    Bring your wallet

    by

While I didn't stay here, I called in to view the grounds and hotel.

Impressive place, with bars, restaurants, a pool and even a nightclub. This place would be classed as a luxury in any city. You need a large wallet to stay here. The Villa suite will set you back over £4000 a night.

You can pay to use the gym, pool etc, though not sure how much this is. You can also use the cash advance system with Visa if you can't find the 2 or 3 working ATM machines in the country.

The sad thing is that from the luxury of the towers here, you can overlook some of the poorest shanty areas of Addis. Talk about extremes.

    Sheraton Addis

    by

Set in mountainous countryside, 7,800 feet above sea level, the Sheraton Addis is located less than a mile from the National Palace and National Museum. The hotel is near the capital's main attractions, including the Merkato, one of the largest open-air markets in Africa. Hotel amenities include the Aqva Club, a recreational facility with outdoor swimming pools (with underwater music), sauna, massage treatments, and Jacuzzi. The hotel also offers airport transfers, computer rentals, door...

7 star luxury with views of Addis' slums!

    by

The Sheraton Addis is part of the brand's "Luxury Collection." In my opinion, it's a typical top-end, brand-name hotel; apart from being gigantic, it's not terribly unique. I stayed there for several days while attending a meeting, and never had the opportunity to leave the compound because of my schedule. I may as well have been sequestered anywhere in the world.

    More polished than the Hilton

    by

I did not stay here and will only stay at places like this for work but if you can afford it and want to remain in the isolated tourist bubble this is the place. It is more polished than the government run Hilton behind it and you pay accordingly.

Unique Quality: I was here to get cash.
It has an ATM in the lobby that takes Western cards (Plus symbol).
If you enter from the front walk past the checkin desk on the left and it's off to the right hand side of the checkin desk if I recall correctly?

    TOO EXPENSIVE !

    by

The 2 best hotels in Addis are the Hilton and the Sheraton. If you have plenty of money, I would recommend staying at the Hilton. Why? Because it ahs a lot more character. It’s older, but has a lot going for it. Nice gardens, large open balconies, shopping, travel agents (Including Ethiopian and Kenya Airlines Offices), a permanent Coffee Ceremony in the lobby and a lot more. You can dine in 4 restaurants, 1 bar and get room service of course. Money exchange, parcel shipping, an ATM attached to world-wide networks and souvenirs can all easily to hand in the massive lobby area.

    Unique Quality:

Your dining and drinking options are:

    Baywatch
Located on an island between the swimming pools. Bar snacks, ice cream and a full bar.

    Breezes
The grill restaurant located poolside. Barbeque dishes including rotisserie chicken. Also ‘make your own pizza’ baked in a wood fired oven.

    Fountain Court
Located in the lobby. High teas, light snacks and a musical fountain (don’t ask).

    Gaslight Night Club
Snacks and lots of over priced alcohol.

    Les Arcades
French restaurant. You have to dress up and a gold credit card is the minimum requirements. Don’t expect big portions.

    Shaheen
    Indian restaurant.

    Stagioni
    Gourmet Italian Restaurant.

    Stanley's Bar
Dark wood panelling and leather furniture. Snacks and really over-priced cocktails.

    Summerfields
Middle Eastern restaurant with à la carte dining and buffet options.

    The Office Bar
Located in the large gardens. Bar snacks in a very nice location.

Out of this world, this hotel is like an island in the see of miserable huts around. I just saw it from the distance, with my TShirt and jeans I wouldn't have probably been admited in, and anyway I still had some other more interesting visits to make that last day.
    Maybe next time...

The most un-Ethiopian place in Ethiopia

    by

Unique Quality: This five-star hotel is the first hotel on the African continent to join the 'Luxury Collection' - an elite group of hotels that are internationally recognised as being among the world's finest and most exclusive.

The Sheraton Addis may just be outside your accomodation budget, but visiting it is quite an experience. After you have passed the security check, you enter a world very unlike the rest of Addis or indeed unlike the rest of Ethiopia.
The inside is pure luxury; marble, expensive works of art for decoration, everything shiny and spotlessly clean.
The outside is like paradise: fountains, beautiful, exotic flowers, plants and trees, a large swimming pool, separate playground for the youngest visitors, and Breezes, the poolside restaurant. (click on the name for more info)

Walking around on the hotel site, you imagine yourself anywhere but in the poorest country in the world. Walls have even been put up and exoticly decorated/painted to keep you from seeing 'the real world' outside...

The Sheraton Addis is owned by Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi, the richest man in Ethiopia. He was born in this country from an Ethiopian mother and a Yemeni father.

After my short visit to Lagos, this hotel was like an oasis in the desert! Excellent food, super tidy, wonderful staff but what really impressed me, was the sound system in my room. The TV is connected to the bathroom, meaning that you hear CNN in the bath tub and on top of that: there is even a phone next to the loo! What do you need more?

Okay so this place is ultra luxury, said to have been built because the UN sec gen of the time didn't want to go to Addis because there were no decent hotels... is this a myth? I don't know but the hotel is a reality, but only to those who can afford it.

Latest single room rate offered (on 4 Nov '05) US$215 per room incl. 25% tax and b/fast. This is US$12 cheaper than what the Hilton offered.

Check-out time is 13h00. If you want to keep the room till 18h00 they charge 50% of the rate and 10% for every hour thereafter.

Airport transfers on the hotel shuttle bus are free. I booked with Salamawi, she was helpful and friendly.

Addis Ababa: Doings in January 2011?

by NedHopkins

Several Addis Ababa hotels -- including Harmony and Sheraton -- report "no rooms available" in most of January 2011. Does anyone know if some big event is scheduled for that month?

Thanks for your answer, habeshawi.

The hotels -- several of them -- are booked even for the last ten days of January, well past both Christmas and Timkat.

I will be showing up in Addis on or about the 5th of Jan. Will I have trouble finding a budget hotel during this time? Would Harar be an O.K. place for these holidays?
