Try the "Karvin" hotel. Its pretty central in Heliopolis, not far from McDonalds on Mirghany Street. Tel:6906453. Its owned by one of the Oberoi extended family and has an exellent indian restaurant as well as a bar downstairs and a very pleasant roof bar/restaurant. Very reasonable rates.
I have no connection, apart from having dined there a few times.

Female alone in Cairo- safe hostel/guest house?

by racayadi

Suggestions on safe/comfortable places to stay in Cairo are more than welcomed.... plan to be there March 5-8...

* also, traveling by bus to Nuweiba to take hydrofoil to Eilat - suggestions/timing?

Thanks.

Karvin Hotel in Heliopolis, Cairo. New small and very well run 3 star hotel.

There is no hydrofoil service to Eilat from Nuweiba... just cross the border from Taba. Buses leave three times daily from the East Delta Bus Stations of Abbaseya and Al Mazhar costing LE 60 per person ( for foreigners ).

Can recommend Longchamps hotel in Zamalek, see
www.hotellongchamps.com

It's run by an Egyptian lady who has lived in Europe for long time.
Not the cheapest accomodation in Cairo, but perfect for a woman alone, has about 30 rooms, and is located in a slightly upscale and not so noisy area with nice restaurants and good shopping around.
Zamalek is very close to downtown, so Taxi to Midan Tahrir/Egyptian museum takes 5-10 minutes and costs LE 5-10.

garden city house hotel. you'll probably need to ask your cab driver to take you to the back of the semiramsis intercontintal cos it's not known by everyone! it's a quiet hotel frequented by many old people but has a common room and a TV and the staff speak perfect english. 55 egyptian pounds a night, breakfast included.
