Bole Ambassador Hotel: Convenient to the Airport

by NedHopkins

The main attraction of the Bole Ambassador Hotel is its location, a mere two- to five minute drive from the airport. In addition, its suites are spacious; it offers wifi throughout its buildings; its restaurant, including its complementary breakfast, is decent; and its rates are well below comparable Addis Ababa lodgings.

The staff is friendly and helpful, providing me with an AC adapter the moment I asked for one. The hotel has a gym and a spa, though I didn't try either of them.

Upon arriving at Bole International, I was met at the hotel's kiosk in the airport and promptly taken to the hotel. The van also delivered me back to the airport on my departure.

Given that flights leave for Gonder, Lalibela, and Axum early in the morning, the hotel's location is a real plus for people flying to any of those historically and culturally interesting cities.

OUTSIDE THE WALLS: HERITAGE PLAZA - HARAR

by DAO

Heritage Plaza is a little hit and miss in terms of a hotel and its location. It is not inside the city walls and is slightly more expensive than some that are either in the wall or near them. With a local Bajaj (motorcycle taxi with cover eating area) you can be anywhere in the city for less than 50 US cents – if they come by. Otherwise it’s a 10-15 minute walk to where they are and/or the outer walls. It’s ok. The bed was – yes – ok. The room size was good and the hotel is quiet enough. The room I had did have was cool, clean and not much else. The bathroom was, however, a nightmare. The shower tray was tiny, clogged with hair and the water poured all over the bathroom and into the bedroom. A lot and every time. I had to ‘steal’ some towels to try and not break my neck walking around in my own room after a shower. The TV played 1 channel. There were 2 good closets and that would be it for the room.

The desk was manned and that is all I ever saw of the staff. Supposedly they had a restaurant, but I was never there hen they might have been so can’t comments.

Breakfast was outside in a nice outdoor area, but poor. I went next door to ‘Stackbucks’ for a poor, but better breakfast. Yes it is a Starbucks rip-off.

I really can’t recommend this place that much. It did the job, but was expensive for this city and what you get.

Lonely Planet calls this hotel “Palatial”.

Only if you are smoking strong drugs.

Harar is not blessed with any real ‘hotels’ so try and stay in a guesthouse or cultural house. Cheaper and probably have better showers.

WUTMA HOTEL: CHEAP & CHEERFUL - ADDIS ABABA

by DAO

What Hotel? Every time I went through Passport Control at the airport they would ask me this. The Wutma is a cheap and cheerful hotel in the Piazza area. It’s cheaper than its famous near-neighbour the Itegue Taitu Hotel. It also has hot water! Again, an advance on that other hotel. Staff are helpful, the restaurant looks 5 times nicer than the hotel itself and they have their own internet centre. Security? At night they have a steel door and the night watchman sleeps on the ground behind it. No issues with safety. It is a short walk to the Piazza and the mini bus station. My room was small, but clean and comfortable. They even provide flip flops so you don’t slip in the shower. For less than $10 a night, you can’t beat it!

* Good restaurant with super cheap prices
* Safe
* Good value
* Internet (use the one at the back, not the one facing the street)
* Good location
* Reasonable and cheap restaurant
* Cold and cheap beer
* Friendly staff

EXTREME HOTEL: CLEAN AND EFFICIENT - ADDIS ABABA

by DAO

The only thing extreme about this hotel is how bright it is. I was impressed with this hotel when I went for a visit. The staff were friendly and happily showed me 2 rooms. They had a large bed, shower, closet and TV. They were also incredibly bright like they had just been painted. Bizarrely the rooms looked identical to me, but one was $30 a night and one was $40. Why the difference? I have no idea.

On the plus side it is set off the road and behind walls and tall tress making it quiet. It is within walking distance of the Mercato and an uphill walk from Piazza. Also breakfast is included and the dinning room (pictured) looked nice.

On the bad side, you have to walk through ‘Beggar Ally’ to get to Piazza. They don’t bother tourists much though.

You could do a lot worse than here. In its price range, it’s good.

:UPDATE. Since my visit, VT Member Flynboxes stayed here. Please read his review:

ETHIOPIS HOTEL - AXUM

by DAO

This is one of several budget hotels right on the main street. It looked freshly painted and cheap. If you have the time you can walk along and see the rooms and negotiate a price. Definitely less than $10 for the cheapest rooms.

AFRICA HOTEL - AXUM

by DAO

The Africa hotel is a very good budget hotel option. They have a few rooms with their own toilet for less than $6 and with shared showers/toilets for less than that. Its right on the main road and just a long walk to all the historical sites. Don’t expect much – you didn’t pay much. Clean and functional is what you get here.

Cheap and well located.

REMHAI HOTEL - AXUM: LUXURY? NO.

by DAO

Yes they have a swimming pool. The rooms are the biggest problem. Cramped, dingy and often do not even have windows. Nice restaurant and great bar. You could stay at any other hotel in town and be within walking distance if you just want to go for a swim. There is a small fee payable even for guests. I got in for free because the attendant wasn't watching. They do have safe parking and excellent staff. Their exchange rates are worse than the banks and for some currencies, like UK Pounds, its very poor.

Definitely come over for dinner when they have live music, it’s a cultural treat. This is held in a large venue towards the rear of the property.

Jupiter Hotel - Cazanchise: Jupiter Hotel - Bringing Guests home

by GourmeTraveller

A great hotel to unwind after a long and tedious trip, the second you enter the hotels reception you already know you are in very capable hands. Efficient and great staff from the guard on the outside, the ever friendly porter to the professional and experienced management team will ensure that your stay is nothing but what you’re would expect from sheer luxury. A very service orientated establishment where all guests are treated to unparallel attention and great hospitality. Every room is well appointed and every care is ensured. Without a doubt a great hotel to spend a few days or a few months as I have. A hotel where staff genuinely cares about your individual comfort and well being.

The hotel boasts a newly equipped gym, steam and sauna with great views of the city center and the ever beautiful mountain range. The meals prepared at this hotels restaurant is par excellence, every meal prepared by the highly experienced chef is a masterpiece on its own. No meal will ever disappoint and the chef with his over 30 years experience will ensure nothing but his absolute personal culinary experience preparing each dish ensuring great dining moments.

Theodoros Hotel, Harar --the worst hotel ....

by elsadran

Theodoros Hotel was the worst hotel in my life. The room was awfully dirty, the bedsheets were not washed, and the bathroom were full of the previous guests “leftovers”... The water cuts were a norm and when I complained the receptionist threw me out of the reception and went on sleeping... Even though it was a festivity day this condition is unacceptable for 100 b. a room...

Ras Hotel - Harar

by elsadran

I found this hotel very warm and pleasant although others think the corridor with the room doors and the rooms themselves resemble a Russian prison... Me, maybe because of the polite, efficient and helpful staff or maybe because I had a good time, I found the rooms cozy and comfortable. The rooms on the back side are much better because they are sunny and quiet. They cost only 70b and they have private bathroom with hot water, which follows a time schedule as in many hotels in the country.
It is outside the old city near the traffic lights - the only ones in Harar...
The restaurant has good food, very good service, and a very pleasant terrace that looks on the green garden, for a breezy meal.
