Ghinda pension: a good and cheap pension in asmara

by travut55

it is verry clean, the people are very friendly and is located in downtown. A single room is 130 Nfk. the most of the other pensions are dirty and brothels.

ASMARA

In Asmara, we spent most of our time in the lovely Africa Pension, a villa set in a pretty garden 5 minutes from Harnet Avenue (the main drag). Rooms are large, bright and clean, with comfortable beds. Bathrooms are shared but clean, and the staff are very friendly and obliging. Be sure to book in advance, as we found it full on one occasion. On that night, we looked at the Bristol Pension, which seemed a bit dingy, and the Sheghay Hotel, which seemed overpriced with small rooms and showers that only supplied water several hours after a request was made, before settling on the Khartoum Hotel, which was very centrally located and quite comfortable, though the atmosphere was less friendly than the Africa Pension. The bathrooms are shared but the showers were the best we found in Eritrea. Other tourists we met were staying at the Concorde Pension which they seemed very satisfied with. If you're looking for upmarket grandeur, the Albergo Italia is nicely located and suitable plush. The Intercontinental has opened again under a new name, but is a few kilometres from town, out near the airport.

MASSAWA
In Massawa we stayed at the Red Sea Hotel. This felt overpriced, had no atmosphere (a bit like a Travelodge), had cold showers only, and was quite a trek from Massawa's restaurants and shops (25 minute walk). On the plus side, it was perfectly pleasant, but somewhere nearer the port would be more convenient. The Dahlak Hotel is still being refurbished but will probably end up being the best option. Nothing seems to happen on Taulud Island, so being in a good position to spend the evening on Massawa Island is a good idea.

KEREN
In Keren we stayed at the Albergo Sicilia which was in a great location set around a courtyard, and had a large selection of rooms of varying prices. We opted for the most expensive (still extremely good value compared to Asmara) with double bed with mosquito net (not very comfortable, but acceptable), chairs and tables, and private bathroom. Though the hot water was very sporadic it was lovely to have a private bathroom. Again, this hotel was clean and though the receptionists did not speak much English, they were friendly. The courtyard could be quite loud at times, so in retrospect taking a room around the far corner of the courtyard might have been nice.

FILFIL
There's a hotel 7km from Filfil itself (Mendip Hotel) but if you can afford the taxi it's probably better as a day trip, or a stop en route between Massawa and Asmara (though Mendip Hotel is a good stop for lunch).

Avoid the Ambassador

by Traveller_GT

No service, laundry was never done, the lift never worked, some staff were OK, but the managers did not care about anything.

Good location, but that is all this has going for it.

Africa Pension: A good inexpensive pension

by Traveller_GT

This is a good low cost pension. The woman running the pension is very nice. Recommended.

Africa Pension: Best place in Asmara

by mdeligt

This is a nice place in wonderful Asmara. It's a neo classical Italian villa with a pleasant garden. I recommend this place to the few visiting Eritrea. It's next to the Italian embassadors home, in a quiet neighbourhood.

Friendly staff, a 'family' atmosphere, close to Liberation Ave, the center of town. Tv and drinks in the lounge.

Excellent value!

by hunwagner

Hotels and pensions in Eritrea are often in beautiful, old colonial buildings. Most of them are very clean and well-kept, yet very cheap.
Even in Asmara, you can get a clean, large room for 2-3 USD!
Out in the country towns, the variety diminishes, but the prices and the cleanliness seems to remain the same everywhere - except Massawa.

Luul Hotel: On the Dahlak Islands

by Saagar

This is (was?) the only hotel on theDahlak Islands. I did not stay overnight, but took shelter for the worst heat of the day and had a good hot lunch meal and drinks.
Nice hotel on a desert island. Even if there had been more choices I would have gone for this, still... Suited me perfectly.

Located on the shores of the western main bay of Dahlak Kebir facing the mainland, it is a great starting point for boat trips, desert hikes, fishing, snorkelling trips, you name it. The hotel will priovide equipment. The shores here near the hotel are rough and rocky and the lagoon-like inlet is tepid and not so attractive. But by help of a small boat it takes no time to find great places for fishing, snorkelling etc.

- - - -: In Barentu the hotel was bombed

by Saagar

I stayed in Barentu just before the Ethiopians bombed the main hotel there, and sad story is, the hotel owner with it. It was a white, gleaming building with some style and a big courtyard. I hope it is being rebuilt. If not, accommodation is available in the centre of the town, just below, on the north side of the government hill. There are some restaurants there, good ones, too, and some double as hotels.

Dahlak Hotel: In Massawa, the Dahlak Hotel

by Saagar

I spent two nights in the Dahlak Hotel on Taulud Island (in the city). I found it comfortable, clean and nice and the staff very knowledgeable and helpful.

Good connections to any other service including boat trips to Dahlak island.
Good and varied breakfast.
