Summerland Hotel & Restaurant - Bahir Dar

by elsadran

I didn't stay there but I am just mentioning the prices here because the hotel is good but not for my pocket... Singles are 316b doubles 455b and twins 480 ( with two beds).

I just visited the restaurant a couple of times. Prices in the restaurant of Summerland are : meat dishes 40-48, fish cost about 40 and appetisers 25b, which is expensive but the food and the service are very good. You will also pay a tax of 26% as it always happens in good hotels.

Tsehay Hotel, Bahir Dar

by elsadran

The rooms are pleasant with TV, comfortable beds, mosquito nets, private bathrooms, hot water and are daily cleaned. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There is Internet service if you have your laptop with you.
The location is very central, just one street away from the lake.
Double rooms cost 120b and singles 90b. For rooms with common bathroom prices drop to 80b/100b.
Just across the street there is a similar hotel but less pleasant, Tadesse Hotel, (tel 0582-665020).
At the cafe in the corner there is excellent macchiato coffee! Only 3 birrs.
Tsehay hotel is a good solution if Ghion Hotel at the lake shore is full, and Summerland is too expensive for you.

Simien Park Hotel, Debark

by elsadran

There are better hotels than this in dusty Debark but we were too tired to look for them when we got off the bus, and too lazy to move later. Anyway it is not bad. The rooms are bright and clean, there is hot water - when there is water... too many water cuts - and they cost 70b for a single and 180b for a double.
Be careful when you leave the room as there are too many thieves around!!! During the night thieves come and try your door; if you have left it unlocked they get in like cats and your belongings become theirs... They came to our door at least twice every night, but I sleep like a rabbit and I woke up but didn't have the time to catch them because they fled like rabbits, too!
In Giant Labelir Hotel, another big hotel in Debark, rooms cost 200b. It seems a good option.

Wanza Hotel, Addis Ababa

by elsadran

It is a quiet , cheap and convenient small hotel, 10 meters from Africa Avenue (Bole Road). I liked my room because it was sunny for long hours it was clean and had hot water, but I had to live with cockroaches, small ones fortunately. The staff are very discreet and quiet. In brief, it was a nice place, close to shops, Internet cafes, and transportation. For me the strongest point was that it was near the Greek restaurant!
It is on Democratic Republic Congo street, the vertical street to Africa Avenue, (Bole road), that starts near Dembel City.

Edsonatra Hotel, Addis Ababa

by elsadran

We had to stay in this hotel for the first few days, until we realised we spent too much money for what we got. There is a lot of noise from the nearby bar and restaurant, Rodeo – which, by the way is one of my favourites – the staff is rude, and disorganised and they often lie just to get your money.
Some of the rooms are good, with comfortable beds and satellite TV and a balcony, but they are overpriced. They cost 400-600bir for a double including breakfast, which breakfast can be from quite good to absolutely terrible!
It is close to the airport, in a small street, parallel and very near to Bole Street ( also called Africa Avenue) across Shoa Shopping Center, behind the govermental buildings.
I think the best thing about it was that we had no worries about drinking too much in Rodeo!..ha..ha

Taitu Hotel, Piazza, Addis Ababa

by elsadran

There are so many tips about it that I will only mention the little creatures crawling up the wall and the awful beds in the extremely small rooms. There was hot water all the time but I think this is not enough for the money you pay.
This is the oldest hotel in Addis, 104 years old but it has no atmosphere and the staff is lazy and indifferent.
Prices are 72-108b for rooms with common shower, 240,250,300b with pivate bathroom, 360b for a family of four.
They keep your luggage for 3-7birrs per day ( in nearby hotels it's free)
I don't recommend it!

Baro Hotel, Addis Ababa

by elsadran

There are a lot of tips about Baro so one more is not too much.... We had changed a lot of hotels before we ended up in Baro.
The rooms in the building on the left, no101- 106 are spacious and airy with bathrooms and good hot showers, although they are a little cold and humid. Prices are from 95 to 120birr.
But what attracted us most to this hotel is the friendly and relaxing atmosphere, the helpful staff and the beautiful leafy courtyard that gives you the feeling you are at home. In the evening guests gathered in the small terrace where we had the chance to feel really close.
It is located in Piazza, a central location with a Dashen Bank, restaurants and good transportation. Only sometimes there is noise in the night. Use your earplugs if you have a problem. The price is very good for Addis and you can use it as a base for your exploration of the country because they can keep your big luggage for free.
The rooms inside the main building are often used by the hour but I was never bothered as the couples are really decent.

Union Hotel Apartment: The Best Hotel in Addis Ababa

by saraiffic

The Union Hotel was great. My room was clean and comfortable. I had hot water everytime I took a shower. Laundry service was fast and inexpensive. The hotel dining room was a bit slow, but the food was always fresh and tasted great. There is a workout room just off the lobby, and there is a computer with internet connection in the lobby.

Above all - the people working at the Union Hotel made the experience wonderful. The front desk staff were always very friendly. The workers in the dining hall were always helpful and eager to please.

Jupiter Hotel: Avoid the Jupiter if you want to sleep

by zuhur

This is a new hotel; our international hosts provided a modest allowance insufficient to cover cost of the Hilton or Sheraton. Don't stay here. I kept debating every night whether I should move over to the Hilton as I could not sleep, it was hot and stuffy with no air con. If you open the windows (which you must) the mosquitos rush in. They have no fans. The first room I was in was tiny. Rooms and common areas are so dimly lit it is hard to see. Worst of all, there are no mattresses. Or they are calling the bed frame a bed. Hard as a rock. The hotel manager saw I intended to sleep on a couch in the lobby, and switched my room. They put a blanket over the bed frame, however that did not turn it into a mattress. OK, it was larger, but also hot, noisy, full of mosquitos and with the same hard bed. The bathrooms stink -- a bad toilet smell. The food is also indifferent. Not a four star as they claim.
I heard after I left there was a pool on the roof - no indication. Also the phones don't work in the room, no one answers at the desk, and there is an internet area, but extremely slow, and hard to download files.

Amazingly noisy at night and without air con you have to open the windows, put in your earplugs and prepare for no sleep.
