Extreme Hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • In spite of its name this seems to be a good choice for a middle range hotel. It is not in an excellent location; in between Piazza and Mercato but too far to go walking to nearly anywhere.
I didn't stay, just passed by on my way to Mercato, but looked like a decent option, african way of course.
    Rooms for about 20USD.

TAITU HOTEL: THEY THREW ME OUT! AND NO HOT WATER
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:

  • Let’s get this over with quickly. This is the oldest hotel in Addis Ababa. It was commissioned to be built by Empress Taitu in 1898. It had no hot water then, and it still doesn’t! Some of it has not been painted, decorated or repaired since then either. The staff hassle you 24/7 to buy a tour yet they ignore you and literally sit down and watch the TV in the middle of the restaurant. Your pleas to get food or drink are never heard over the TV. When they decide to grace you with their presence they are arrogant as hell. Yes, the only rude people in all of Ethiopia work her in this government owned hell hole. Yes, they are government employees. Now you understand. Make a reservation? Get thrown out just like I did when they had a large party. I booked a week and got one night. So, I paid top money for only cold water and got thrown out? YES.

Please do not stay here on principal! They may throw you out with no notice just like me. And it smells.

Throwing solo guests out if a larger party shows up unexpectedly. Homeless in Addis!

    Baro Hotel: Traveler's Favorite!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • It's a budget accommodation popular with backpackers and it seemed that they also do rent out rooms by the hour too... for couples needing a convenient place for a quickie!

Rooms are small and very basic, but you get what you pay for at ETB 60 a night.

Sheets are clean and towels and condoms provided for your convenience too. Heh.

It can get pretty nippy at night, even under the sheets, so extra clothes might help.

Staff are very friendly and generally very helpful.

Free left luggage available at reception.

    Pleasant courtyard.

Walking distance to many bars, restaurants and Churchill Road.

Out of this world, this hotel is like an island in the see of miserable huts around. I just saw it from the distance, with my TShirt and jeans I wouldn't have probably been admited in, and anyway I still had some other more interesting visits to make that last day.
    Maybe next time...

The service was pretty good really - the staff were friendly enough and helpful to the degree of which they could understand english - most didnt but they were smiling and friendly anyway - and gave us wake up calls to be helpful even when we didnt want them and didnt want to be woken up so early nor receive about 3 wake up calls each!

Pretty flowers and gardens around the front entrance. Interesting pictures decorated the walls - particularly of a religious nature but quite culturally Ethiopian.

The breakfast was awful! but very nice tea which is a good thing when you want to start the day!? After having fantastic food and coffee in Burundi we were let down badly but we had probably just got spoilt from being too well looked after!?

And the beds were fantastic! Interesting that the leader of our group actually said that most of the members of our group commented to him about the particularly comfortable beds! (our beds in Burundi for the previoius week were not so good!)

A plus for me too was that the hotel was not too close to the airport so driving back for our midday flight we got to see lots of people on the roadsides at the shops or on the way to wherever they were going that morning! so lots of photo opportunities of people.

And a sunrise view from our balcony though mostly our view was over industrial or ramshackle surroundings!

    National Hotel: Soviet-style accommodation!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • This has to be one of the worst hotels i've ever stayed in.

Arriving at 4:45am from a red-eye flight from Cairo, i was looking forward to check-in, have a nice warm bath and sleep till lunch.

Initially, the receptionist insisted on charging me for the previous night. It's either that or i have to wait 1hr 15mins till 6am to avoid paying that previous night where i'll only be spending 1hr 15mins in my room.

I didn't want to have to pay another USD35 for just that!

After more than 20mins, she relented, called her manager and gave me my keys.

I spent only a night there.

Had lunch in the hotel restaurant. Spaghetti carbonara... HORRIBLE STUFF. Dry and rubbery and almost tasteless! I had to request for tomato sauce to make it more edible!

Bath water was FREEZING! Heater didn't work.

Most of the lights in my room didn't work either.

    TV didn't work.

Lift could only fit 1 person comfortably. It was a little cramped with my backpack and daypack! And the lift wasn't working at its best!

Don't stay here if you can help it.

Stayed here might first night in Addis. After midnight sometime the water and power went off.
Had to catch a flight at 05:00 and it was a blast dressing and packing up my bag by camera light. The rooms are simple and clean. Considering it's right in the heart of Piazza it's a good value and had I not been spooked by getting bit on the shoulder by something that night I probably would have stayed here for all of my days in Addis.

There is a great cafe on the ground floor as well as Nina's internet in the back which makes the place a winner

    Ras Hotel: On Churchill Avenue
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Ras Hotel has a central location on Church Hill Avenue. The restaurant is ok, with a selection of local and tourist food. The service is sometimes slow, but the staff is friendly. There is a patio bar, where you can sit outside and people watch. The room was clean, but the standard is not very high. Sometimes there are hot water in the shower, sometimes not.

    Nice patio bar.

    ENTOTO HOTEL: BUDGET ROMANCE
  • Tip Rating:

  • The Entoto Hotel is romantic according to the nice Ethiopian man (Mesfin) who parks my car at the airport in England. I stopped here on a very rainy day and had a nice lunch. It is set in a garden area of its own and is in the quietest area in Addis Ababa. It is located in the relatively up-scale area of Siddist Kilo between Addis Ababa University and the American Embassy on the road (up) to the Entoto mountains. I did not see the rooms, but would guess a room goes for $30-40 a night. They also had a large conference/banquet facility and a recreational centre next door. If you want a bit of piece and quite in a nice setting at an economical price, but still only a short shared taxi ride to everything – here you are.

Ring for a reservation. They are friendly and speak English.

Gedera Nr. 3: Cheap & really cheerful
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The menu was a little restricted, but it was all wholesome. If you find the breakfast a little boring, go into one of the supermarkets for bacon or marmite. The kitchen will cook the bacon for you.

The hotel is in need of a good makeover to renovate the tired paint and wallpaper, but the staff are friendly and willing, which is better than fresh paint when you are tired and hot.

There are weddings at the weekends, but they are not too noisy and close up early, so that everyone can come back for the wedding breakfast the next day. The finery and the pageant makes up for any minor inconvenience.

I stayed there a month. As I was working in my room most of the time, I got a larger room with a bath for $32 per night. the normal size rooms have a shower and a fridge and cost $16 per night, including breakfast. Really good value.
