New Wananchi Day and Night Club: Budget accommodation %c

Real budget accommodation in the centre of town. The Wananchi may not be the quietest place to stay in town as the rooms are directly above the night club but you will have a difficulty in finding a cheaper room in the whole of Malindi.

Room prices were 300, 350, and 400 all of the rooms were on the shared bathroom basis. One of the doubles I saw was fairly big and even had a sofa in the room as well as two beds. The security is excellent and the place was clean enough. There was no fan but because you are quite high up there is reasonable breeze.

New Gillani Hotel: Nice Gaff

This hotel is in a great position just up from the main beach in Malindi. First time I came to Malindi I stayed here when it was the Gillani Hotel in 1990 and after many years it had a brief spell as the Gossip Hotel but now is back in the hands of the matriarchal Mama Gillani. Most of the best rooms are on the 2nd floor at the front with balconies and any number of enormous beds.

Prices can vary depending on things such as whether breakfast is included but have a word with Mama she is more flexible than she may first appear.

Its worth staying here just to sleep in the enormous swahili beds, or possibly for the great views across the bay from your balcony.

Scorpio villas: the largest bed in kenya

We ended up staying at the Scorpio villas because it was part of the package - and we quite enjoyed it: it has a large tropical garden and some interesting wooden sculptures in the garden. There are also three salt-water swimming-pools. The sea is only about 200 metres away.

What's really unique is the canopy bed: huge! It was like three beds in one - with a mosquito-net and furniture in traditional Lamu style. The other amazing thing was the private veranda, with a soft sofa and table, and a larger breakfast table with chairs
