 | | | | Taitu Hotel | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Officially "Itegue Taitu Hotel", this is the oldest still functioning hotel in Ethiopia. When Empress Taitu founded it in 1914, there was not such concept as TOURISM here in Ethiopia. If you dared to travel around you should trust in locals hospitality, the same way that locals had been doing for ages. No Inns, no hostals were known here when the Empress decided to introduce a touch of "modern life" in this newborn (in a way) country.
That would be a reason enough to visit it, but it's also a good mid-range hotel, one of the few reliable ones in the Piazza area. A bit abandoned and overpriced (it survives definetly on its fame) it is a good option for a night or 2. In fact it's often full and reservation is adviced. It has several buildings, being the original house (see pics) the best option if you are looking for a medium range option. If you have to take a room in any of the new buildings (I had) expect very very basic rooms with/without WC. Better without by the way, as I didn't dare to enter the toilets in my room. Rooms go from 46 to 150 Birr (5-15 USD) depending on the range and on your bargaining skills. There is a 24 hours guard in the main gate. It is well known, so people can tell you where it is.Directions: It is located in a very busy street at night, with bars and discos. BTW, the other "local" hotels in that street are brothels, so they are not a good alternative when Taitu is full. The only good option at walking distance is Baro and Wutma.

I stayed at this hotel on my last days here, after returning from the tour. I was heading for a cheaper one, but they were all full, so had to take this "expensive" middle range hotel (135 Birr, 14 USD). It was a good choice after all, as I was tired and could at least rest. It is located in an area of Ministries, so it's very quiet at night. It has a nice courtyard which is like an oasis and the rooms, though small, are clean and comfortable. Hot water doesn´t always run and when it does don't expect strong pressure. There is a restaurant, small, where breakfast (included) is served. You can have simple meals here too.
The old lady in charge was very kinf and kept my lugagge for free when I was 2 days out in Harar. When I was it had a tin wall in front, due to restoration.

In spite of its name this seems to be a good choice for a middle range hotel. It is not in an excellent location; in between Piazza and Mercato but too far to go walking to nearly anywhere. I didn't stay, just passed by on my way to Mercato, but looked like a decent option, african way of course. Rooms for about 20USD. This is a medium range good hotel, one of the most visited by groups. It is greatly located in Churchill, the main avenue, near the National Theatre and the Post Office. Didn't sleep here but had dinner at its nice terrace overlooking the busy Churchill Avenue on a delicious evening. Used to eat injhera for more than a week, the dinner of grilled fish with salad and 1 huge mango juices (about 2 USD) tastes like heaven to me. The rest of the tables of the terrace are full of modern businessmen and trendy highclassed young people.
