Simien lodge: only luxus lodge in Simien mountains

beautiufl view to Simien mountains...good chances for easy walks and start for long hiking
easy to find Gelada mountians nearby

Unique Quality: Trekking in the Simien mountains has been the main activity for a long time. Once up on the escarpment, it is possible to walk through forests and over grassland for hundreds of miles. A trek to the summit of Ras Daschen normally takes about 6 days. Other more modest treks go to Imet Gogo, Bwahit and the camp sites of Geech, Sankabur and Chennuk

Lodge du Chateau: Comfortable, with great service

The 14 rooms of the Lodge du Chateau are set on both sides of an attractive garden courtyard. Those rooms are basic: no air conditioning (not needed) and no fan or heating (both of which would have been appreciated). Hot water is supplied by a heater next to the shower in each room; it must be turned on 30 to 45 minutes before it's needed. The beds are comfortable.

Meals are taken in a dining room that sits above the kitchen and is reached by outdoor steps. Room service is available, though I don't know why anyone would want it. (Instant coffee was poured from a thermos bottle; "cream" was powdered.)

Unique Quality: Seymoun, the owner-manager, is especially helpful. When I realized I had to cut my stay short, he tried to find a car and driver to get me back to Addis Ababa earlier than the next day's plane would. Failing that, he called Ethiopian Airlines and changed my reservation. That was fortunate, as the one plane that day was entirely full.

None of this, however, came cheap. Seymoun charged me US$150 for the room (for all three nights I'd reserved, though I stayed only one) plus $50 for my half-day guide, another $50 for his services, and $20 for the van that took me back to the airport (the taxi on the way in was $10). In short, US$270 for my 28-hour stay.

MISRAK PENSION

This is a basic hotel, clean without any luxuries. It is a little bit far from the city centre but I was happy not to sleep in the city crowds and breath some fresh air. Rooms are around a courtyard with some trees and have their own tiny bathroom with hot water all the time! No reception desk, the owner is just around to show you the rooms and give keys and towels. In low season you can even discuss the price. A very basic option without breakfast but also a good deal.

I payed for a double room 150Birr

Circle Hotel: Good but noisey

Right in the centre of Gondor. 150 Birr per night for twin room.

Clean (ish) and warm (ish) shower.

Very cheap and tasty cafe on the roof, and a great TV lounge on floor 2 (with movies and Sky Sports).

All seemed well.

Then at bedtime, we realised that a nightclub with the loudest music EVER was next door. This went quiet about 3am.
Then at 5.30am, banging, shouting, every noise you can think of.

Cheap but you will not get any sleep (A theme you will become familiar with in Ethiopia)

Unique Quality: The electrics. Bare wires galore!!

Not in the books

Think this palce might be the Belegez Pension..ask fellow VT'er Gamon since he brought be here. It's a nice little place not far from the castles. It had an enclosed courtyard to park your car or 4WD as a British couple on their great African road trip did the night I was there. The staff was great..lent me an adaptor to charge the camera battery.

Unique Quality: This was a quiet but watch the bathroom windows. This was one of the few places I got bit by mosquitos in.

Belegez Pension: Bare Bones but Adequate Accomodation in Gondar

I spent three nights here. It's not bad, and my view might be even a bit more positive had I not been recovering from a bad chest cold. The hotel is built around a courtyard, which is clean and attractive. Like many African hotels, it's walled off from the street by a metal gate and a staff member is always on duty, so security is good. My room was small and very basic, with the usual semi-exposed wiring here and there, but the bed was comfortable. Everything worked in the bath, and the shower was warm, but each use of the shower led to water flowing over into the room, requiring a mop up operation. A stream of European tourists passed through, so I had some chances for shared meals and conversation. Staff were extremely helpful and cordial. You can't beat the price $10 per night.

Unique Quality: Pleasant courtyard

AMBARAS HOTEL

This is another low budget option which is a very short walk to the Royal Enclosure. I only glanced inside the enclosure, but is was clean looking and secure. I found it listed on a French website as being priced well under $10. There are a lot of these budget places within 3 city blocks of the Royal Enclosure and each other. Gonder is not a big place. If you are on a tight budget, I would suggest haggling the price as there are always more rooms in these budget places than guests.
