Meet Me There: Swimming in Phosphorescence
I turned up by accident on a tro-tro, and liked the place so much I stayed on an extra day, an extra day, an extra day, under the spell of the sensuous. They were new at the time, so I said I'd write them up a piece to help out with visitors. Please read below;
'Meet Me There' is unique in that it is close enough to the village to introduce you to the welcoming, smiling faces of the coastal Volta Region of Ghana, yet far enough outside the village to immerse you wholly in a world of crashing sea waves, towering coconut trees, hot sun, and cool, bright starlight. Locality is important: Nearly all the staff come from the surrounding villages, and the rooms of the Home-Lodge are built in the traditional way, with sun baked mud and straw roofs. But don’t think for a second that comfort is compromised. Quite the contrary; All rooms are equipped with ceiling fans, white sheets and double mattresses, and decorated with African arts and crafts in a way that gives an extra richness to the red walls. The double rooms are 20 Cedis a night, and there is also a children's room with bunkbeds. For those independent adventurers looking to spend less, tents are provided with sheet and mattress for 5 Cedis a night, or its 3 cedi’s if you put up your own. If you are hoping to just kick back, the restaurant cooks up some delicious seafood, and the bar serves cold beers, all of which can be enjoyed by the side of the lagoon, a natural pool that glows with phosphorescence when you swim at night. But you might well find yourself getting involved in the community; There is a tailor in the village who can make batik shirts, a medicine woman who is always happy to meet strangers, and fishermen that come with nets to the beach every morning. There are boat trips to where the river meets the sea, a leatherback turtle protection project, and drum and dance lessons in the Ewe style. For such a little place there’s a lot to do. Be sure you give some time for the projects, the people, and the place, and even then, you might find yourself wanting to stay, just an extra day.
