Great location

This hotel is located in a prime location just outside the gates to the Pyramids of Giza. It also commands a clear view of the pyramids from its roof top.

Bland!

Had to stay out in GIza for three nights. I prefered the coonvenience and quaintness of my £ 70 room in Talaat Harb to this corporate monster. The rooms are huge and there is a very nice pool and health club area. Massages cost 100 £.

The food was mediocre (as in most hotels in Egypt). The buffet (now synonymous with travel in Egypt) was the usual bland fare. Occassionaly an Egyptian dish was available.

Hotel staff were very courteous.

Cost about 35 to 40 £ to get a taxi to take you into Cairo at night. Travel time 30 minutes plus, the return trip was more difficult as many drivers don't know Giza that well.

Very big, noble hotel near the pyramids. Well, the hotel is absolutely great. I admit that it is rather expensiv, but worth every penny. Pool, big rooms, a bank and three restaurants in the hotel itself will make your stay very, very good. By the way, from the terrace, you can see the pyramids. Isn't that great ?

Close to the Pyramids

by solopes about Sofitel Le Sphinx Cairo

A five stars hotel that deserves its classification. It's located at walking distance to the Pyramids, and it's a good solution if you are, like us, in a full time program, with transport everytime and everywhere. Its location, out of town, would bring the problem of what to do after seing the pyramids and sphinx.

Taxis, of course would answer, but a hotel inside town would do it better. Swimming in the pool with the pyramids watching you is... something!

Very Nice hotels

I just visited Egypt during April,2008 and my comments are as follows:

First of all you don't need hotels at Luxor or Aswan if you plan to visit Hurgada, another relaxing place on the Red Sea.The Nile cruise would have the accomodation for you.I guess your program is perfect. The commodities are expensive for foreigners (almost double). Always carry enough mineral water bottles with you as they are too expensive.

You need to include Suez canal and Ismalia while in Cairo and Colossi of Memnon on the West Bank of Luxor.

Our tenth day in Egypt - we are on our way to hotel Sofitel Sphinx, Cairo - the last leg of our journey. SS again is a first class hotel, maynotbe as beautiful as the last one, but offers all essential amenities upto standard and satisfactory to travellers like me who are equally,if not more, interested in the world outside as well! This hotel is situated in Giza which is not too close to/from downtown Cairo for the liking of some, but only steps away from the Pyramids! The view of the Pyramids from some of the rooms! Lovely Reception and Pool area. Recommended restaurant within closest proximity (7-10 minutes' walk ) is 'Felfela'.

Very Poor Service

by TripAdvisor Member docboy

I had recently booked a holiday through expedia, for a trip to Egypt. I had booked both flight and hotel accommodation through their website. We got back to the UK on the 26th evening.

I was happy with the flight both ways but as for the hotel accommodation; it was a rude shock to my wife and me when we got to our destination.
We booked to stay at the Sofitel Le Sphinx 5 star Hotel at Giza, Egypt. After having been through a long trip, we found the main entrance been re-decorated and had to navigate our way to get through a narrow hall to reach the main lobby. The front reception desk was far from what we expected of a 5 star hotel. The staffs were not very helpful.

Even before we checked in, there was every one from the porters to the concierge staff trying to sell us day trips to here, there and everywhere.

Egypt was so hot and the hotel did not help us in the least. The air conditioning was out of order.
We first checked into one room, which was not clean, the air conditioning was not working, the furniture was in a poor condition, and so we requested another room, which was no better. All along this process, we were constantly hassled regarding arranging Nile cruise and day trips to the Pyramids and elsewhere, even though our accommodation was not still sorted.
What upset us most was the fact that after having reached there following a long and tiring trip, we just were not left in peace. The rooms offered were in a poor condition and the staff did nothing to make our lives better and they did not seem to understand that we were so tired and wanted some peace and quiet.
This is not what we expected of a 5 star hotel and the reviews that we read on the Expedia site were far from the reality.
We do understand that star ratings mean different things in different countries, but this was totally wrong.
We then moved to the LeMeridien hotel within an hour or so, which thankfully was adjacent to this hotel, and I had to pay for our accommodation all over again.

To have to start our holiday in this manner was very upsetting and more so in a place we have not been before was quite intimidating.

OK stay

We stayed here as part of an independent package with Gate 1. The staff were friendly, though we checked in at 1am and they weren't really "with it". They gave us our keys and walked away without telling us how to get to the room.
The room was okay, sheets were a little rough and there was no clock in the room which was a little annoying. My main issue was the bathroom which had a moldy ceiling.
I liked the location, near the pyramids and closer to Alexandria, but you could not leave the hotel and walk around, which was a bummer.
The food was good, but breakfast service was somewhat lacking as we had to wait until the end of breakfast to get coffee or tea.
The other problem is that the hotel is under construction, which isn't a problem in itself, but the construction completely covers the sign so our taxi driver drove way past it before realizing we had passed it. But our taxi driver was also an idiot, so others may not have this problem.
The pool was a scene! I didn't even use it because there were too many people in it.
Overall - would probably not recommend it to fellow travelers, but for the package price we paid it was well worth it.

Sofitel Le Sphinx: Close to metro/underground?

by Alexa33

Does anybody know the above hotel and can me tell me whether it is close to a metro/underground station (Giza station might be close)?

RE: RE: Sofitel Le Sphinx: Close to metro/underground?

I was there about a month ago. It is not close to the Cairo Metro and is quite a ways out of the way (30-40 minute cab drive to the city center). It's attraction is that it is right next to the pyramids. The good news is that with some negotiating cabs are relatively cheap in Egypt.

Muby, the word "close" also means "near".

Hi Muby, so if you live next to it, can you tell me if there's an underground station next to this hotel (in walking distance)?
Thanks,
A.
