This medium range hotel is located just by the Africa Hotel, in the same main avenue, and is a good choice if the Africa is full. It is roughly the same quality and type of rooms but slightly more expensive, about 70B (7 USD). I stayed in Africa hotel which is not really centrally located. I'd say it's half way between city bus station and the centre of town (the main stelae field is about 10min walk away). The price was good - 50 birr/night in a double (single was not available, otherwise the price for a double is about 70b). The room was clean and had an attached shower&toilet and a TV included (Ethiopian TV, BBC World and CNN). Friendly staff, manager speaks good English. The hotel has a restaurant serving a few meals (I was there during fasting time, so no meat or even milk on menu), pretty edible for a fair price (10 birr . During lunch time it's possible to pay some 10 birr and serve yourself with different meals and unrestricted quantities in a buffet-style room.
Good thing is that even people who do not speak English know exactly where the hotel is - really useful when talking to bus/minibus/taxi drivers. Also, self-appointed guides /mostly local boys about 18-22 yrs old with basic English/ seem to like the place (since the tourists use to flock there too, of course) so if you need somebody to guide you in town or outside (Lioness of Gobedra, temple of Yeha...), just ask the manager. Warning! Do not stay at Africa Hotel! I traveled with an Ethiopian friend, and the hotel owner is a total scam artist and cheat! We stayed there just because Lonely Planet says that they will pick you up from the airport for free...but believe me, the owner/manager guy just adds it into the bill of the room! We changed to the Abinet Hotel, which was 10 birr cheaper...and a whole lot CLEANER, NICE, centrally located, and the people were more helpful. Don't be fooled by the Africa Hotel guy's "nice" demeanor...he is a total scam artist. He kept doing a "bait and switch" technique...another friend and I were trying to go the Danakil Depression, and the manager said we could talk to some tourists who were coming back that night...later that evening, he puts us into a room with this seedy driver guy who wants to charge $1000 (USD, not birr) for just the 4WD. Bait and switch. We got the hell out of there. Also, there was NO hot water in the private bed/bath single I stayed in. I really think there are better, cleaner, nicer budget options in Axum. Do not trust the owner/manager of the Africa Hotel.
