From Cairo airport to alex
by theknight
Hi there
I have been making the trip between cairo airport and Alex about three times/year for a couple of years now, flying in via KLM & arriving in the early hours of the morning. In the airport, just after you leave the customs area, you will find desks for three or four limo companies. You will not be able to miss them, even if you wanted to, as some of them will approach you and ask if you wanted a taxi. They will tell you that they have fixed prices but still, don't be afraid to haggle. They will probably charge you something bettween LE 500 - LE 800 , for a nice clean & A/C car, although will try to charge you more. If you get out of that area you can pick an ordinary Taxi (black & white cabs). These will charge you less (although the quality of cars is less) & you should aim for LE 250 - LE 300 but do haggle hard and make sure that you both have agreed on a price and that no misunderstanding is possible. If you are happy with the driver take his mobile number and use him for your return trip .. telling him that will also make him "nicer" to you even if you change your mind later on. For your return, you can either use the superjet or one of these drivers. There are also cab companies in Alex which you can phone a couple of days in advance & arrange .. Again, this should not cost you more that LE 300.. Enjoy your trip anyway !

by njay22
FYI> I paid USD90 for a basic tour package incl:
(1) train to Cairo->Aswan->Luxor->Cairo (I had free option of Aswan -> Luxor by BASIC feluca)
(2) 2-start accom
(3) transfers and transport to all the tourist sites incl basic guide
(3) 5 days I think (incl 1 free day in Aswan and Luxor).
I made it a 3-day trip and went to Sharm-el-sheikh as well.
The bus was about 55 egyptian pounds (I think).
Cairo is rather boring - the pyramids are not that great. Luxor, Aswa, Red Sea are AWESOME. Red Sea, Luxor, Aswan
The Coptic Christian religion in Egypt
by Diana75
The remaining almost 10% of the population are Christians belonging to the Coptic Orthodox Church, most of them being located in the upper Egypt around Cairo and Alexandria.
According to the estimations the numbers of Egyptian Copts is from 3 million to 7 million.
Egypt was Christianized during the first century AD, when the country was part of the Roman Empire, by St Mark.
The head of the Coptic Christian it is called pope and is traditionally based in Alexandria. The current Pope is Shenudah III.
The Copts can be recognized from the cross tattoo on their hand.
An island in the Nile!
by marimar_72
One of my favorite sections of Cairo is Zamalek, an island in the Nile that basically lies between modern downtown Cairo and Giza. It is an upscale, garden area with a number of attractions as well as many embassies, schools popular hotels.
Zamalek,is an inner city upper class neighborhood, the Bermuda Triangle of the city's pleasure-seekers - a place where one can become blissfully lost wandering between the restaurants, bars and pubs. I took this picture from the airplane! though it was a little foggy but still you can see the zamalek island!
How to get along in Cairo
by Bryskiboy
If you smile and remember to be polite then the world of Cairo will open up to you. Do not talk for the sake of talking, be comfortable to just sit and relax, enjoying the views. Cairoans prefer quieter people to one who babble non-stop. By all means ask about things, that's fine as long as it's relevant.
SMILE, SAY THANKYOU. Be appreciative of the Cairoan generosity. The people are extremely polite and friendly and hospitable. Don't ever worry about this, but you may be expeted to buy something in the end, not always, but it's fun doing it and you meet real people.
