HÔTEL DAR – TLIDJENE: REASONABLE, NOTHING EXCITING - ALGERIA

by DAO

Even though I stayed here, it would have been my second choice in Ain Taya, on the outskirts of Algiers. It’s ok. I cannot fault the location, cleanliness, comfort or service. Even after a negotiated rate, it was still a little pricey. Its right in the middle of Ain Taya in term of the main shopping/market area and the large beaches. A reasonable walk to both. And understanding of French would be highly recommended if you want to telephone them, but you can make reservations on their website in English. The only fault I had with them is that they put me in a doubled bedded room, and then tried to charge me for the higher rate when I checked out. They tried to indicate that I had 2 beds – luckily I made sure I never disturbed the other bed. I also pulled out my email correspondence and the correct rate was swiftly delivered to me.

I paid 3800 Dinars ($50) per night. So what do you get?

I was collected from the Airport for 1000 Dinars ($13) by the nice man who drives their hotel van. I was greeted warmly and shown around my room. Beds were ok – not great, but reasonable. The air-conditioning worked great, my fridge was quite large (and cold!), plenty of closet space and a reasonable bathroom. The shower was fine, the tub a bit small and awkward – a typical bath in Algeria for some reason. Toiletries were provided. Even though there was an ashtray, the room did not smell of smoke.

The hotel itself is quiet and somewhat basic. Breakfast is included and you get a boiled egg, a croissant, cheese and a few other bits with coffee or tea. They didn’t seem to mind giving me breakfast at about 11am.

There are several good local stores within a 1 minute walk and also fast food. For a full restaurant you are looking at a 10-15 minute walk.

The local folks are awesome. If you say hello and visit the same shop the process drop slightly. There is absolutely no hassle although some people will stop you just to say hello and welcome you to Ain Taya.

LONG STREET LODGE NC - Kimberley, South Africa: BASIC BED & PARKING WITH SHOPPING

by DAO

I found this place after driving around Kimberly looking at beautiful places I could not afford. Then I saw this place. It was beautiful because I could afford it. And it had parking for my car. For less than $30 (up to 3 adults) you get a clean basic room with air-conditioning, a cold fridge, TV, reasonable bathroom and security. You also get a good night's sleep. My bed (one of 3) was comfortable and the place was quiet.

The location is actually good. It's on a main road. You also are 5 minutes walk or less from a large grocery store, loads of fast food, other small shops and my 2 favorites. A Biltong shop and a liquor store.

Located on the N8, there are plenty of places to get petrol, drinks, food and get going in the morning.

For the price, it's not a bad deal.

CRESTA PRESIDENT HOTEL - Gaborone, Botswana: DEAD CENTER

by DAO

The outside décor is very 1960’s gothic, but don’t let that put you off. It has been extensively refurbished and was officially re-opened on 09 August 2007. Despite only being built in 1965, it is a designated national landmark. It has 93 state of the art rooms, restaurant, conference facilities and a bar. Its also right in the very middle of Gaborone. Almost everything in the Capital of Botswana is either on the doorstep or a very short walk.

Other facilities include:

• Casino
• Car hire
• Child care
• Complimentary membership at nearby Gym
• Free parking
• Same day laundry service

Rooms have:
• Wi-fi internet connectivity
• Air conditioning
• Satellite television
• Tea/Coffee

For location – you can not do ant better.

TAITU HOTEL, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: THEY THREW ME OUT! AND NO HOT WATER

by DAO

Let’s get this over with quickly. This is the oldest hotel in Addis Ababa. It was commissioned to be built by Empress Taitu in 1898. It had no hot water then, and it still doesn’t! Some of it has not been painted, decorated or repaired since then either. The staff hassle you 24/7 to buy a tour yet they ignore you and literally sit down and watch the TV in the middle of the restaurant. Your pleas to get food or drink are never heard over the TV. When they decide to grace you with their presence they are arrogant as hell. Yes, the only rude people in all of Ethiopia work her in this government owned hell hole. Yes, they are government employees. Now you understand. Make a reservation? Get thrown out just like I did when they had a large party. I booked a week and got one night. So, I paid top money for only cold water and got thrown out? YES.

Please do not stay here on principal! They may throw you out with no notice just like me. And it smells.

Throwing solo guests out if a larger party shows up unexpectedly. Homeless in Addis Ababa!

Hôtel Es Safir - Algiers, Algeria: A ONCE GRAND HOTEL

by DAO

THIS IS NOT A 4 STAR HOTEL.
It once was. Very much so. Built in 1926-30 it was originally named the Hotel Aletti. It was a grand hotel with massive rooms, sweeping balconies looking out over the port and a place used by diplomats and high society. One of its most famous visitors was the American singer, Josephine Baker.

After Independence from France (1962) the President, Ahmed Ben Bella, nationalized this hotel and one other. Like any government run hotels in the world – it deteriorated from there. Today some websites list this as a 4 star hotel, want $150 a night and even list the services starting with ‘Has an elevator’. Locally you could probably get in here at half that price, but why would you?

I visited the bar, restaurant, lobby and even the toilets. I quickly envisioned the ghastly descriptions of the rooms you can read on many websites. It’s a real shame, Many guests comment on how grand the rooms were. Unfortunately you cannot turn back 40 years of neglect overnight. I hope they do finish what renovations have started. The hotel is in an excellent location with access to everything the center of the city can provide.

