The Africa Hotel
This is one of the best choices for budget accomodation. It is a local hotel with a nice patio, restaurant and independent travel agency.
I arrived late (19:00h) from Shire (on the way from Gonder), and when I checked in there were only "rooms without WC" which means "simpler and cheaper" rooms. I had to take this for the first night. It was cheap (30B, 3 USD) but too "basic", just a little room with a bed and a chair. The common shower was "too basic" too, to say it politely and the WC was just a hole in the ground, but for the first night it was OK.

Africa Hotel: Waiting for stolen obelisk
I stayed in Africa hotel which is not really centrally located. I'd say it's half way between city bus station and the centre of town (the main stelae field is about 10min walk away).
The price was good - 50 birr/night in a double (single was not available, otherwise the price for a double is about 70b). The room was clean and had an attached shower&toilet and a TV included (Ethiopian TV, BBC World and CNN).
Friendly staff, manager speaks good English. The hotel has a restaurant serving a few meals (I was there during fasting time, so no meat or even milk on menu), pretty edible for a fair price (10 birr . During lunch time it's possible to pay some 10 birr and serve yourself with different meals and unrestricted quantities in a buffet-style room.
Good thing is that even people who do not speak English know exactly where the hotel is - really useful when talking to bus/minibus/taxi drivers.
Also, self-appointed guides /mostly local boys about 18-22 yrs old with basic English/ seem to like the place (since the tourists use to flock there too, of course) so if you need somebody to guide you in town or outside (Lioness of Gobedra, temple of Yeha...), just ask the manager.

Africa Hotel: Pretty Good Place
Friendly , clean place, with a restaurant and internet service.
Singles with out bath 25 Birr
Doubles s/c 75 Birr
Africa Hotel also offers an cheap laundry service, a bar with Sat-Tv, Guides and tour operators.
Be careful when using the stairways: The 13th stair is higher than the others! Nearly everybody is stumbling there!
