More about Sun n' Sand Beach Hotel

Mombasa - Kenya

by beccyandjohn about Sun N' Sand Beach Resort

We had a wonderful 2 weeks at the Sun N' Sand resort our rooms were kept clean and tidy every day. The food was excellent (although i did look forward to going home for some proper english food). The hotel has a perfect position right on the beach and the five or so pools are brilliant including the swim up bar and sunken sunbeds.

The best hotel i've stayed in

by travelmadamy about Sun n sand Beach resort

Upon our arrival at Mombasa airport at 6:30am we got off the plane and proceeded to the visa queue. Please please please if you are travelling to Kenya get your visa before you go. It is so easy to get and it is really frustrating when you have got yours in advance but have to wait for an hour at the airport whilst people get theirs there. We got on the coach for the 1 hour transfer to Sun n sand and saw a completely different world, the poverty is heartbreaking. The roads are interesting to say the least! The drive to the hotel takes you through the industrial suburbs of Mombasa, the rich district with a golf course and waterpark under construction and then on through the countryside and satellite villages where people are living in mud houses and buildings made out of whatever they can get their hands on.
Upon arrival at the hotel which is set 5 mins drive off the main road down a dirt road we were greeted by some traditional dancers, a cold towel and a cocktail. We then had some breakfast in the buffet restaurant before collecting our room keys and being shown to our room. We were originally on the right hand side of the hotel on the 2nd floor. Our room was spotlessly clean with a huge bathroom with a very large (2 person?!) bath with a very good shower, a toilet and a bidet. We had a double and a single bed in the room which we promptly pushed together to make one giant bed! The facilities were excellent in the rooms we had a very good air conditioning system, a television, several telephones (including one in the loo?!) and a huge wardobe with built in safe. We also had a small balcony with 2 comfy chairs which was quite nice to sit out on. When we got back from safari we were in a room on the left hand side of the hotel on the ground floor with a similar sea view to that of the first room and exactly the same layout and facilities. We mainly ate in the buffet restaurant for the first few days but you can book the speciality restaurants which are chinese, BBQ, Italian and A la carte (Charge applies) the day before you want to eat in them. The food in the main restaurant was very varied and plentiful.
Local drinks are all included as are a good selection of cocktails and spirits and some nice wine. There is no need to pay for your drinks when there was such a good selection on offer! In fact the only money we spent in the hotel was on tipping the bar man Steve who was fantastic. He woul always put 2 drinks up each when we sat down and your glass was never empty!
Activities: The hotel has a wealth of activities which are included on the all incsuve basis. There are 2 freshwater pools and 1 saltwater pool. One of the freshwater pools has a couple of slides in it which are quite a good laugh! The slide pool also has a swim up bar and sunken sunbeds which are lovely.
All the pools were clean and quite cold which was very welcome in the humidity! We also took advantage of the pitch and putt golf, crazy gold, table tennis, gym, pool tables, tennis and football. The animation team were very hard working and organised all sorts of activities Toward the end of the holiday we tried out the Italian restaurant and had duck ravioli, soup and some lovely Italian cake. We also tried the chinese and had various rice dishes and spring rolls. On our second from last night we had a lovely dinner in the a la carte restaurant which consisted of Lobster bisque soup, grilled lobster(huge and delicious!) and cake and coffe. This cost us 3000 shillings each but included a whole bottle of cava per person!!!!!!

All in all we had the most fantastic time at Sun n sand, I would rate it at a 4 star hotel. The beach is not great but they don't claim that it is, please don't be scared of the beach boys, get friendly with one and the rest will leave you alone. If you are off to sun n sand you will have a great time. I would go back tommorrow and hope to visit Kenya again.

Pool Bar

by beccyandjohn about Sun N Sand

All the swimming pools were excellent, and you didnt need to get out of the pool for a drink they had sunken seats around the bar and sunken sunbeds.

In the background of this picture they are doing water aerobics.

Swimming Pools

by beccyandjohn about Sun N Sand

Our room looked out onto this pool, theres 2 slides which take you down to the main pool where the sunken sunbeds are (pic 2).

