Africa Hotel: Africa Hotel, Axum, Ethiopia

The double room with shower/toilet costs now (03/2009) Birr 90.-. What do you get? Two beds, and free fleas. The toilets are smelling, the watere pipes are leaking, our shower had no warm water. One window was broken - and you don't have moskitonets.
You get a free transfer from the airport to the hotel - but for the transport back to the airport you have to pay extra.
And there is a restaurant. Nice if you want to start fasting - if you want to eat you look better for other places.

Yeha hotel: Yeha hotel

Overpriced but excellent location on small hill just next to the stele field and the St. Mary church. On the other hand - too far from main street of town.

Exodus Hotel: Probably one of the best place in town

Haven't stay there but I have seen the room and they look really good, clean and spacious enough.
The staff of this place is helpful and everything look up and running.
Some rooms are occupied by UN staff.
The price is between 80 and 120 Birrs/night

Nice room and decent bathroom and toilet.
Excellent restaurant
Parking
Good price

Africa Hotel: An ok place in Axum

Stayed there for 2 nights in Jan 08.

The hotel is ok and there are many rooms displayed around a square compound. Pls note that this place is popular with tour group especially overland tourist and the hotel can be full for several days.

The rooms are ok with a decent bathroom but nothing extra as usual.

Pls note that during my stay and even if it was dry season, I had some mosquitoes in the room and other travellers had this unenjoyable company too !

I guess I paid smth like 80 birr per night.

Decent restaurant

Africa Hotel: Africa Hotel in Axum, Ethiopia

Warning! Do not stay at Africa Hotel! I traveled with an Ethiopian friend, and the hotel owner is a total scam artist and cheat! We stayed there just because Lonely Planet says that they will pick you up from the airport for free...but believe me, the owner/manager guy just adds it into the bill of the room! We changed to the Abinet Hotel, which was 10 birr cheaper...and a whole lot CLEANER, NICE, centrally located, and the people were more helpful. Don't be fooled by the Africa Hotel guy's "nice" demeanor...he is a total scam artist. He kept doing a "bait and switch" technique...another friend and I were trying to go the Danakil Depression, and the manager said we could talk to some tourists who were coming back that night...later that evening, he puts us into a room with this seedy driver guy who wants to charge $1000 (USD, not birr) for just the 4WD. Bait and switch. We got the hell out of there. Also, there was NO hot water in the private bed/bath single I stayed in. I really think there are better, cleaner, nicer budget options in Axum. Do not trust the owner/manager of the Africa Hotel.

Room was dirty. No hot water. Seedy, scam artist manager/owner.

ETHIOPIS HOTEL

This is one of several budget hotels right on the main street. It looked freshly painted and cheap. If you have the time you can walk along and see the rooms and negotiate a price. Definitely less than $10 for the cheapest rooms.

AFRICA HOTEL

The Africa hotel is a very good budget hotel option. They have a few rooms with their own toilet for less than $6 and with shared showers/toilets for less than that. Its right on the main road and just a long walk to all the historical sites. Don’t expect much – you didn’t pay much. Clean and functional is what you get here.

Cheap and well located.

REMHAI HOTEL: LUXURY? NO.

Yes they have a swimming pool. The rooms are the biggest problem. Cramped, dingy and often do not even have windows. Nice restaurant and great bar. You could stay at any other hotel in town and be within walking distance if you just want to go for a swim. There is a small fee payable even for guests. I got in for free because the attendant wasn't watching. They do have safe parking and excellent staff. Their exchange rates are worse than the banks and for some currencies, like UK Pounds, its very poor. Definitely come over for dinner when they have live music, it’s a cultural treat.

The Ark Hotel

This medium range hotel is located just by the Africa Hotel, in the same main avenue, and is a good choice if the Africa is full. It is roughly the same quality and type of rooms but slightly more expensive, about 70B (7 USD).

The Africa Hotel (2)

For the second night I changed to a "with bathroom" room, which meant better cleaner room built on a new pavillion around the inner patio. This costed 50B (5USD) instead of 30, but I was more than satisfied to have this brand new room for just 2 dollars difference. If you can choose take the "with bathroom " choice from the beginning.
