Coconut Grove Beach Resort - El Mina: An Ocean Lover's Paradise!
My son and I were in heaven here! I love the "sea", as commonly referred too by Ghanaian residents.
The resort is built right along the coast of Elmina and you can literally walk out of your room and onto the sand. The staff were great, and the locals were very helpful.
I got up every morning at daybreak, and walked the beach for atleast 3 miles. At bout 5:30 am, each morning, the fisherman convene on the beach to secure the catch of the day. It's a very beautiful event.
This beach resort offers great views, a clean swimming pool, a conference facility, and is within a short distance of the historical slave DUNGEONS (incorrectly referred to as castles).
Also, there is a restaurant at the resort that offers great local food. You may opt to have the daily buffet, or you may order from the menu.

Royal Basin Resort: Quaint may be a good description...
I stayed at this hotel, after my experience at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, so my expectations at this point were very high!! This hotel is definitely NOT La Palm, but it was nice.
The rooms are air conditioned, but pretty small. The bathroom had running water, a toilet, and shower. In some of the rooms, I was told, there are bathtubs. However, I didn't get that lucky on my last visit.
The hotel has a small jazz bar - with live music in the evenings, a swimming pool (that didn't look too clean so we didn't swim), and a small restaurant.

La Palm Royal Beach Hotel: Ghana's Best
I had a wonderful stay here. I was traveling with my 3 year old son, and he loved this hotel as well. He had a great time hanging out at the swimming pool.
The service at the hotel was absolutely magnificent, and the staff were extremely polite.
I met many other world traveler's in the beautiful lobby of the hotel, and engaged in some very dynamic converstions.
In addition, the daily buffets were good too. The cost for the buffet is approximately $12.00 per meal.

Nkrumah Memorial Hotel and others: Hotels in Accra
The three budgethotels downtown, I know myself are the Nkrumah Memorial Hotel at the Kojo Thompson road, and further north
California hotel (with a nice porch) and opposite the Crown Prince Hotel (not very good). If one has no rooms left, you can easily go to one of the others.
On the walls of the restaurant of Nkrumah Memorial Hotel are funny wallpaintings of Nkrumah and Rawlings.
In December 2003, I didn't see these hotels anymore from the minibus. People in the bus told me, that the California Hotel still exist, but moved to another place.

Lemon Lodge Hotel: Friendly Accra Hotel
Lemon Lodge is a very simple African-style hotel. There's no breakfast. The beds are a little lumpy. Showers, as often as not, are from a bucket as the whole area suffers from chronically low water pressure and water cuts (as well as powercuts). But it's also a wonderful place to meet people, whether it be other travellers from the west or Africa, or the staff themselves, who are unfailingly friendly and good-humoured despite their long hours and almost non-existent wages.

Alisa Hotel: Medium-class hotels
Alisa is very nice - pleasant rooms in little bungalows, family-run, lovely staff, nice swimming pool with bar, what more do you want!
The tilapia in the hotel restaurant is great, served with Banku or Kenkey. But the best thing about the place is just how nice the staff are - so friendly and professional!

I stayed in the North Ridge Hotel in North Ridge and I quite liked it. It's a business hotel and therefore a little bit expensive (40$) but it's very central and they have a little Swimming pool to cool down in the afternoon ;-) Frankie's Hotel in OSU seems to be ok too (same price range)

Great place to stay, reasonable prices (can be negotiated in advance), and air-conditioned is El-Elyon in Osu, a suburb of Accra.
Very friendly and courteous staff. Several international restuarants (Italian, Chinese, Indian) within walking distance. Also a great disco/bar just down the street.

Civilization at last! Coconut...
Civilization at last! Coconut Beach Resort. After a few days of no or little electricity and cold showers, the hot one I just had was paradise. We are staying at the Coconut Beach Resort. My every beckoning need is attended to by one of the wait staff. Intricately tilled floors, every door hand carved, all of the furniture hand made, and all of this just a few yard off of the gently, rolling, ocean. Access to this resort is often provided by sea on pleasure cruise ships. There is, what appears to the ameture, to be a road we used to get there, but discovered on the route it was probably just a naturally occurring void of vegetation that spiraled over every pothole in Ghana before ending at the parking lot. The sunset was the most magnificent I had ever seen. As I walked along the beach this afternoon a young man came by selling a giant shell he had found. We relished our little detour into civilization, and decided to wait until tomorrow to see the old slave fort-castle. It is only a fifteen minutes drive away. I can see it as I look out my window, but after such a ride we're not too interested in going anywhere. We'll drive there in the morning. It is a welcome respite.
