn Tulum and Al Azahar. The 4 days I stayed there walking and walking. From Tahrir to the Citadel, Khan aljalil, Al ghouri, the City of the deaths, old cairo and new cairo,...
Just walk and enjoy local life and way of living. I adore that man at the entrance of his decrepit shop, maybe he has no clients for his old and dump stuff but he's still there looking the time passing by.

Hubble Bubble

by kenmerk

When in Cairo, it is worth while to try the hubble bubble in one of the many cafes around town...

The cafes appear to be the main social scene in the Egyptian capital... And actually the pipe is not bad... Mild, aromic kind of taste...

The cafe shown here is down on the edge of the Khan al-Khalili market...

Cheops Pyramid: Not much is...

by AndreasK

Cheops Pyramid: Not much is known about Khufu (or Cheops, as the Greeks called him). The tomb had been robbed long before it was discovered by archeologists. He is thought to have been the ruler of a highly structured society and he must have been very wealthy. At Giza the pyramids reached its climax and the standard features of the Old Kingdom pyramid complex. Yet after five and a half centuries this flourishing civilization collapsed, plunging Egypt into disorder.