You could always stop by fro a drink in the massive (but empty) smoky bar.

Interestingly they offer non-smoking rooms. Hard to find in Algeria.

They have no direct email address that I could find.

If you really want to pay money to stay in a very run down old hotel in Algiers, there are several to choose from. And they are all cheaper.

PAKACHI BEACH HOTEL: ON THE ROCKS - ZANZIBAR

by DAO

Pakachi means border in local Jambiani / Paje dialect. This is the first location you come to when you arrive in Jambiani. It is owned by Mr. Saleh Hamza and has friendly staff. The bar and restaurant are built on a large coral rock and has a fantastic view of the beach and the Indian Ocean. You can drink and eat and really enjoy the natural beauty of Jambiani.

The beach really starts here and extends for 3 miles to the south.

The restaurant offers a wide range of freshly made food and everything on the menu is available, even during the rainy season. It is an excellent place to eat in the evening. The food is fresh, delicious and well priced. The bar is well stocked and the beer is served ice cold. Even if you do not stay here, have at least one meal here. It is a great experience.

The hotel rooms are in gardens on the opposite side of the road.

Excursions and transfers can be arranged by the hotel.

*** OPEN DURING THE RAINY SEASON ***

Opening hours: Restaurant - 07:30 to 22:00, Bar - 24 hours a day!

KIMTE BEACH INN: TREE HOUSE ROOM AND BEACH BAR (Zanzibar)

by DAO

Kimte is an interesting and small hotel. It actually has 2 parts on either side of the road. On the beach is a really relaxing bar with fantastic vies of the ocean. Also, next to it is a room that is actually like a tree house. Their website shows pictures of this whilst it was being built. My photo shows the completed article.

The staff are friendly and they have another bar and restaurant just across the road.

They have 7 rooms with hot showers for $45. Dorm room accommodation is $10 with breakfast and doubles (sharing) at $20.

Unique Qualities: They also have a small outdoor gift shop. Even if you are not staying here, stop in for a cold beer on the beach.

*** OPEN DURING THE RAINY SEASON ***

FOGERA HOTEL: HISTORICAL NIGHTS

by DAO

This is my favourite Hotel in Ethiopia. When I arrived at the entrance I was greeted by fantastic bunches of flowers overgrowing the front gate, the gateman saluting my arrival (pictured) and a warm welcome into the large garden that is effectively their lobby. They took me to my room and explained that the table outside my nice cottage was also my table for dinner. Right in the middle of a garden overlooking flowers, birds and a small lake. Get in there! My bed was comfy, food excellent, the friendly waiter brought me dinner from the kitchen just opposite my door and I enjoyed the sunset from my chair outside my room on my own porch.

Please note: I stayed here a few years ago. Many visitors report that the hotel has let the place slip a bit. If so, haggle the price down.

Everything is special about the Fogera. It only has 11 rooms so book in advance by telephone! The staff are great, the kitchen ladies are friendly and produce great food at low prices and you get a picturesque room at a very affordable price. Even if you do not stay here, you can eat in the centre of the Garden. You must visit as well in the daylight to see the beautiful grounds.

Facilities:
• Bar with satellite TV
• Good large bathrooms
• Good clothes storage space
• Excellent security
• Tranquil and quiet setting
• Food and drink brought to your door/table at no extra cost
• Large rooms
• Comfortable beds

A great experience. I visited during the Low Season. Telephone and book ahead!

THEIVING BASTARDS: LAL HOTEL, LALIBELA, ETHIOPIA

by DAO

PLEASE DO NOT STAY HERE! THEY RIPPED ME OFF. I arrived at the Lalibela Airport and there were desks for every single hotel in the baggage claim hall. I was staying at the Seven Olives Hotel ad there was only one person in the baggage hall. He told me that he was the transport for the Seven Olives, which provides free transfers to the airport. Great! Off we went down the road and I was dropped off at the Seven Olives. Then asked for 10 Birr more than it would have been for a taxi. An argument ensued in the lobby of the Seven Olives and I had to pay. This is what the LAL HOTEL does. They lie in wait at the airport and scam money from other Hotel guests.

The Seven Olives told me that if I had just asked the airport staff to telephone them they would have picked me up – for free!

Tip Photo
SEVEN OLIVES HOTEL: TOP OF THE HILL (Ethiopia)

by DAO

The Seven Olives is THE hotel at the top of Lalibela – home to the rock churches of Ethiopia. Lalibela is one big steep hill starting its decline right at the gates of this nice hotel. They are well situated to both the main entrance to the rock churches, the Ethiopian Airlines office, restaurants, bars and shops. Rooms are clean and comfortable and the staff are friendly. The best part is the restaurant with its huge panoramic terrace. It is a great place to eat and drink beer and watch the sun set at night. The hotel is set in a well maintained garden, has very good food, cold beer and an indoor restaurant for when it rains. It also has secure car parking.

The hotel has a small gift shop, internet and can arrange anything from a rental car to tours of the area.

Overall the hotel is run down, but reasonable. It was once the premier (possibly only) hotel in Lalibela.

If you do stay in a more modern hotel, at least enjoy a nice meal or beer on the terrace and watch the sunsets.