There is also another deeper pool where you can have a go at scuba diving and a further 2 pools near the main restaurant/bar. Great Pools

Best Hotel

by pinkmarch08 about Sun N Sand Beach Hotel

This hotel is brilliant and the staff are wonderful. Food and service brilliant and grounds great. Pools are lovely and the drinks and bars are excellent. My daughter got married here and it was beautiful. We had beautiful flowers from the gardens around the door of our room and a group of wonderful little singers and dancers accompanying us all the way around the grounds. It was brilliant. Beautiful grounds and views of the Indian Ocean. Well kept and I would reccommend it to anyone.

Fabulous Holiday!

by A TripAdvisor Member

We have just returned from the most fantastic holiday at Sun N Sand Beach Resort, Kikambala, Mombasa. The hotel is rated as a 4 star and easily exceeds this! The staff are unbelievably friendly and helpful (especially Muse the Security Guard and Bernie the Pool Man!). The hotel fronts a lovely beach with a reef that extends about 1 mile from the shore. The beach boys are really helpful - they will hassle you initially but if you befriend them they are great! We spend most of the week being escorted by Frank and Alex (beach boys) and they looked after us very well - considering we are two enlglish girls, they showed us the utmost respect and made us feel safe and comfortable even in the middle of the local villages! To the extent that we met them in the evenings and enjoyed the 'Kenyan' lifestyle as opposed to the 'same old same old' karaoke and crooning entertainers at the hotel (it was just not our cup of tea!). If you visit the Sun N Sand, be sure to ask for Frank and Alex - they are local boys and really do need tourism to live, they have nothing, live in mud huts but gave us security, safety and respect!
The reef walk, beach walks, local village tour are all a must. Make sure you take T shirts, shoes, pens, sweets, calculators, books for the local children as they are in desperate need of all these things and if you have any sapre money at the end of your holiday, give it to the locals. The hotel is very grand 'disney' style and it is humbling to be welcomed into one of the locals homes (just outside of the main gates), it almost makes you feel guilty that you are on a fabulous all inclusive holiday, eating and drinking what you want, when you want.

Great Holiday - we will return to the Sun N Sand and will help the locals as much as we are able! Don't forget Frank and Alex (ask for them on the beach) and hopefully they will make your holiday a great experience too!

super holiday

ignore any bad reports about sun n sand,we had a fantastic time its not 5 star but you wont find anything to moan about.
the food is first class as is the service, apart from still waiting for a drink that i ordered the first week(ha ha).
we booked our safari online with DM TOURS and saved a lot of money,we had a toyota landcruiser which was the best vehicle in the park, our driver dennis the menace could spot animals that we could not even see when we were stationary.
back at the hotel the bedding and towels are changed every day,the staff are all great, the night time entertainment was quite good.
there is a school for poor kids and orphans about three hundred yards up the beach on the right hand side,if you take sweets, pencils etc the kids sing and do acrobatics for you (a real tear jerker).
we will be back

fabulous hotel

We have just arrived back after spending 2 weeks at sun n sand. The hotel is excellent. The rooms are spacious and clean, with a fridge, safe, coffee/tea making facilities and bottled water supplied daily. The food is great and tables are arranged outside in the evening. The staff work so hard and were so friendly, they can't do enough for you and there is no pressure to tip, although they deserved them. I arranged a special meal and table on the beach on Valentines day and everything was perfect. Activities are held during the day and everyone is encouraged to join in. The boys working on the beach are harmless and are just trying to earn a living. we got friendly with a group:Phillip, Mr Brown and Marlon. They are great lads. We went on safari with them which was fantastic, and also down to the reef where we were shown all the sea creatures.
We were persuaded to take a fishing trip wih the water sports centre instead of the beach boys. They claimed to have a fish finder on the boat, whereas the boys didn't. This was more expensive and the boat did not have a fish finder. We didn't catch anything bigger than a trout. Go with the beach boys!!! I recommend taking trips outside of the resort as you get to see the real Kenya. The school visit is excellent and remember to take stationary and the children love sweets. Also, the people in the villages are grateful of any old clothes or trainers and shampoo and toiletries.
Overall, the holiday was fantasic, the hotel was exellent and we will definately return.

Oktober should be fine for Kenya. Was there twice at that time of year (have a look at my pages, too :-). Rain occurs, but it is mostly short.
Hot air balloon rides are great, but you will have to have the weather for that (fair, no wind etc.) so maybe make sure that if you canĀ“t do it on the date you wanted, that you have time to postpone it.
And Safari is maybe the best you can do in Kenya anyway.
Have a great time - I am sure you will
