BOB'S BUNKHOUSE: CHEAP AND EASY IN JOHANNESBURG
  • Tip Rating:

  • By DAO on June 22, 2008
  • Instead of Bob’s Bunkhouse, they should just call it Bob’s House. Bob and his wife made me feel really at home and I highly recommend them. If you are visiting Johannesburg and you don’t have the time or worried about crime – stay here. They are close to the airport and they are a pleasant walk into Edenvale. All the shopping, food and drink you can want are very close by. I even found 2 quality butchers so I could have a Braai. Everything is clean and modern and the pool is really refreshing on a hot day. You can cook, drink, eat and just hang out under the huge covered porch. A real home away from home. I stayed with these nice people twice and really enjoyed the town.

    Facilities include:

    Car Parking Available
    Laundry
    Airport Pick Up
    Linen Included
    Bar
    Towels
    Luggage Storage
    Swimming Pool
    Telephone/Fax Facilities

FATIMAS NEST: BEER & BRAAI ON TOP OF THE BEACH (MOZAMBIQUE)
  • Tip Rating:
  • DAO
  • Updated By DAO on June 22, 2008

  • Fatimas Nest is run by the same nice people who run Fatimas Backpackers in Maputo. It is a nice compound of mixed building that has a commanding view of the whole beach. You can have a great sleep in one of their hammocks overlooking the ocean, sit in their nice outside bar or go for a stroll day or night along the beach. They have accommodation options for everyone: Pre-erected Maru-tents, Private Bungalows, Bungalows dorms built on the sand dunes, and a fully equipped campsite with a lapa and a braai area. All their accommodation options come with mosquito nets. They also have a good restaurant or shared cooking and refrigerator facilities. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

  • Rivendell is a very pretty bed & breakfast hidden away behind high gates in the leafy neighbourhood housing various embassies. The rooms are resplendent with new furniture, tasteful dιcor, comfortable beds and large sliding glass doors to let in the sunlight. You also have a nice swimming pool, sun lounges and tables right at your doorstep. This is a great place to stay. The gardens and patios are well maintained, they have a tasteful communal lounge area where you can relax and watch satellite TV. They also have very safe off-road parking, secure storage for luggage, laundry service, Internet access & phone. The rooms are non-smoking. All in all – a very good night’s sleep!

VICTORIA FALLS BACKPACKERS - ZIMBABWE: ONE OF THE BEST BACKPACKERS IN THE WORLD
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • DAO
  • By DAO on March 8, 2008

  • This is how a 'BACKPACKERS' should be. They say on their website they offer a "A Safari Lodge atmosphere and facility at Backpacker prices". They do. I stayed in nice room with a wall safe & mosquito net in the pleasant garden courtyard near the pool. The kitchen is open air as is the TV room/lounge. They make a fire every night and will help you set up the fantastic BBQ they have for a braai. You can sit and sun yourself, or have a walk into town and see the falls. The staff can also arrange money conversion at a good rate, tours, flights, whatever you want. They even offer discounts if you buy more than one adrenaline activity (i.e. Bungee Jumping the falls). Free and secure car parking is right at the front and they even washed my car. While so many people go and stay in Livingston in cramped conditions 16 km from the falls – you could be here enjoying quiet luxury at a hostel price. Meals? Cook your own or ask the staff to make you a meal. It’s all flexible and inviting. A must stay.

    • Swimming pool open all the time
    • Braai every night

We were allowed to set up our tents there.
We had a fire-pit! There was a kitchen up in back of us. We had the dinning area right next to us. There are some full size tents there. For visitors and students. I prefer the:
IGLOO-TENT!!!! The bones in front of my tent!
ELEPHANT JAW & RHINO JAW BONE!
They are there for learning. For the school kids. I like having these kinds of things next to my tent. To keep that
    AFRICA FEEL GOING!!!!!
    GALLA CAMP, KENYA 10/2001

From what I can see nice TENTS! A nice big
shower!! There is some ELEPHANT DUNG around! SO, at times they do take a walk up!
They didn't while I was there!

    Private House on the beach-St.
    Louis-Senegal
    by johnsakura
This house is from a very well known Senegalese artist that makes his living in Paris. Its his brother who takes care of the very nice confortable house and rents it to foreigners. Its not a legal business what he does, but I think you wouldnt mind to have such a great place. If anyone asks you anything, you're friends of his brother or somthing. Although I remebered he was in legal action about changing the house to a real Guesthouse.

This is a 2 flight house, good patio, nice and big rooms, well furnished and very good upper bath room and shower. As the house is actually on the beach you can go out and walk a couple of metres and you are on the ocean waves bathing yourselfe. You can use the kitchen hise living room for sme music and TV etc.
You can contact Mokhtar if you wish to rnt his place. The price for each person for one night i think is something between 7euros to 10euros. maybe you can get it low until 5 maybe? hehe

TEMBO HOUSE HOTEL: LUXURY IN ZANZIBAR
  • Tip Rating:
  • DAO
  • By DAO on May 26, 2008

  • The Tembo House Hotel is a real ‘WOW’. It has an understated front that opens into a dramatic courtyard that has a fantastic swimming pool surrounded by the inner balconies of the spectacular rooms. Go past this to sit on the terrace and have a cold drink or a great meal as you take in the sights of the ocean and nearby islands.

The hotel is an old building that housed the American Consulate in 1834. In 1884 it become the premises of Cowasjee Dinshaw & Partners who managed trading companies in the western Indian Ocean. Their name is still on the main entrance of the hotel.

    Facilities
    • Fantastic swimming pool in the courtyard
    • Own beach in front of the terrace restaurant and bar
    • Bahari Restaurant (local and international cuisine)
    • Internet Cafι
    • Laundry

    Rooms
    • Most with balconies overlooking the ocean or swimming pool
    • Air-conditioning
    • Refrigerator
    • Telephone
    • Satellite TV
    • Mosquito netting/fans
    • Large Zanzibarian beds

Even if you do not stay here, come for a meal on the terrace. The food is fantastic and you can enjoy authentic African dishes with a gentle breeze and a fantastic view. The swimming pool is the best of the few in Stone Town. Go for a dip! Changing rooms and toilets are pool side

ARNE'S HORSE SAFARI: PEACEFUL PARADISE - BOTSWANA
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • DAO
  • Updated By DAO on March 28, 2008
  • This is a self-catering paradise. How would you like a thatched cottage lighted only by paraffin lanterns on the side of a mountain overseeing nothing but nature? Quiet serenity. Your cottage comes with an outdoor covered cooking area. It is supplied with gas burners, sink, cutting/draining board, table and chairs. Your cottage has comfortable beds, hot water and full bathroom, but no electricity. You do have plenty of paraffin lanterns. You also have your own site and the only sounds you hear are the crickets. Bring your own wood and food, but you can pick that up in the village. This is a great place to take a relaxing break (not far) away from Gaborone. Unfortunately the owner dies 3 weeks before I was here, but the staff still carry on. You can also go horse riding over a vast area by day. At night the 2 dogs will come and keep guard. They only charged me a little bit of steak!

Please note: some guidebooks name this idyllic place ‘Country Horse Safaris’. The sign actually says ‘Arne’s Horse Safari'.
